What a great channel you have here! In all my TH-cam searching and watching succulent cultivation, I'm surprized I missed or overlooked you. Now I look forward to learning while watching your videos. From friends and aquaintanances I've known, and from what they tell me about their failures growing succulents, I've figured out (and by my own experiences with succulents) that one of the biggest mistakes people make is OVERWATERING. I have to mark my wall calendar when I've watered and/or fertilized. This makes it easy. 😉🌵

Thank you so much 💚 I'm a tiny channel, not many followers so i don't really get promoted by youtube...
Yes, overwatering can certainly be a problem with succulents. Many fungal diseases are particularly drawn to these plants.
Marking the calendar is a great idea to keep track🙂🌵

Thank you great video. I am giving succulents another go after I managed to kill a lot of them a few years ago.

Funny, I just found some cuttings of crassula ovata var minor and a few Haworthias in our storage-room while I was cleaning it up. They are still alive, and they have not been watered for at least 15 month. Ok, they were indoors, cuttings and the room gets cold during winter, but still... When a succulent goes dormant, it can survive for soo long, I would have to try out how long these crassula-cuttings can last. IMHO if it comes to questions about substrate, fertilizer and watering, I usually ask back "well, how do you want it to look?".

Those are some tough cuttings 😃 It never ceases to amaze just how tough they can be and the incredible survival techniques some have developed. I often find bits that have fallen off growing like epiphytes- they just attach themselves with roots to anything (brick, shadecloth, wood) and grow. They don't look all that nice but they're alive. 'How well do you want them look?' is a great question & can be applied to so many succulent care inquiries 😀👍

Do u water at night during summers when temperatures are in 40s. Since last 3,4 years we get very hot summers and initially i tried not watering them as the advice was to water onky when temperatures are below 25degrees. But its dsnt go low even at night so I generally water by 8 pm on a windy day. I ensure that the soil is completely drenched and wl come back and water again to ensure the soil cools down. I have to water twice a week or even alternate days.

Ok, this may sound counter-intuitive & against all other advice out there but when we're in mid 40's for days on end i'd water every other morning before the heat kicks in & sometimes during the day to cool them down. The water evaporates really fast but it seems to help them get through. This old nursery owner also once told me that watering during the day is better as fungal diseases have little chance to develop due to faster evaporation. I'm going to make a video on this in a couple of months when we start getting the 40s again to explain it better :)

Can you recommend a good fertilizer? My friend uses dry chicken droppings mixed in the potting mix. I can't stand the smell so any other organic options

hmm, this is a bit of a difficult one to answer.. If in pots (especially smaller pots) succulents prefer a formulated, slow release fertilizer with low nitrogen (npp 8-8-8 or 10-10-10) which is not strictly organic and comes in a form of little balls. This is what i use for all the nursery plants. In the garden you can get away with manure or compost but it is important that it's well composted (not smell of ammonia etc) and used sparingly. The tougher succulent varieties will tolerate and even thrive on compost in the garden but some can have their leaves split if too much nitrogen is present. TBH, succulents will tolerate a lot and will grow even if you use the wrong fertilizer, they may just not look as nice.. I have a video on fertilizing succulents if you want to have a look
