Are hybrid succulents hardier than species naturally growing in the wild?

There is only so many species within each genus of different succulent plants but many hybrids have been created, mostly by humans, by crossbreeding. Some of these hybrids can be hardier than their parents but others are not. Hybridizing is a big business and often plants are crossed in order to create a specific look. It is not unusual that hardiness of these new succulents is pushed aside in ...

    Question! I waited until the leaves were soft before watering, but it dropped a lot of leaves. So I have watered it even less, though the leaves are soft and thinner than they were when I purchased. It’s outside in the heat with ~5 hours of morning sun. With other succulents, I water when the leaves become soft or wrinkly. This plant seems to drop leaves when I water so I’m not sure what it needs?!

    • @SucculentGrowingTips
      @SucculentGrowingTips วันที่ผ่านมา

      Ok, so this is a bit of a prickly topic as my advice contradicts the popular opinion (please bear in mind that the following is my personal opinion)😅- i'm aware that a lot of people advise to wait until leaves wrinkle but, in my experience, it can lead to some succulents (not all though) dropping leaves. It's kind of a stress response to being a bit too dry and can be made worse at certain times of the year, especially when also hot. Personally, i water mine when the potting mix dries up and tend not to wait for leaves to go wrinkly. I have a video that talks about this in a bit more detail (below). Hope this helps 🙂 th-cam.com/video/DnXQhwCGVcI/w-d-xo.htmlsi=v2IjW-FVyqVLjIb5

      So glad the video was useful 🙂 I usually water well so everything gets wet and then wait until the potting mix completely dries out before watering again. Though, if repotting a plant that has wet roots or the new potting mix is wet, i'd wait with the watering until it all dries up.

    • @SucculentGrowingTips
      @SucculentGrowingTips 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Oh no, sorry to hear that🥺. It can be a few things and it's a bit difficult to guess without knowing more about where you are, where the plant is kept etc. so i'll just list possible causes. The white bear's paw is not very tolerant of overwatering but watering them once should not have caused that response. It's usually repeated watering often that will make it lose a lot of leaves. Having it indoors in insufficient light can easily cause them to start dropping leaves. These guys like bright light but not a lot of strong sun, though, often indoors is not bright enough even if you get some sunlight. If you have a covered patio or shaded spot outdoors, i'd pop it there but be mindful of the rain. You can also get it plant growing lights if you want to have it inside. Lastly, the plant could have just gotten a bit of a shock from being transported and arriving in a completely different environment. The white paws are quite sensitive little buggers. I really hope it pulls itself together and starts growing soon 💚🤞

      @@SucculentGrowingTips Thanks for the tips. I love watching your videos, I live in MD, USA and the paws were shipped from CA. I think I must have watered them too much cause they were still kind of wet when I potted. I think I should have waited for them to be drier before potting. But today I think whatever’s left will survive. They are a little drier today and I’m not going to water them until they are really thirsty. I hope they get fat leaves cause I really like them. They are so cute those paws especially with those red tips. I getting ready to watch the link for leaf propagation you mentioned in one of your videos since I have so many leaves. I hope they will propagate.

    How do you treat an inground garden. They ruined all my plants. Devils

    • @SucculentGrowingTips
      @SucculentGrowingTips 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      You can get tablets that dissolve into soil with watering. The plants then absorb them through the roots and have the active ingredients inside. When the mealybugs feed off the roots, they'll ingest the poison and, hopefully die.. Like any mealybug treatment, it is not 100% effective but should help enough. There's also granules etc, you can sprinkle on top of the soil but they will kill a lot of good bugs in the soil as well. Hope this helps 🙂

    What is the difference between getting a patent on a plant vs creating your own hybrid (in which you can name the plant) vs creating a cultivar?

    • @SucculentGrowingTips
      @SucculentGrowingTips 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Every human made hybrid is also a cultivar (cultivated variety). If you manage to create your own and want to officially name it you'll have to make sure it's true to type and there are rules you need to adhere to (national and international) if you want it to be recognised as a new cultivar. You can also choose to patent it and have exclusive breeding rights. The process will be different based on where in the world you are- you'll have to find out what the rules are in your particular country. Hope this helps :) I also just made a video on the different terminology used around plant names which explain the difference between cultivar, hybrid etc. th-cam.com/video/05qkedU2n04/w-d-xo.htmlsi=ALmsfa_hg12OQ7Mv

Im in the U.K. and temperatures rarely went above 20C since I’ve gotten the leaf couple of months ago. A little florette has formed now, which is very exciting! On the other side, towards the soil is some sort of a ball, but no roots yet. Your leaves seem to have formed roots first then florettes. This is all very exciting! Do you think I might get lucky and actually grow a baby Schwarzkopf?

      Ooo, that is so exciting!! Well done! I think you may have a good chance of getting a baby Schwarzkopf in the UK thanks to your cooler temperatures. If it's not too much bother, pls keep us updated 😀

    Thanks. This is very helpful for me to understand why some of my plants don't do as well as others.

    Thank you for the caring of this beautiful succulent. Now I know why my Cotyledon doesn,t flower..need sun. I have of them in the garden shed for 3 years, and no flowers,not enough sun, .
