Playing his Dire Straits classic, Mark Knopfler brings Romeo and Juliet to Ken Bruce's show in the Radio 2 Piano Room.
Mark: "I can't do a love song, the way it's meant to be"
Also Mark: Writes the greatest love song in the history of music

Seeing him perform this as an older man lends the song a real bittersweet, retrospective quality. I love it.
Great song great words, but sounds like a effort to drum up enthusiasm to sing it
I saw this performed live last September. It is this and more to see him perform it.

seriously, one of the greatest songs ever written
Agreed, brother.
Agreed
In the entire story of rock music
His most perfect masterpiece
I disagree
The song lends itself completely to the fragility of his aging voice, it shows how timeless the narrative is and the line "ill love you till i die" . That comes one day for all of us.
IMO the best rock ballad ever written!!...
i am immortal
This song is both hauntingly beautiful and heartbreaking...in a way that saddens me to be thinking that my life, at 67, is mostly behind me now...and that I missed out on my Juliet. I still think of her, 50 years later, and the kiss we never shared.
Man, that's sad.
Bless you. It is a confronting piece, easy to cry.
I was married in High School. Not because of Preg. Anyway. We made it 27 years. When she left me; 15 yrs. ago; I NEVER heard from her again. In any way. This song makes me cry even today.
Consider yourself lucky.
Be grateful for health, sanity.
believe my friend, Juliet is just around the corner :-)
This is like getting that special bottle of brandy out on a winters evening infront of a crackling fire. The moment sinks in and you just know everything is alright. Beautiful
This is one of the most beautiful comment I've ever read on YT...
Hugs from Italy!😊👋
Sounds Great 🥃
hell yeah thats a beautiful comment couldnt think of anything better amen love and peace to all xx
No autotune, no click tracks, no editing...................Just a legend and artist, a guitar, a piano and a shaker.
Mark's voice is aging perfectly, and this song brings a whole new meaning as we all age..........it's bittersweet.
Beautifully said chum - wish I had the elequoence of yourself. I think this is one of the most perfect songs ever. This acoustic rendition taking it to a whole different level of poignancy. So pure it hurts

Perfection
@@serenityinside1 That was very well said. I am sorry that you are missing your Sandra.
How many times has he sung this song? And yet here, with just Mark, a guitar and minimal backup, and he can touch people to the core. Brilliant!
i have seen written somewere that he has played It more than 3000 times. It Is One of his favs.
Yes, it’s such a beautiful piece. And the raspy tones of a more senior musician (no offence, Mark - you still rock!) add to the melancholy. I listen to this often because it soothes.
And each time played slightly different .
He's never been the fastest guitarist out there but there's nobody, absolutely nobody who can play with so much feel. Not even Dave Gilmour.
Mark Knopfler is not only a great musician, but also an outstanding poet. Who is not crying listening to this emotional song?
This version actually made me super said. Mark's older voice actually makes it sound like an older person, telling the story of long lost lovers. Makes a stronger impact than the original recording when all the band was younger.
Fact I just felt that when I’ve watched it for the first time just now :(
So true ❤😢
My god yes... this song has never made me cry before... until now
Time goes by to fast
I found my true Romeo when I was 25, but he was already taken. After 5 devastating years we realized and accepted one can't built your happiness on someone else's heartbreak. So we went our seperate routes. I'll be 63 this year, after almost 40 years I still remember and cherish our every ❤ moment spend together❤ ❤

The whole Making Movies album is beyond brilliant. Personally I would rank it top 5 all time, and this song rates as the best of the album.
Apart from the other 250+ gems he's also writen
Music Masterpiece
No the best song

Saw Knopfler in Belfast years ago....the stage fell into darkness, he was sitting with a steel guitar on his lap and a spot light from the back was shinning on him....he reflected the beam around the theater and audience... The place was in silence and then he struck up with the start of Romeo and Juliet.!!!! The place fucking erupted......
A fantastic night with a fantastic guy............
teamfab love this. My dad introduced me to his music a few years ago. I hope to take myself and my dad to see him very soon! ❤️
Went to see him in August in TO. Best night of my life, he played this song and the same thing happened before.
Team fab hope you see this same here early 80's in opposite end of the country in the City Hall in Cork. Pure magic.
teamfab wish I could’ve have been there. Sounds amazing!!
teamfab I seen him too and I though he was poor. I love his songs but he seemed very disinterested to have been there. Though I love his songs. And would still go to see him again. Maybe he just had an off night.
Can't get enough. Marc touches me with his guitar all day long.
After almost 40 years, still wonderful
It's such a classic! Out of this world!

Incredible song sang beautifuly by mark knofler 🤗 xx
The best part of this particular version to me is that he leaves out the verse where Juliets dreams come true and she leaves Romeo. In that verse she falls for chains of silver and she falls for chains of gold... and pretty strangers with the promised they told. Leaving this verse out seems to make the song more poignant and reflective... an old man remembering his life, keeping the good and forgetting the bad... really amazing stuff...
Good point, well spotted.
Very good point. This version is perfect for a man looking back.
Definitely, almost like Hurt by jonny cash
genius blake 👌❤
It’s 40years after. So maybe he’s made peace with it .
The best thing about Mark Knopfler is the fact that his voice is so unique , he never stretched it too hard which is why it’s still the same now as it was 30 years ago. True inspiration to me.
He's a technically better singer since he stopped smoking in the late 90's.
Are you serious, still the same now as it was 30 years ago. You need to get down to Specsavers and get your hearing aid checked or at least turn the thing on.
@@certifiedbiker580 No it isn't. His voice in the 90s was pretty shot as he himself has said multiple times. He quit smoking and has been a much more melodic singer since then.
@@ThomasWilliamsMusik you think that's singing, he's actually just saying the words. That's not singing
@@certifiedbiker580 Now you've changed your claim. I'm not saying he's a brilliant singer. I'm saying he's a technically better one than he was, which is true.
Hi, I first listened to this song when I was 10 years old, I was pretending I was a ballerina dancing about the lounge area in the children’s home at the time. This was my first musical experience. We were never encouraged to listen to music,or anything else for that matter, we were the unwanted children of an era where if you were conceived out of wedlock you were taken away from your parents, adopted,if you were lucky. But for me, a sentence from hell within an institution ( children’s home). This song that I happened to hear on the radio, just once , was my saviour in believing that there was something beautiful, creative, something more than the misery I experienced at that particular time going on in the world outside, from then on, I promised myself that I would sing, play, write, to all of the other children and give them a sense of comfort. Iam a Nurse now, I still sing to patients and still see the profound effects that music can bring to people of all ages and backgrounds. Thanks Mark.🙏
Love you. God bless you.
Wow that's genuinely sad and amazingly positive at the same time
Keep smiling keep shining.
Wow , when you realise even more than ever that your own childhood was great

Yep, but we say that about other tunes too!

Everything he writes is quality. Such an amazing way with words.
While this is lovely, along with "Your latest trick", I'd argue that "Tunnel of Love" is the greatest song ever written.

Possibly the greatest love song ever written and composed and played by a rock n roll artist
This is incredible. It sounds even more poetic now that he’s singing it in his later years. Nearly brought me to tears.
We'll never have another Knopfler.

Pretty much, but not all. I can still appreciate the song and musicianship though.
Mark exploded in my heart with the Sultans of Swing; a fire burns there gently ever since. A good man; the best of the best.
This song makes me cry. So many reasons why. Mark, you are the best.
You'd have to be made of stone not to be touched by this song wouldn't you. 🙂

well deserved award (living legend award at sse scottish music awards this year)
A song that is beautiful and heart breaking sad in one and I love listing to it.
I am 72 and ‘lost’ my Juliet 23 years and 3 months ago------------because I was foolish, thick and did not listen to the right people. I still think and love her to this day.
Living legend. Dire straits were one of the tightest musical outfits in terms of the quality of musicianship and way their music flowed. Flawless.
I think his voice is perfect for this now more than ever. It's a song that should be sung older, looking back at that one love we wanted more than anything in this world to last, but lost.
Women don't love.
That's the tragedy.
Mark Okern i think both work...as someone older looking back at a distant love, and as someone younger...maybe reflections of a recent relationship. Either way, we’re talking about Mark...so it’s perfect

"And all I do is miss you"....how his voice breaks when he sings that line.
This is such a beautiful song, heartfelt.
When it came out, I was making a total mess of my life at 18. I met my Juliet, but couldn't get her to be mine. Yet.
I turned my life around a year later, and we got together.
We have been married for 35 years now, and this song just brings me to tears. So beautiful. So thankful.

When you have pure talent you don't need to shout to reach the soul
Well said.
That's dumb as fuck. So james brown wasnt talented? Foh
@@wilfordgrimley4339 You don't NEED to shout. And let's face it, most of James Brown was more like performance art...
Shout to reach the soul is an expression in itself, like an extra thing. But this does not make shouting a bad thing. You guys are a bit not so having a clue lol :) and I do get your feel and what you meant and that is what matters. OR what does not not matter (2x not) since it only appears as if it was the case that it wouldn't matter, by what I said which is though not even true.
Brilliant ,,, you nailed it.
This is possibly the most magical, heart wrenching and beautiful song ever made. Thank you Mr. Knopfler, you sir, are eternal.
It was just that the time was wrong. Another level of stunning. Song writing at its absolute best.
Oh my God... the perfection...
For some weird reason (I wasn't listening to any music at the time) last night I was thinking about how outstanding Mr Knopfler's work is. What's amazing is that if you ignore the fact that the music is sensational and how well he plays, and then just look at the lyrics - he really puts together some sweet lines and tells amazing stories. Songs like this and Telegraph Road for example, do not need videos - it's like reading a good book, the lyrics and music help your imagination create the scenes in your head. Rock on MK, looking forward to the new album!
Can't say more. Listening to Mark's music is like reading a book.
I've always thought the same. He even does an amazing feat, he creates an atmosphere with his music that's like watching a movie.

My real guitar hero!
One of the greatest live songs of all time
The time is wrong, is such an undeniable truth that we feel about life as we age. As an older man, Mark renders his wonderful song with such regret and tenderness. Beautiful.
Me and my Juliet parted 30 years ago, this was one of "our" songs. I still think of her everyday and hope she's doing well, healthy and happy.
This beautiful song was released when I married my Juliet but I was too immature to realise that I had been awarded top prize. I was too selfish and didn’t give her sufficient attention. We separated seven years later with absolutely no animosity whatsoever. As she said to me on the times that we sat and conversed before she actually left, the Carpenters’ song “I’m caught between goodbye and I love you” summed up just how she felt about the sad situation as she was struggling with the decision of whether to leave. I know beyond doubt that I am now exactly the person that I wasn’t then; the person that she wanted me to be but I was too selfish to realise. I often feel like saying to her “when you gonna realise it was just that the time was wrong”. Too late now.
@johnmanning5568 sounds much like my story too, sadly we have to lose our Juliets to learn this.
@@Eddiecurrent2000 exactly. Like yourself though I still think about my Juliet every day and what could….should…. have been.
