    About 20 years ago I worked on a prototype yard switching locomotive that was powered by a 600 volt battery bank. It was like driving a 1500HP golf cart lol. This unit had a small diesel generator under the hood to charge the batteries when needed. I think it was a 25kw 3 phase unit. The reduction in fuel use and emissions were incredible!! With battery technology coming along so far it won’t be long before these are mainstream. But for remote locations, I can see that charging does remain a challenge. Great video!! 😃👍🏻

    • @mikehunt3222
      @mikehunt3222 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      You’re still gonna have to run a generator all night long to charge it unless you want to haul it home every night which wouldn’t be very practical. I can also see problems with that if you’re on a job site with houses around, the people aren’t gonna want to hear a generator running all night unless you can talk to the customer and pay them or give a discount into letting you plug into their house power.
      I just don’t think full electric is the way to “save the planet” when they literally have children and slaves digging for the lithium and other minerals for all these batteries not to mention the nasty pollution from the lithium mines, the cost you have to make up for vs a diesel is a lot, and they still can’t recycle the lithium when it’s past it’s lifespan, it pretty much has to be treated like nuclear waste. Many smarter people than me think that hybrid is the way to go but we have powerful people in our government getting lobbied hard and being paid off to push for all electric. But either way unless they find another RELIABLE alternative to fossil fuels solar and wind ain’t gonna cut it no matter what the idiot politicians in Washington try to shove down our throats with one hand and with the other hand are reaching around and stealing our wallets.

      @Damoinion ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I believe that Volvo are also making solar powered portable charging stations. Coupled with a small generator, that may be the answer for areas off the grid.
      Personally, I would like to see more work done on hydrogen fuel cell systems, possibly powering a hybrid unit.
      Edit: posted this 2 min before Mike mentioned the hydrogen cell haul truck!!!!

    • @danwat1234
      @danwat1234 ปีที่แล้ว

      Local solar won't give much charge to a machine with slightly more battery capacity than a fully loaded Hummer EV. But the reduction in emissions is tremendous if charged by the grid. Some savings if charged with a large modern genset on site charging multiple tractors at once.

    The upper temperature range will need to be raised if Volvo want to sell into the African, Australian, Middle Eastern, and both North and South American markets. 40 C just won't cut the mustard in some areas during the Summer months.
    These markets also will have a problem with supplying power for charging at remote sites.

    They don't call GM General Engines.
    It's General Motors for a reason.
    Fossil fuels power plants can be called both depending on the individuals choice.
    10 years from now I highly doubt diesel power equipment will still ge available.
    In the long run, bottom line electric equipment will be cheaper to operate when you take into consideration maintenance costs, Fossil fuel costs and other factors.
    There's a new battery almost ready for mass production that's way ahead of current batteries.
    They use far less if any rare earth materials which will seriously cut costs of production and will have seriously longer life spans.
    Thanks Mike for taking us along on your trip thru the show.
    I hope we're going to see some excavator competition between you, Matt, Cris, Captain Kleeman, Matt Diesel Creek and Dirt Grain and Steel channel (I forget his name).
    Definitely want to see an episode of you guys at the Volvo test facility.

    Most impressive, they have come a long way with battery powered machines, it would be interesting to see what the E230 machine would do in the dirt. As far as the motor/engine deal goes its like calling soil dirt or soil/dirt, either way you choose to call it, the end result is it able to move “STUFF” from point A to point B efficiently with minimum cost. Thanks for the for the walk around Mike.

      It seems they have made more advancements than the standard automotive sector. Tesla has yet to design a battery pack that would allow you to drive a week with all electronics on. But, that will never happen because they want to force people to charge VERY OFTEN so the electric companies and the corrupt politicians can fatten their bank accounts.

    There's definitely a market for this. Plumbers or utility contractors doing major groundwork inside existing buildings or sewer and water taps in a densely populated area, pool builders digging 10 feet away from the neighbors house. There are a lot of jobsites, I'd rather have this instead of a diesel machine. Just to avoid the noise complaints. I saw a party rental company with a Merlo eWorker on a trailer the other day. Perfect example of a company that needs an electric machine, and may prefer it over diesel.

    5:45 Engines are thermodynamic devices that do work using a difference in temperature. Samples are the internal combustion engine, Sterling engine and the steam engine. Motors are energy conversion devices. An electric motor converts electrical energy into mechanical energy used to drive fans, pumps, etc. Other examples are the air motors in air tools converting air pressure into rotational mechanical force used to drive impact wrenches, jack hammers, etc. Hydraulic motors are another example of motors. General Motors should of named themselves General Engines and a GMC truck should of been a GEC truck.

    My first question is purchase cost comparison to diesel driven. Second, what is the mobile charging unit like, suspect a diesel driven generator, there goes some of the environmental friendly and the purchase cost of this charging system? He said the motors are three phase AC. I believe That means there is a DC to AC inverter. Possibly another trouble spot. I believe that as the battery bank voltage gets lower the current draw has to go up to keep the AC motors at correct speed. Unless they have figured out a way to defeat OHMs law. That means the battery drain curve is not linear. Gonna drop off quicker at the end of the charging cycle. I'm always wary of new unproven technology It is very interesting though. Sure would like to see you or Chris put it to the test.

  • @casualobserver3702

    I would think it would be easy to see skid steers and mini excavators in electric, as it would be easier to keep charged when you can trailer them to a charge point, but the big machines present a difficult charge situation for you operators that move around to new job sites. Also I predict you will find much more torque thus power with electric.

    Work for 4-5 hours and charge at 150 KWH for an hour, then work another 4-5 hours, then charge again for the next morning. What are they using to charge this beast? The backup generator where I used to work was a 33 Kwh unit and it had an inline 6 cylinder running on bottled gas. You would need 5 of those to come close to charging this thing. You would need approx 150 square meters of solar panel to achieve that charge rate. Are you going to have a 20 ' shipping container to haul around with charging equipment as well?
    @7:30 2500 charging cycles on the batteries before they need replacement. Two charging cycles per work day, that is 1250 work days. 260 work days per year, unless you work weekends. That is 4 years best case without any battery degradation. I guarantee the replacement cost of the batteries will be close to the purchase price of the excavator.
    I would also be concerned about running a 600 volt system in a pond dredging operation. If it sinks, you might be sunk. How water tight are those connections,?
    I don't see any advantage of electric over diesel powered construction equipment

    I think that would be awesome if they would let you use it on your channel . If you buy one you will need a mobile charging station
    Or see if they have solar mobile charging station.

    If your excavator stays in one place all the time (like a scrapyard) this is fantastic, not so good for you or Chris who constantly move from the middle of nowhere to just past it.
    The one question you didnt ask is how much is it compared to the diesel version? Charging cost vs fuel are easy enough to work out.

      If it works as Lars said (full overnight and partial at lunch) it should be seven to ten years before it starts degrading and not working optimally. That is every day of the year to get to the total charge cycles. Now that is highly variable due to the type of work done. You could get much more if you can skip the mid day boost or less if you push the machine to it's limits everyday. Sometimes you will need to top it overnight after a short day and that will not be as hard on the batteries but still count. Way too many variables to get an exact lifespan. But even after swapping the batteries the old one will have value for another use. Like most automotive batteries, they will likely go on to be utility storage as even 80% efficient will work for many uses.

    For all the challenges with battery technology and charging options for onsite charging, they’ve come a long way. And for all the naysayers, they have to start somewhere. Practical for most applications here? Maybe not, but what will 10 years of advancements look like? Thanks for a great video!
