Interesting car with quite the gizmo roof. I prefer the 58 model styling and dashboard. You may have come across Lucy and Ricky Ricardo demonstrating the retractable top. They did a TV commercial.
The back seat of Skyliner’s was more vertical than the other models due to the top needing the storage space. I read that somewhere and how it bothered some folks.
Ford seats in the 50s are weird even in cars that aren’t the Skyliner but I will admit the Skyliner is worse for rear seat. Space it would be perfect for a kid but a full size adult doesn’t fit back there very well considering the size of the car it’s a bit shocking.
First pick 59 Chevy, second 59 Galaxie sky liner also the best styled one, not big on the square or bullet birds but love the 64-68 Thunderbirds, also take one of the few home built Edsel Skyliners built.
Jay, you sound as if you aren't feeling well. I hope all is ok! Fun fact: 1959 and 1957 were two years where Ford outsold Chevy. When you showed the radio, I was surprised to see the 2 conelrad symbols at 640 and 1240. I somehow thought that they started using those in 62, so I thought that might be a later Ford radio. Turns out that they were used from 53 to 63. WYR= 59 Ford, 57 or 59 Ford, and I'll take the T-bird. Sorry, I don't like the 58 styling. Hope you feel better soon!
I’m better than ever. I’m just in a totally different location recording these. It’s more of an echo chamber here than it is back at the Homestead at the kitchen table. Great insight. It’s a long story. My mom has her own business and she wanted me to come and help her for a weekend in Cleveland. I’ve been in Cleveland since Thursday. I went to Lancaster on Wednesday. It’s been a whirlwind of a week and they go to bed early so I didn’t want to wake them up
My father took us for a ride in a new1957 Skyliner from the dealership where he worked. We were amazed, when he drove by the local park, pulled over and lowered the top.
22:43 On the note of no power assist, If you find a factory or restored original example of a 57-59 Ford you cannot tell if its a power assist setup or a manual brake setup because the Power Assist Booster is actually IN line with the pedal Theres a T check valve that takes vacuum from the manifold and the bottom portion goes to the booster itself and the right side of the T goes to a vacuum tank located behind the fender Its a physical diaphragm that when pedal pressure is applied the vacuum will almost suck the pedal in with the booster giving you a softer easier pedal I have this setup on my 59 Galaxie sedan and can confirm it works incredibly soft when adjusted properly You can see the booster around 17:30 on the far right
My Mom and Dad had a 59 Galaxie 500 when I was 3 or 4 early 60's I remember laying in the back package tray and looking at the stars going down the highway. Plastic seat covers for the year Dad said it was loaded with extras. 352 V8 was in ours Dad's baby sister use to race it .
I always liked the 59 Fords. There was one of these Skyliners in the favorite junkyard of my younger days; the top, trunklid, and seats were gone and a tree was growing through the rusted-out floorpan. I always heard these hydraulic cylinders were troublesome and it was hard to adjust the cables properly for the top. I like the 58 dashboard better. WYR goes to the 59 Chevy (I used to have a 61) and I like the 57 better than the later models. IMHO there were the least attractive 'Birds ever made so I'll go for the Skyliner. The 'dogleg windshields were touted as a safety feature because of the better visibility, but they didn't fare too good in a roll-over. Between that and the knee problem they went away in all cars after several years.
I used to have a 57 ford wagon, and a 58 ford wagon, but I could handle a hardtop convertible. I would choose the 59 in the first and second scenario, and the thunder chicken in the 3 one.
This pristine example is beautiful 🤩 I'd pick this in the first scenario, and honestly I've always liked the '57 and '58 models better than the '59, I'd pick the '58 in the second, and the T-Bird in the third.😎
WYR 1: Fury, definiitely! Just look at that beautiful girl!!! That Ford looks like a turd compared to it. 2: 58 by far!! Never liked the 59! 3: T-bird, duh!!!!!
Led Zeppelin, Fool in the Rain
Yeah buddy you got it =)

Yes I used that scene in the 1957 Skyliner episode

There is a car, train and motorcycle show in Denver Co. that has one diced up so you can see all the relays and switches. Before it’s time
I was told that the top system was bit more simplified, fewer relays and micro switches to cause problems.
🎉🎉🎉 1959 ford🎉🎉
WYR 1 & 2: All of them.
WYR 3: Both.
A hardtop convertible from before hardtop convertibles were cool? SWEET!

@@What.its.like. Whew! Glad you're ok!

Awesome I got to drive a 57 skyliner once with a y-block

Chevy Impala
58 Ford Skyliner
59 ⚡🐓 Thunder chicken 👍
Good looking Ford this Evening 👏👏👏👏
Great Episode
Happy Motoring ✌️😎

The Ford, 1957, then the T-Bird.
Sweet choices
An iconic car
I have to say, I do learn alot from your "let's talk styling " segment, alot of details on these cars escape me unless they are pointed out!
That camera shows things you wouldn't normally see so much detail in the older cars

Not a bad looking car. I think I'll grab the '58 Skyliner.
Sweet choice

Early to mid-fifty's...the era of 300lb bumpers.
WYR, anything except for the 58 Ford. I thought that the styling for that year Ford was just a mess.
Jay there is literally a Citroen DS Safari 18:05 review it.
I will the next time I go if it's there I'll probably go back in a couple of weeks
This was a very expensive Ford. I would have thought that Ford would have mated this feature to the thunderbid
I believe it was originally intended for Lincoln but Lincoln got the breezeway instead
