    PS isn't the flashiest rate, but it translates well if you get your certs (PHR) while you're in. As a PS, you can go Federal HR, which arguably has the most opportunity on the Feds right now, aside from IT. Of course, you could go Admin, but as an HR Specialist you have more promotion opportunity and you generally make more money

    You sure do love paperwork. I was a Quartermaster submarines which no longer exists. I became a Boatswain’s Mate in the merchant marine which is called able seaman. If I had to do it over again my top five rates would be: Aereographer’s Mate [1]; Air Traffic Controller [2]; Culinary Specialist [3]; Ship’s serviceman [4]; Operations Specialist [5]. The cushiest job in the navy, so far as I could tell, was air wing weatherman or Aereographer. For outside employment with the federal government I chose air traffic controller. I chose culinary because in my opinion being chief cook on a merchant vessel is the #1 job in the merchant marine. Then as an ex-QM who hated submarines I’d gravitate to OS since as an AB in the merchant marine I spent lots of time when on watch staring at the collision avoidance radar. Then finally I was a barber for 20 years so I could be ship’s barber on a large vessel without even bothering to wake up for the haircuts, so easy is hair cutting for me.

      I was a PN in the Navy. That rating has changed drastically over the years because you are new required to deal with pay matters which used to be handled by the Disbursing Clerk. They did away with Disbursing Clerks and gave that job to the PN rating. They changed the title of the PN rating to PS{Personnel Specialist}.

    • @JohnFourtyTwo
      @JohnFourtyTwo 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@josephkelleher8820 They merged DK and PN into PS, they didn’t get rid of DK and give that job to PNs. Long before the merger, personnelmen were already creating pay and other personnel documents and handing off to the disbursing clerks to send off the ship. They were also in two different departments to avoid conflict of interest. Now they’re one in the same similar to the way it was before PSDs were created when every shore command had their own disbursing personnel like onboard ships and it wasn’t uncommon for “friends” to get preferential treatment because there was no oversight in place to prevent it.

    Hello. I just want to add to the AZ part. We are not only on carriers . I have deployed on the Reagan ( CVN 76) twice and the Makin Island (LHD 8). Also we are in Squadrons and FRCS.. In a lot of commands there is an AZ for each work center 400-900 divisions. We are the paper work side of aviation. There's actually a lot more to it but I just wanted to expand a little on the AZ part. Great video though.!

The crew always complains about the food because they’re expecting fine restaurant steak and lobster dining not TV dinner type meals. Personally the food wasn’t that bad, I just didn’t like the long lines on a carrier for the main crew mess and speed lines which took most of my chow time in line waiting for the surprise of the day which is why I had most of my meals at the hot dog wagon above Forward Bomb Assembly because the line was very short and you were in and out in a few minutes which gave you about 45 minutes of free time before having to go back to work after lunch and dinner. For breakfast you had to be in line around 04:30 when the line wasn’t long and you could have some time after breakfast before morning muster.

    I took the picat when I told the petty officer I didn't feel ready and he insisted for me to take it I got a 44 and I only qualified for ABF, ABE, ABH, AO, BM, CS, EN, MM, And PR. Was only ok with PR and CS, but I was told to choose rates, but didn't feel comfortable with the other 3 rates, cause they are hard labor jobs and risky at the same time with aviation, so I decided to retake the asvan a month later and unfortunately scored a 30, so I qualified for ABF, ABE, ABH, AO, BM, And PR. I'm only fine with PR, but not the rest. So I decided to take it a third time, but was informed by the recruiter that as per their supervisor I'm not allowed to retest again, cause I scored lower. If I would have scored higher they would allow me to retest, but since I scored lower I'm not allow to retest, it's a new policy. I think I'm banned for three years until they switch management. So my desires of becoming a sailor won't be happening

However if i was you id reach out to a different branch (not to join) to ask them if you could take the picat again you might have to play along with going with another branch then just switch back to navy but find new recruiters. @@rodolfomorenoiii135 yes those are the main subjects, you could still go Navy if you want to but they’d probably tell you it’s best to pick the undes rate because of the 30. Airforce dropped their AFQT test scores to 31 so low score jobs in the airforce is security forces and admin. So it doesn’t hurt to reach out you just gotta gotta study. Klan Academy is great for the math portion. Army’s age limit is 35 so try reaching out to them too. As a YN i can say she's right on some of the things we do. We do Correspondence, Evals, and Awards. We also handle paperwork such as transfer and separation paperwork as the PS's do depending if you are in a smaller command. So really we go hand and hand. We push all paperwork through the command, or department. We work more with the chain of command to route everything before it goes to a PS to get it into your record. If there isn't a PS or a LN in your command and your the YN, you will most likely take on those duties. I would say from my experience, ranking up hasn't been to hard. Work hard, study, and constantly learn. Grow in your leadership skills and also stay connected to your community. There's much you can do to become successful regardless of what rate you are! 1. IT - civilian translation is none really. You'll want to get AWS, cloud, cybersecruity, or some other certificates on the very low end to get hired anywhere in the civilian world for IT. Coding bootcamps (with a good reputation and high post-grad hiring rate) or college are the best ways to make money in IT after leaving the Navy. It's difficult otherwise and chances are slim. However, Google has Apprenticeship Programs for IT-related careers but I forgot the stipulations. I do know you can not have a degree though. I think that's the best bet for anyone Navy IT to civilian with no education.
    2. PS - civilian translation is "Human Resources Manager" or related titles. You may be able to swing something paying well, but no promises. HR Managers/Specialists in corporate typically require a Bachelor's. However, some jobs, especially on the federal side, accept experience as an education substitution and pay well depending on your rank when you get out. However, the government doesn't start paying well until you get to like G-12 and it's way easier to get to G-12 with a degree. YN - civilian translation is "Executive Assistant" or related titles (if you get out and look for Administrative Assistant jobs or present yourself as an AA as opposed to an EA, you're going to miss out on money...so you were an EA). Same deal as PS, but EA's typically require a Bachelor's to Master's and are paid well out of the gate. However, you may be able to obtain an EA role without education if you market yourself well.
    3. LN - civilian translation is "Paralegal," "Legal Analyst," or related titles. I'm being liberal with Legal Analyst, but you may be able to swing it. LNs get Paralegal cert/education, so this is probably best aligned with actually getting a good paying job in the civilian world.
    4. AZ - civilian translation is "Aviation Administrator," "Repairs Administrator" or related titles. I don't know personally about this, because I do not work in an industry where I'd ever come in contact with these folks. Probably the lowest paying unless you transition to Air Traffic Controller or Chief of Staff in some aviation capacity, which you need education for.
    - I'm a former AO, three years separated, Bachelor's Degree in Psychology, current MBA student, and transitioning Legal Analyst (yes, I've done A LOT since being out). So, you can do whatever you want with education...and nearly nothing with only your Naval experience unless you plan on making no money or going to get a license/education/vocation in some field. Civilians prefer formal education and experience over experience. Good luck to everyone!

      I’m an AZ and I would say we deal with record keeping on aircraft logbooks. Avg salary for civilians working for companies like Boeing or Lockheed Martin would be $50k-$70k. We can find jobs as Technical Publication Specialists ($60k plus depending on what company). Our biggest money maker is Database system administrators (DBAs) starting at $90k plus for aviation companies or any at that. But always best to get a degree while you’re in to ramp up the resume.

      Yeah, former OS here going all the way back to my Honorable Discharge in 1980. Even way back then, we struggled in port to ‘look busy.’ Luckily, I was in charge of the secret safe, so anytime there was ‘look busy’ work to be done, I could simply say, ‘ I’ve gotta get some secret safe work to do.’
      In my opinion, OS was the best sea duty rate in the navy, but a struggle in port. There was only so much one could do by grabbing a foxtail to look busy.

      Most ratings have sea duty, it’s the nature of the Navy. Some have more sea duty and some more shore duty, it all depends on the rating.
      Seabees have very little sea duty unless ferrying cargo and equipment onboard ships to overseas construction sites. They do have a deployment schedule but from their homebase to an overseas site for months and back to home base. They’re the Navy’s version of civilian construction companies and that’s what they do on deployments. You don’t have to be a Seabee to be assigned to a unit or battalion because they need support ratings like the various logistics, medical, religious, admin, and other ratings for supplies, food, pay, paperwork, healthcare, spiritual needs, etc like a ship or regular shore command.

You will have to pass a pretest before you can even apply and you better be excellent in higher level math skills. In other words, way above your average H.S. Grad. It's hard for the Navy to even keep these people in service, even with bloated reenlistment bonuses. In this field I've even seen "slick arm chiefs" (no hash marks).

    Brionna thank you so much for working on these videos! I was wondering do PR work mostly on a ship?

    • @kaseywoody4951
      @kaseywoody4951 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's about 50/50. Half of the time PRs are with fleet units (sea duty) and half of the time at shore stations over the course of a 20-year naval career. That is assuming you are going active duty. If you go the reserve route, shore stations probably your entire time. Are you wanting to be on a ship or would you rather be on the shore?
