    I served as an OS from 90-2000. USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71) and then ACU-4 (LCAC Navigator).
    On the Roosevelt I served as a supervisor in TOP (tactical operations plot - dealt with the safe navigation of the ship), Data Link Coordinator (Link 11 and 16), and ASUW (Anti-Surface warfare - where we had our GCCS variant). Controlled aircraft to visually confirm ships in our area of operations as well.

    I was an OS back in 1975-79 Got out as an OS2. Was COMTACPUB librarian so had a space below decks all my own to store and correct pubs. Also was lookout training petty officer which I really enjoyed doing in port. Better then cleaning or chipping when I was a new 3rd class. We stood mostly 8 on 8 off port and starboard watches at sea with our lack of personnel. Because I had a TS clearance as the pub librarian I was selected for the PRP and was the #1 guard when handling nukes and was on the SAT team as the reaction force so I was qualified with all the ships personal weapons, riot shotgun, .45 and M14 back then, during alerts I would run up to radio central and then don a flak vest, helmet and M14 they had in there even with just skivvies on. We didn't go to the armory as it was possibly compromised. Loved the M14 great weapon for on deck but the shotgun was better in board for repel boarder drills, you just point it down a compartment and fire without exposing yourself. And because of that I didn't stand any quarterdeck watches in port I was the roving patrol. That was the best watch standing duty on board. Report in irregularly but at least within an hour, so I could report in after I do my rounds checking the nukes and other spaces then go up to CIC in the air-conditioning, wonderful in the Western Pacific, drink coffee, eat and watch our tv or listen to music on our quad system we bought in the PI at the Navy exchange and installed in CIC, it was a different time mind you. Great memories and if I had to do it all over again, I wouldn't change a thing.We worked hard at sea but made up for it inport! They hated that! We were showered and dressed and waiting for the gangway to go down! First off last on, couldn't radiate until we cleared the pier! Just had everything in standby. Much simpler operating back then.😂

      @@CharlonClarke It was a different Navy for sure and so long ago but the memories run deep. Still wear my OS2 hat. One of my favorite experiences was working with EOD teams getting them qualified for their Surface Warfare badge. I was really into the manuevering board and would teach the officers too. As you know they did respect the OS rating. As a reward for training the EOD when we got to Subic they took me with them for training at their jungle survival course and then blowing up stuff. Some reward earth bugs and snakes and getting bit by every insect in Southeast Asia. But I did get to hang out in the bar on Magsaysay drive by the jungle that the Special Warfare operators frequented, that was an honor, crazy bastards that they were! Mostly Vietnam combat vets then. Semper Fortis!

    RD2 from da “old days”; Tin Can man; never studied for rank advancement but passed every test 1st increment. NGFS from VietNam. Lots of your terms were new to me, but interesting anyway. One thing about our rate, it’s made to be underway. If you don’t wanna go to sea, don’t be a RD (OS now). Another thing, in my “off time” I slept. Others may play but when Os’s are off watch, their in the rack.

    • @CharlonClarke
      @CharlonClarke  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      when it comes to deployments OS would deploy the most due to our mission. YN's on the other hand being admin there are orders that some get to where they're not really on ships. I know a couple of YN's who only been on 1-2 ships their whole career and have only done either shore or "flag" commands. When it comes to deployments each ship mission is different. I can't give a solid answer on that sadly, but roughly I'd say every year and a half?

    I’m trying to convert to OS from engineer been in 3 years but kinda feel nervous on being the new guy that’s a petty officer 2nd class that doesn’t know anything about OS yet. But the OS’s on my ships are cool and taught me a bit what asvab score is required for OS?

    • @CharlonClarke
      @CharlonClarke  ปีที่แล้ว

      I had a 43 whenever I chose OS before joining the Navy , so I'm sure anything within that range and higher. No need to worry about going in as a new Second Class, we're all willing to help out. I've come across a couple folks that were in your shoes also and they were taken care of

      @laxplayer3950 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When I was in in the early 90’s the ASVAB score didn’t matter that much. It really depended on the command. While I was in we actually had two guys cross rate from engineering rates to OS because of our Captain’s recommendation! Keep your head up! Hopefully it still works that way!

    Greetings! I've qualified for; IT, OS, AV and other ratings but I'm interested in the ones that I wrote. On 19 of December 2023 I'm going to swore and I'm still struggling in which rating to choose. I've seen your video twice and it is the more informative that I could find on IT and thanks for that. I've seen a lot of videos on these different ratings and I'm still looking for more information. If you could tell me which would be better in the terms of the working environment (excluding the IT because you've already explained it).

    • @CharlonClarke
      @CharlonClarke  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hey no problem! Not sure about AV honestly since I've never worked with them before. Work environment? IT's will work in their own space with maybe two other jobs. While OS's we have alot of rates in combat. Due to a lot of warfare areas and expertise on any given day for an OS, you can be working with roughly 7 rates on a single watch. But in port if you have a good division, the work environment is good due to people wanting to do a good job so they can go home. Hope I answered your question!

      Great question! honestly, it depends on the platform that you're on and the mission. I was on a cruiser for 5 years and we deployed twice. because for most deployments we have phase to fix the ship, parts, etc. I would say about 1 every other year or 2 years depending on the platform and their mission.. Hope this helped!
