- The Chaos Dwarfs of Zharr Naggrund, the Dawi Zharr, are a race in Warhammer fantasy who will be a DLC or expansion race for Total War Warhammer 2 or Total War Warhammer 3. This video will cover the lore, army compositions, units, and tactics of the Chaos Dwarfs, as well as Chaos Dwarfs Legendary Lord choices and how they might be implemented in Total War Warhammer in the Dark Lands.

I would like to see a bit more updated Mesopotamian and Assyrian look with the elite units moving towards the crazy death armor look.
The crazy death armor look does a REALLY good job of distinguishing elite units from the more mainline infantry.

Astragoth Ironhand should be the primary Chaos Dwarf LL imo, rather than the ones you mentioned, seeing as he is the Chaos Dwarf faction leader lorewise, and is in fact the guy who kicked Drazhoath out of the capital - I think you got him and Ghorth the Cruel mixed up with each other in parts. Couple that with the fact that Astragoth has a pretty badass miniature, and had some cool unique rules in 4th ed too.
IMO there should be three playable Chaos Dwarf factions:
The main one, led by Astragoth,
a competing one, led by Ghorth but with Zhatan as a second LL
and the exiled faction, led by Drazhoath.
There could be some sort of influence system between the chaos dwarf factions, similar to the politics in Rome 1/2 (although hopefuly more refined, so gaining control of all the chaos dwarf minor factions is done less through outright conquest, and more through other means - obviously Astragoth would start with the most influence, but maybe gain at a slower rate, while Ghorth starts with less and gains at a greater rate, due to his increasing power, while Drazhoath would start with very little influence, and major penalties with Astragoth's faction.
Also btw there is NO WAY Drazhoath is a more powerful sorcerer than Ghorth. Ghorth is specically meant to be the up and coming most powerful chaos dwarf sorcerer, as Astragoth becomes more and more stony. Drazhoath is almost an exile, sent as far away from the capital as possible, and only lucked out that a chaos horde happened to come past one time.
Actually, Drazhoath is on about the same level as Ghorth. It's explicitly stated that almost no other sorcerer matches him in skill.
There will very likely be at least 3 legendary lords for the Chaos Dwarfs because theyre either going to be DLC (without mini campaign now CA will be doing 3-4 lords per DLC faction) or a headlining faction, which means they will be fleshed out with additional DLC and an extra legendary lord or two. So Astragoth, Zhatan, and Drazhoath are all pretty likely I think. I didnt say Drazhoath was more powerful than Ghorth, I was comparing Zhatan and Drazhoath and said that Drazhoath is probably stronger given his ability as a caster and melee combatant. I like the influence idea a lot, I think that would fit well!
@@milkandcookiesTW the thing is that his body is almost complete stone but he found that if he used technology he could become as resistant as a tank thanks to his rock body and in table top he has a lava canon and a hammer 🔨 of destroying his enemies and his special rule is tough as hell and weakness is a blessing in disguise he should be a legendary lord he has a oficial miniature and important to the lore

The Chaos Dwarfs fielded "Colossus" in at least one of the books. Basically a giant bronze Man Automaton. Probably bound with a Daemon.

In game 3 Chaos Dwarfs could develop railways on conquered lands, almost same way like Lizardmens develop their voodoo... (but visible on campaign map between some settlements), for their iron trains (working similiar to Black Arks, but on rails with additional wagons available instead of buildings) for trade/fast army movement/bonus abilities in battle when train is in range on campaign map.
Would'nt that be cool?

I love the Tomb Kings, the Lizardmen and the Vampire Counts... but the Chaos Dwarves have actually been the most appealing faction to me of all. Flying bulls, a rebellious demon god, dark sorceror lords, giants, cannons, slaves. Fuck yes.
I personally love the Mesopotamian look, and really hope that that's what the Dawi Zhar will look like in game 3.

The Forge-World look for the close combat/range unites looks waaaay better, but regarding the very first and older look should be for the dark sorcerers because of their status within the Dawi Zharr Empire.

I disagree that Drazoath will be the "Primary" Chaos Dwarf LL like Franz and Grimgor are for their factions. I think he will definitely lead the Legion of Azgorh subfaction out of the Black Fortress, probably with upkeep reduction and maybe a unique building that gives him earlier availability to Infernal Guard simmilar to Wurrzag and Savage Orcs and how he can build them earlier and everywhere. I expect the main LL of the faction that is actually called "Chaos Dwarfs" will probably be Astragoth not Drazoath.
Hey Indy, great video as always! Loving the level of detail, feels like you didn't miss anything. I definitely agree their limitations should be reflected with high cost units, and think the point you made on army composition could be an interesting way to go with total war 3. Although you said they're one of the races in decline, I remember the Tamurkhan book saying they've been growing slowly in numbers and influence but are still super limited in numbers relative to their domain.
I think this could work really well flavour-wise combined with what you said on their synergy issues, as they would prioritise dwarf lives by having large numbers of hobgoblins as the first meatshield wave, that won't bother the Dawi Zharr as they break and flee, in order to get a couple of good hits with artillery. Follow up with K'dai and bull centaurs for quick jabs to the flanks, and then the bulk of the army slams them in the front. It'll really give the feel of a cruel slavemaster race that I doubt any of the races could pull off.

I would like to see the Babylonian aesthetic stay, but with a bit of a redesign. I think it could be updated to something a little less goofy and dated. I'm just really excited to see what CA does with the Chaos Dwarfs, their reimagining of old units thus far have been fantastic in my opinion (looking at you, Kroxigors).
If theres one thing i love to do in warhammer its pound stuff into dust with artillary. The vampire coast is my favorite faction, Im absolutely without a doubt so hype for the chaos dwarves. their siege engines look nasty and i want them NOW!

Uzkulak - Plain of Zharr - Tower of Gorgoth - Black Fortress - Daemon´s Stump. All these settlements could be standalone sub-factions ;)
Yeah I think Zharr Naggrund would be "Chaos Dwarfs", Black Fortress would be "Legion of Azgorh" and Tower of Gorgoth would be its own subfaction as well
Don´t forget Daemon´s Stump, Uzkulak and the Falls of Doom! Possibly these place will just be settlements, anyway, we are on the same page here :)

Chaos dwarfs are my favorite faction. Aesthetically they look amazing with their steam punk evil look. And I love their play-style of sitting back and bombarding the enemy with lots of extremely powerful artillery. Sadly not much is written about them as they are truly one of the most unique factions. Do you think they'll create new units like they did with bretonnia since there isn't a lot written about them?

I played Warhammer in the mid 90's. Played High Elves. I had a friend that started playing just as the Chaos Dwarves were released so he obviously jumped on the new thing.
I played against them a heap of times and have fond memories of that time.
I find it interesting that some of the "Iconic" units you talk about as far as I can remember weren't even a unit back when I played.
Then you talk about dropping the Lamasu from the roster when I personally think of it as one of the most iconic maybe even the most iconic unit in the faction.
My friend always rocked his Lamasu in game because it was so strong.
realistically I dont think anything about Chaos Dwarfs is truly "iconic" except for the big braided Beards and the tall Babylonian hats. They aren't a crazy well known or popular faction in the grand scheme of things. Super cool faction though, cant wait to see them in Warhammer 3!
I could imagine them using the steamtrains similar to the black arks, where they would be a seperate army that can travel across the land ( could be restricted in water for balance) have a mechanic that they can add more artillary pieces instead of the black ark unit building and then any armies fighting around the steamtrain get bombardment available to them during the battle.
As tww3 approaches, I'm becoming increasingly excited at the prospect of chaos dwarves being brought in.

Big Hats all the way. Infernal guards are cool, I would like to have them as well, but they are really flavourless in comparison to the babylonian inspired units of the previous editions. This inspiration is the core of the chaos dwarfs faction, chaos dwarfs are unique because of that mesopotamian influence. If GW hadn't given them that particular specificity, they would be just some random chaos warriors who just happen to be dwarfs (as they were at the veeeery beginning funnily enough). Yeah the forgeworld ones are undeniably badass but yet they look like such freakin generic random evil guys!
Btw, I think Astragoth Ironhand (from 4th and 5th editions) is by far the most interesting chaos dwarf tabletop character (he's basically a extremely old dwarf cyborg priest with sorcerer-prophet abilities) and the best potential for a unique ll imo.
Anyway, as a true chaos dwarf fanboy I must thank you for this 1 hour long video about my favourite lil sneaky babylonian slavers bastards, that was truly amazing. Keep up the incredible work! :)

For magic:
Spell 1: grants magical fire attacks and frenzy
The hammer: acts like foot of gork but a hammer
First storm: acts like the quake engine of skaven, massive slow debuff and some damage
I think the unlimited range spell needs some time at the start of the match before it can go off.
Miscasts can be worse for Dawi Zhar by as well damage reduce speed for the rest of the battle substantially. Or maybe reduce melee defence whilst boosting armour.
This and the ogre video are my favorite. The 2 best races in my opinion

BTW love this lore video. thanks for making it. i think making a army like this with the pure chaff that doesnt even register on the main units moral would be interesting. high costs and small unit sizes for the high teir dwarven units and low costs and high unit sizes for the slaves. combined with one of the coolest monster rosters in game + a TRAIN of arty love.... make it rain.

Personally i like both designes for armor. I hope we still get the babylonian style though. That just looks so cool on them ^^
By the way, there is another recent named character for chaos dwarfs named Shar'tor the Executioner. He's a bull centaur which would add some nice diversity for the legendary lord choice :D

Fantastic Video as always Indy, bit disappointed you didn't mention Astragoth Ironhand as I think he has some fascinating lore to him but otherwise a Really Good Production, as always.
I know that this was the Video I Requested from my Patreon level and I'd likely have to wait a while for the possibility of another, however until then I figured I'd mention that now that the Dawi-Zharr have been covered I'd be most interested to see something on Kislev and/or the Ogre Kingdoms.

I know I'm going off topic slightly, but you mentioned Ungrim a couple of times throughout this video. But did you mention to CA about giving certain Legendary Lords their own factions? Like Ungrim and Karak Kadrin. Seeing as there is a path that leads to the Dark Lands just north of Gnashrak's Lair. It would make sense to give Ungrim a starting position at Karak Kadrin, so he can hold off the Hobgoblins, Chaos Dwarfs and Ogres from there.
CA knows some people want it but it might not be in the cards. They may just decide other things are more important or feel like they dont want to put him there for gameplay reasons. I have no idea if they will move him or not
I'd be interested in you revisiting the roster and lords/heroes discussion as we get closer to the third game since so much has changed about CA's design philosophy since you made this. This is pre-Norsca even. How time flies!

Babylonians and Assyrians pretty much sprung from the same root of Akkadian-Sumerian amalgamation. They were both city-states that emerged from the ruins of Neo-Sumeria. Assyria taking the forefront first, then Babylonia taking it later towards the sixth century BC. I'd say, for general fantasy purposes, they're pretty indistinguishable.
Like a lot of stuff in WH, I think it's a soup.

In light of the Black Arks for the Dark Elves, I think the Dreadquake would probably be a special army ability rather than an actual unit on the field, it's just so huge and unwieldy I can't see it being made a proper unit, though that would be super cool. Maybe they'll have an 'artillery train' special army that can launch dreadquakes, reinforce with forged siege-monsters and whatnot into nearby battlefields. I dunno we'll have to see in a couple years when they're done with TW:WH2
Looking at this.. what I'm seeing is that the vampire coast are essentially the testbed concept for several chaos dwarf units. The queen beds is an earthquake mortar, hand cannons can be equated to hailshot blunderbusses, etc

And here we are, less than a week away from the Chaos Dwarf DLC release!
They could do it in a way similar to Skarsnik and Belegar. Having to earn your way back to Zharr-Naggrund to take command and get there before Greasus/Grimgor gets to it to tear it down brick from brick.
Selling units could be an interesting mechanic - you could essentially gift units for influence with the chaos factions, favor from Chaos if that is implemented, and of course you could get more gold.

I know this would be really hard to do but could you give a brief description of all the Empire related factions like Kislev, Border Princes and Ostland.

Draco Spion yeah !! But mostly kislev cz a lot of people want them but I don't know y other than the fucking bears !!!!
Neither Kislev nor the Border Princes are "Empire related" in that sense...
Ostland is one of the Empires provinces, Kislev is the eastern Europe of Warhammer (some say simply russia, but it has the Polish Winged Hussars and is more of a mix of Poland, Russia, Bohemia etc.)
And the Border Princes are a loose confederacy of down to their luck adventurers, disposed rulers and sons that wouldn't inherit any part of their fathers lands... the Border Princes come mostly form Tilea, Bretonnia and the Empire and many of them are not much more than petty robber barons

So thanks for the information but still it would be cool to get a description of those minor human factions on the campaign map.
undertakernumberone1 thanks. I downloaded a mod that allows me to play those minor factions and they all basically had empire units. Thats what confused me.
They have placeholder rosters. While unique in Lore in recent Editions they had no armybooks and overall are considered to be "second class" to the big(ger) races like the Empire etc. So CA gave them simply Empire stuff to just give them siomething in the game

Great video mate. I like chaos dawi much more then regular. Also how are they to their own kind, same as regular dwarfs or more like dark elves? Are they stubborn as normal dawi and hold grudges forever even when they have forgotten the reason or more rational?
And you should explain us how dawi breed because we haven't really seen their women so far.
Dwarfs make babies the same way humans do. The females can be good fighters they just arent frontline combatants so we're never going to see them. They hold grudges and are stubborn in the exact same ways as Dwarfs
