    Hi Jeff! Thanks for the video! Never hit the valve cover with a hammer or mallet! Always try some finesse while trying to pry it of! Ether tapped with 1 x 4 or take the exhaust cover off to have room to pry it it off! Also, don’t run the engine more than a few minutes with the water running thru the pump.

      Great tips! I was not going to reuse the water pump. Correct! as long as you only run it for 30 seconds or so without water, no pump damage should occur

    Thanks for the video. I have the same engine (HONDA GC160) on my Billy Goat leaf blower, it's over 10 years old and never checked the valve clearance.

    @5:14 - really, either is correct - the TDC you want is at the end of the compression stroke and the beginning of the combustion stroke.
    The TDC you DON'T want is between the exhaust and intake strokes.
    Typically, I rotate the engine till the intake valve closes then continue to rotate the engine as I feel for TDC with a soda straw (hard to break and lose in the engine) on top of the piston (through the spark plug hole).

    Jeff, thanks for the video. I would not hammer it off. The rocker arm shaft pins are held in place by the valve cover, the side you dented. Would not run the water pump without water. The other stuff was good.

      Thanks! Good tips. Yes, no water in a water pump is bad. I was planning on scrapping the water pump

    Compression stroke is correct..the combustion stroke is after the the spark plug fires and the piston is on the way down.

    Any ideal what wrong with my pressure, it is work on yellow, green and black tips, but the pump will stop and go when I using white or red tips!

    Don't you need to scrape off the old sealer and apply new high temp silicone sealer?

    It is not said, but the need to put the OHC cover on top is to avoid losing all the engine oil.
    Speaking of this valve cover, nobody says there is oil behind!

    Never run the engine without water through the pump! Never hip valve cover with a hammer or mallet! You have to use some finesse to pry the cover of! If you take of the exhaust cover, you will have room to pry it off! Other than that nice video!

    The service manual says Intake lash should be .15 on intake and .20 on exhaust, why are you using .006 and .008

    • @jeffslawnmowerrepairandservice

      ?? weird, when I looked it up these were the specs I found

    • @billybadass601
      @billybadass601 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s the same thing! .006 equals .015 inches 😂😂😂😂

      @tonybieker9306 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      One is mm and one is inches einstein

      The cam gear has two marks to indicate top dead center.
      If it hasn't jumped time.

      The .006 and .008 are thousanths of an inch and the .15 and .20 are millimeters. They are the same specs. There are 25.4 mm to the inch, so .006 inches X 25.4 mm/inch = .15 mm.

    Use a 1x4 or 2x4 piece of wood against the cover... no dents.
    Hammer hits wood, not metal.

    Good fix but running the pump without water will burn it up very quickly.

    Broken exhaust rocker is a relatively common problem with GCV 160/190s.
    Don't replace that rocker without checking out my fix for valve guide contact. Otherwise, you might be replacing it again.

      I'm working on my GXC 190 as I'm watching a refresher here. Sat for a long period n it was extremely hard to crank ie. When I did get it cranked it ran like shit n smoked. I attributed it to the engine being upside down while I installed a new pump.So per all reports the EV was probably stuck & a cracked rocker arm, right? I was expecting to find the same, but it's my intake rocker arm pin. The pin is bent. It's caused the arm to b extremely wobbly. I'm certain the valves need resetting. It literally bent that solid steel pin. 😬It was a PIA getting that outta there too. I think the Rocker Arm is bent too. Not taking any chances. No cracks tho.

      @@kellywilliams9194 Wow. I can only wonder. Perhaps oil was allowed to fill up somewhere and you hydraulic-ed the valve? I don't know. Those parts are relatively inexpensive. I'd change rocker and pin. I think the rocker assy was only about $7. If it were mine, I'd assume that the exhaust valve guide was eventually going to migrate outward (if it hasn't already), and I'd do the modification on it, as outlined in my video. Make sure you at least try to tap the exhaust guide back in until it fully seats, just to be safe.

      netdoctor1. I felt like I need to take the springs off to further inspect the seals. Do you have a video of removing and installing those? I'd appreciate any help. See I had never had a problem with the engine. So I'd already mounted the new pump.I gotta tear it all back down now don't I? Putting that pump on by myself, n w/no shop, vice etc. That was a damn nightmare. That's what I have 2 do right? Like I said, I already have the springs off.Thnks again for your videos and your pointers

    • @netdoctor1
      @netdoctor1 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kellywilliams9194 I don't have an additional video showing that process. I suggest that the most important thing to keep in mind, if you're going to remove or reinstall the valve springs and keepers, is leaving the piston at Top Dead Center. That will assure that the valve cannot be pushed back into the cylinder, which would be a nightmare if allowed to happen. The springs are not very stout, and it's relatively easy enough to pop the keeper in place on the valve stem.

      yes running a water pump for too long without water can damage the pump. For this, I was only going to use the engine to put it on a minibike.
