      There's nothing wrong with 8cr13MoV - it depends what you're using your knife for and how often. It's a cheap and cheerful steel that's easy to sharpen/strop. What's not to like at such a low price?

    • @brianf9619

      @@sputumtube -- Your right there's nothing wrong with 8cr ,as long as it's the right price , but when Kershaw , CRKT, and Spyderco are charging over $40 for it. , then theirs a problem and I'll take the D2 .

      @@brianf9619 Absolutely Brian, I reckon the same goes for AUS8 as well. A few years ago there were a great many knives with AUS8 which we all bought and used (I still use my AUS8 CS Lawman and K-Bar Dozier) until better steels became cheaper and more readily available. The advanced steels are all well and good if you're content to pay two or three times the price of budget steels, but more often than not they're more brittle, easier to break/chip and infinately more difficult to sharpen in the field. I have a few knives with better steels (ZDP189, CTS XHP, Cruwear, V-Toku2 etc) but I don't use them any more than my cheaper knives with 8cr13MoV or AUS8.... 'Horses for courses' you might say..Lol..;)

    If someone would have suggested not that long ago that I'd be watching an Aussie on TH-cam cutting yards of rope until he was soaked in sweat, while I air-guitar to the background music, AND enjoyed the total fuck out of it, I would have told them to get bent. Yet...here I am loving these videos for reasons I cannot fully explain.
    Big props for the abuse you suffer for us steel nerds, dude. Based on your numerous videos I know exactly what I need, for what job, and when to use it. Personally, I am a big fan of D2; I have numerous knives with that steel and they have always been a workhorse with no issues.
    One thing I find odd is people say it is easy to rust, and I will take their word on that, but I live literally 100 feet from the ocean and not one of those blades have a speck of rust. I have never 'oiled' a blade in my life, but I always wipe them off when done, so maybe that is it? I dunno.

I do have the razorsharpe system when I need a blistering blade done in 3 minutes or less, but whole heatedly love the freehand style. The Japanese water stones are another area you can spend a lifetime collecting and they are just as much fun as collecting the knives we use them on. Thanks for all you do.

    Thank you to the RAT 2D2 for making my work life simpler. I use mine every day to cut, drip irrigation lines, cordage, copper wire insulation, hard plastic, branches. Stays crazy sharp for a month! I hand sharpen it on small DMT plates to a ragged edge at 20 degrees per side.
    I have heard that D2 gets sharper on the DMT than on the Ken Onion because of large carbides in the edge being cut or dislodged respectively. I haven’t done the science though...
    Thanks for this informative, fun video.

    been waiting for one like this since the a-z vid. thanks! would be rad if you tried some other makers' D2 as well. curious if steel will's D2 matches up with what you're getting from ontario. i feel like you only tested their m390, and its from a different factory. their cutjack in D2 is a similar price to the rat 2. Big Brown Bear was saying on the DBK podcast that people who like D2 tend to prefer a toothy edge so it would be neat to see some more testing regarding that as well.
    thanks again for all your hard work, and really, do us all a favor and take precautions to avoid injury. we need more testing, not an injured pete. who will carry the bro-science torch if you fall apart?

  • @Abbbb225
    @Abbbb225 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Cedric, I like your videos. It's hard to do scientific knife steel tests because of all the variables, but I appreciate that you're trying to move in that direction. Some things I'd like to see more of are comparing different knives of the same steel to see how blade size and edge geometry factors in; comparing the same knife in different steels (just get a bunch of spyderco mules or continue with shannon steel labs) to isolate the steel performance (then you can fine tune with polish/sharpening/running at different angles); and comparing the same or similar knives in the same steel with different heat treats (shannon steel labs, again, or just finding similar knives of the same steel from different suppliers). You could also do wear tests on the steel without edge testing, i.e. get bars of heat treated steel and drill into them or pass them on a belt sander or disc grinder with the same pressure and see how long it takes to work through it (or how much they eat through the bit/disc). You could also test plastic deformation with bending or blunt pressure, etc. (might be interesting to research industry standard tests).

    Nathan’s edge = about 50% more than yours? Amazing. I think that kind of variation, admittedly w/o scientific method, is very very interesting. To me, it throws into question ALL the “how many cuts” tests out there as being AT LEAST as much about edge characteristics as about steel characteristics. It also makes me think that the good ol’ factory edge can usually be improved upon by about 50% with a really well applied treatment. Your testing also kind of underscored my belief that a good convexed edge is more about field durability and further about ease of field resharpening that about being wicked scary. Lastly...I have both the R2 D2 CF and it’s big bro. There’s no better “value knife” out there IMHO. Well...maybe the Kershaw Link in M390...but that’s a whole new story. Good job here BTW. Many thanks.

      Yeah, but in his last Q & A, he said that he wasn't going to incorporate BESS testing because his tests have never been meant as a definitive guide to edge retention. It's just his method. It's consistent in terms of the edges makes and the media he cuts. Pete also encourages peeps to check out other edge testing channels that use BESS testers (like NJMS EDC) amongst other methods. In a follow-up though, it might be cool to send the knives to NJMS first so he could test them, then send them to Pete for the cut tests.

    Thanks, I love D2 but would like to see more blade coatings on it , My Steel Will Intrigue has a rust spot but I work outside a lot and it may be from a rainy day. I now store all 4 of my D2's with a light coat of oil.

    Brillinat vid Pete! Thanks again for doing this, such a cool lil experiment! Very cool to see how the different systems went... The Ken Onion grinder attachement is certainly nothing to be scoffed at... the edge I put on that took 20min tops! Hats off to Nathan Stuart for blowing us out of the water with the TSProf... I wonder how much time he spent on that bad boy?

    In my opinion D2 is still a solid steel it rusts a little bit but it holds an edge just fine. The average guy who carries a knife never lets it get dull before he resharpens anyway. Seems like most EDC guys don't really need a sharp knife they just want one as a accessory.

    I wonder how varied the results would differ on most knives with this similar test. I'm really surprised by the range of difference. Heat treat could be a factor too but would be very difficult to tell.

    I was surprised to see that the lesser polished edge of yours Pete was the least performer I would have thought with the bigger carbide structure in standard D2 it would have stayed aggressively cutting longer. But clearly once again you've showed that more acute angles and higher polish makes all the difference really no matter what the steel.

  • @funurayt050
    @funurayt050 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Your edge didn't last as long because it was not as polished as the rest but I applaud you for adding a more coarse edge to the test because now we know d2 likes a good polish. I love your videos because your tests are how I used to test my own knives. When you get a different knife you test it the way we want to see it tested. Keep that up and we will keep watching. In my humble experience edge angle is king thinner edges are always better the higher initial sharpness allowes them to cut longer. If you go too thin and the edge fails that's ok microbevels are easy and quick to apply. Thin edges are always better assuming you use a knife as it was designed and not as a gasket scraper or pry bar. Keep up the awesomeness I will happily keep watching.

    congratulations for the videos and the tests. Do you think this type of localized friction quenching is really superior? Have you done any tests to verify? I find it interesting in terms of flexibility, but I don't know if in terms of strength and durability, sharpening and durability can be better. there they say it's more in my logical reasoning it can't be unless the friction somehow improves the forge to become more comprehensive. thank you for your work in unraveling the secrets of steels and the companies that treat and sharpen them. it cost . I'm Brazilian and I translated everything on Google translator. I do not understand English .
