That's the Civivi Hooligan. The finger grooves are just right for my small hands. Happy to know it cuts well. I also have shop-made Doziers and pleased with them. Thanks for the demo.
Massive rope cutting, paper cutting action going on here. Very stimulating. These Chinese budget d2 knives seem to be a head of the curve when it comes to value.
If you can get your hands on one, I’d love to see the results of Demko’s D2 on the 20.5 from Knife Center. Apologies if I already posted this on another video. Thanks for your work!
Everytime I am looking for a specific video about knife steel, your channel always comes up as having pretty much the only content that I'm looking for
I’ve rewatched the Spyderco Advocate video 3 times this week. It is truly the crown jewel of TH-cam. If anyone reading this has seen it yet, clear the next 30 minutes of your life. You’re in for a treat. Also loving my new materials shirt. Maybe someone at blade show next year will get the reference.
I recently got into collecting knives. Love the D2 steels for edge retention. Recently bough Kizyar Supreme blanks blades on Amazon (will fit handles myself). I got a Tanto Senpai in PGK, a smaller knife (Colada) in Bohler K340 and a big chopper (Bastardo) in Sleipner. Delivery will take a while unfortunately.
Love your vids. I think the Civivi is called the Hooligan. Sorry Pete but I like finger grooves. In April I didn't own any knives in D2 , now I have 4 including a CJRB ( the Briar ). Glad you did this test. ATB from the U.S.
Editor Pete is my new favorite character. (Don't tell bricky.) Thanks for this test. I've been happy with D2 but I only have it in the Rat II and the Steel Will mini Cutjack so a small sample size.
I’ve used exactly one knife with finger grooves I actually like, a way oversized rubberized cutco filet knife with 5 grooves so you can hold it back or forwards, other than that they’re just annoying and make most ways you want to use the knife uncomfortable.
Great content as always. Any chance the particular blade shape on the Rat contributed to the result? (the belly is very pronounced, and could therefor encourage use of a smaller portion of the blade through cutting ergonomics).
I have been socked into the supersteel marketing ploy but for most people's uses glad you confirmed dont waste you money. Buy a good d2 knife. Civivi and bestech are good for me. Thanks for all the time you put into these tests.

I knew it, I said in one of my videos the other day that for some reason I suspect the RAT's D2 is just not as good as other D2 I've used in the past. I have never done any actual testing for comparison, just regular day to day use. But I just had a feeling the D2 was a little softer than it should be.
Hey big shooter I finally finished Vinland Saga at your request and holy cow good recommendation. I’m not usually a Manga guy, but I really enjoyed this. Any way here’s one for you Goliath on Amazon Prime had me hooked so fast I had to binge the first season in one night...lol. Take care buddy.

Great video mate, I own some of those blades. I'll take D2 over 8cr . Have looked at Work Tuff Gear? They have some very nice fix blades. Keep up the great work.
Hi I'm not sure if you know this one on the kme system if you want a more accurate angle you can flip the rod gide upside down. Hope you find this helpful
I love how wonderfully inappropriate you are at random times. It's refreshing and relaxing. I don't feel the need to wear a jacket and tie to your videos.
This cut test made me respect D2 more. Pretty decent edge retention for a relatively cheap steel and good heat treatment. I'm not sure I would get a D2 folding knife though. Seems like it would be a pain in the ass to keep rust off.
@keaira68 I am comparing it to more stainless steels. I wouldn't want a steel that rusts even more than D2 in my pocket. I think D2 could be okay on fixed blades that are used in relatively dry areas and away from sea water, but D2 in your pocket every day seems like it would be constantly rusting.
i've noticed that many kitchen-knife nerds will flip their knives upside-down when scraping cut foodstuffs off their chopping boards. in my own bro-sciencing i've found that lateral movements on the board will generate dull spots on a blade crazy quickly - like rocking cuts side-to-side when mincing garlic etc. i wonder if unca pete might investigate this at some point - like comparing a standard cut test on a blade with one where the knife gets a little lateral twist in the middle of each cut.
I have a Benchmade Bone collector in D2. I’d wager the one I have wouldn’t make it past 200. Pretty sure it was a bum heat treat. It dulls incredibly fast. 20 degree edge semi polished
I find that the bump up from 8cr to d2 from some of the budget production companies comes at a bit too high a price. For me, it's easier to justify impulse buying a $30 kershaw with 8cr than the same knife for $60 with d2. I know ppl have been asking for d2 for a long time, but it's still a bummer for me personally
Which of those D2 tested blades will chip easier? I’m not talking DBK style cut a brick in half. Just what a regular joe might encounter that would chip a blade.
Hi Pete, Love your videos! need your help with something, I just bought a CRKT Caligo from eBay, there are two releases of it the cr8mov13 and The exclusive one from blade HQ in D2 ( Which I WANT), I'm Shipping it to Iraq right now, my question is there an easy way to know if its the D2 one? I ve never handled any of those steels.
Not D2 steel related, but Pete you're the steel expert so couple of questions for you: I have a Benchmade Valet (M390) and a Kizer Gemini (S35VN) and i've reprofiled them with a KME to about 16-17 degrees. Razor sharp, but maybe too fragile? Both blades have chipped after only breaking down a few boxes. Is this normal? Do I need to reprofile again to a sturdier edge by have a higher degree bevel? Like 18 degrees? Should they still slice really well?
I have the Kizer Gemini. It certainly should not chip. My edge height is about 0.6mm (not sure of angle as I don't use KME). Are you sure you are not hitting staples in the box??
krissmith007 I’m not positive-I don’t recall seeing staples, but I cant rule out the possibility entirely. Still, disappointing to see this happen on two of my knives now (which are supposed to be decently high end), and with not much use. I’ll clean up the edge on my KME (already did so on my Valet), so not a huge issue. I do recall Super Steel Steve mentioning something about needing to burn off factory edges, which may have more brittle steel due to the production process, so maybe that’s it. I just wasn’t sure if I was putting too shallow of a bevel on my blades making them too fragile, so was seeking advice.
I know this is a little bit late but I'd like to see one of a cryo D2 if it's any different than a regular D2 once again I know this is late so if you get this
Just curious, you mentioned you sharpened up to 1500gr and stropped on .1 micron. Just curious as to what angle you sharpened these knives to. I had and loved my Ontario rat 1 d2 until it grew legs and disappeared. I've upgraded since but have missed it terribly
@@CedricAda thank you sir. I will probably replace the rat with another one and give this angle a shot. I had mine at a full convex and it was brilliant
