  • For episode 7 of WTP we work on some groove independence. After finding out about this 3/4 Polyrhythmic groove from the Modern Drummer Podcast, I decided to give it a go. As well as try 5's and 7's over it... FUN STUFF! Enjoy!

    I'm working on this at the moment, along with the vocal line. Today was the day I first landed it after practicing it during my last few sessions. It's all about those reps until it becomes second nature. This breakdown is great.

    The hi-hat pattern is actually straight 16th notes, opening on every third note. It ends up giving a similar feel to the pattern you're playing but may be a bit easier to learn. There's an explanation by D.C. in the February, 1997 edition of Modern Drummer.

    I've only subbed to two drummers over many, many years: "Wardrums", and a guy named Andrew McAuley. Wardrums just does really cool covers, and Andrew is a low-key pro who has played with some of my heroes, and he releases tasty little soundbyte material every single day. But you sir, you have earned my sub out of sheer respect for how you make learning easy and fun, and you seem to have plenty of content. I don't think I've seen a single commenter left wanting something you aren't providing. I appreciate your approach, too - so many people just can't be bothered to break things down in a no-nonsense and no showboating type way, they're usually just like, "Here, do it like this" and then they pull off some mind-blowing patterns and never discuss the execution in much detail. But I like how you do things. Thank you, good sir.

Just getting the coordination to play this kind of groove drives the determination. Buggered if I'm ever gonna play these in a band.😂

    • @BrandonScottDrums
      @BrandonScottDrums  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nando Peyton Yeah I’ve been having trouble ducking the audio from my camera and my interface and finding proper levels because they are ALWAYS changing... I really need a Lav mic or some kind of proper vocal mic so I don’t have to adjust audio in post. Any suggestions?

    • @FernandoCuadro
      @FernandoCuadro 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BrandonScottDrums What's your setup?. do you use the same mic for the kit and the voice?
      if that's the case the only solution is to write a script record drums and voices on different takes.
      Sadly if it is saturated from the begginning there's no real solution. If you set the levels for the voice the drums sound saturated if you set levels for the drums the voice doesnt sound.
      So yes buy more mics. or do separate takes.
      To be honest i do love your approach to show the process of learning and the mistakes. So making separate takes, could take that away.
      And i think that is kind of your thing by now. And is amazing, so if it was for me, i leave it like it is until you can buy better mics.
      Thanks for the reply!! Much love from uruguay!

      I record my drums with 6 mics into my Scarlett 18i20 interface and use my camera audio. In Premier I line up the two audio clips and just cut the camera audio when I’m playing drums.

    • @FernandoCuadro
      @FernandoCuadro 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@BrandonScottDrums oh, well the thing is you have to set gain EVERYTIME. Other thing that can happen is: Summing up distortion from plugin to plugin, if you use effects, just eq, compression etc. ALWAYS mute everything and see if the output of a plugin matches the gain of the next plugin.
      For Example is very common that people have lets say a eq, and then a compressor. They put both plugins and since the output of the compressor is set to less than 0, when you see the output of that channel you dont see it go red, BUT there's the chance that the eq output is saturating, so the compressor lifts up the volume of the channel (eq saturation included), but you dont get any notification on the faders.
      What i woould do (and yes is a bit of work) is:
      Making a template, having a folder channel (subgroup) for all the drums (to this channel you can put a tape, compression general eq.)
      on the master output of the daw use only some kind of spectrogram plugin (like waves PAZ analyzer).
      set all channel gains and put all the plugins you usually use.
      NOW EVERYTIME you are going to record, you WILL have to set gain, but since you have a template with practice this will only take you five minutes.
      Check not only for the gain of every channel but for the gain from the output of one plugin to the other.
      And use the analyzer to help you with the EQ so you can see the spread of frequencies by channel.
      Sorry for the long answer.

    • @BrandonScottDrums
      @BrandonScottDrums  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nando Peyton DANG! You seem to know your audio stuff. Honestly I record directly into GarageBand. I do a bit of EQ and compression and that’s about it! I don’t even have proper studio monitors to mix this stuff. I always try to set the gain so it’s not peaking but sometimes it’s tough to tell. I’m no audiophile but I should really get deeper into this stuff. It kind of goes hand in hand with what I do. 😂 Thanks a ton for the advice! I appreciate the long answer and your time!!!

    Hey Brandon, I'm trying to get more into these types of drum beats but I dont feel like it's a good idea to start with something crazy like groupings of 7 like that. What do you suggest to practice first? (I started as a rock drummer, transitioned more into blues, then a mix of psychedelic and jazz and now im trying to get into this type of playing. idk what to call it... funky? gospel-y? hip-hop-ish?) I have pretty much always avoided this because I didnt think I'd need it as a rock drummer (and frankly it scares me) but I need to make a step in a new direction. Also just to get a new style under my belt and become more rounded.

    • @BrandonScottDrums
      @BrandonScottDrums  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ruben Spoolder Hey Ruben! Hmmm, have you tried using rudiments in your grooves? Most rudiments are basically mixing singles and doubles. Ever try playing a 16th note paradiddle between the ride (RH) and the hats (LH) and accent the 2 and 4 with the snare? That’s a good intro into mixing singles and doubles while in a groove. If you want more polyrhythmic type grooves than maybe try using 3’s instead of 7’s! 3 is an easy number to work with and repeats after only 3 beats/bars. Check out what a 3 over 4 polyrhythm sounds like and start there! I’m sure there are videos all over TH-cam that will show that. Understanding polyrhythms has helped me SO much recently and it plays a big role in hearing different phrases. Hope this helps man!

      @@BrandonScottDrums thanks for the tips man. Nowadays in the band im in im trying to use a lot of syncopated beats and fills, we play odd time and im trying to fit in more and more ghost notes. For both practice, dynamics and fun and im getting good at it. The stuff that im trying to venture into now is like faster versions of BP halftime shuffle and things thomas pridgen would play. I remember one of the first videos i saw on your channel was the studio tour you did years ago. And in that you showed your meinl 16" extra dry sand hats or something, and the beat you played to show those off absolutely blew my mind! And i guess that type of fast ghost note filled playing is what i want to get deeper in to.
