  • This video is part of a series covering the recommissioning of this 'Norvil' Norton Commando 850 MKIII Roadster. It was built by Norvil in 2012 using new and upgraded parts throughout, including uprated brakes, electrics, starter motor and various upgraded engine parts etc. etc. However, shortly after it was built (only 900 miles on the clock) the then owner decided they didn't like it (too high and heavy for them) and left it sitting in their shed - for 10 years! These videos follow the recommissioning of the bike after its long slumber. This particular video shows the electronic ignition system being inspected and checked. It transpires that this particular bike is fitted with a Pazon ignition, made in new Zealand.

Splendid job Chris! Learned more than a couple of things.

Hi Chris. My Norton 850 recently suffered a lifter pad delamination on the LH exhaust lifter/cam.
Means a full strip down of the barrels to get to the lifters just waiting on the Whitworth tools to arrive before I get stuck into it.
I believe there is an improved version of the lifters as the delamination is apparently becoming more common as Norton's age.
Have you had any experience with this?
Is it possible to reattach the pad? I can't find the parts anywhere in Australia.
    Cheers👍

Hi there, I have heard of the feet of the valve lifters (more commonly referred to as tappets or cam followers over here) delaminating before - but very rarely. I'm unsure if the chances of it happening increase with age. I would suggest you ring Andover Norton over here as they will have the parts and more info on this. They also have a dedicated helpline (option 1 on the key pad) and you can then speak to either Ashley or Simon who will have much more knowledge on this than me. Good luck. 👍

I’ve found an old 74 Norton 850 Commando that hasn’t been cranked in 30 years. I think I need an electronic system like this. Or someone to show me how to set and clean the points.

Whereabouts are you!? If I can help I will, otherwise you may wish to join and then post on the Facebook page that goes with my Restoration Manual - 'Norton Commando Restoration Manual Updates' to see if there's someone else nearby who could help. 👍
