Christy, I've been a silent watcher the past almost a year or so. I always play your videos while I do my own writing and admin-y things, and I love watching your Project Teacup vlogs as I also work on my album which is similarly a big body of work done over a large span of time. It's been so encouraging to hear your insights in the creative process--it feels like having a friend along with me in the journey haha. I'm so happy to see that you're almost at the end, and it definitely makes me feel hopeful about my own work too. Cheers!

Another way to increase the likelihood that you'll catch typos and other mistakes is to start proofreading at the last paragraph and work your way to the beginning. When solely proofreading from the start to the end, in other words in chronological order, you know what the ideas or words are supposed to be, so you're less likely to catch spelling mistakes or missing commas (or too many commas).

We are all waiting with bated breath for, what I know will be, one of the best novels I'll ever read. Your whole entire heart and soul gets poured into everything you do and write. I'm sure this will be no different. Watching you write makes me so proud I tear up sometimes!! I love watching you do what you love. Thinking back through everything you've done to get here. It's just incredible, friend. You have got this! And I'll be here longing to read it when you're done 🖤

FIRST COMMENT! Congrats on finishing draft 4!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I just got up to Chapter 21 and I have 70767 word count on my book so far, not done yet, though!!!!!
You and Abbie Emmons are the best, wherever I have a writer's block, I'd come to watch one of your videos and it really helps me with my writing.
Hope you had a happy July! Right now I'm reading Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens, I am just glad to get my hands on it finally. I got it from the library, but my non-library book I'm reading are...
1.Lord of the rings:Fellowship of the ring.
2.reacher: killing floor by Lee Child.
    3.Passion by Lauren Kate.
I hope yo read your project teacup at some point once it's released.

Hi, love how cosy your videos are and they definitely inspire me to continue writing! As you were talking about your writing process in Word, I wanted to let you know that how you make your Excel sheet is also integrated in Scrivener in the outliner function. It's quite a leap because it takes some time to get used to, but it might be worth a try if you like to have a place where everything is visual. Especially since you can also colour code it (: and if you happen to join Nanowrimo, they often have pretty big discount codes if you finish Nanowrimo so that might be useful!

I totally agree with you about the ease of using MS Word, even though it might not be suited for long projects. I have Scrivener but I find Word and OneDrive much more accessible and user-friendly. I used Word when I was doing my PhD (it was only at the end that I got Scrivener and learnt it could be used for academia) - what I would do is write each chapter in a separate document and edit/format pg numbers. One can then convert the docs to pdf and merge in a single compilation. (Quite complicated and the footnotes could get messed up). Scrivener, in my opinion, doesn't work very well when you want to access your projects on multiple devices.
Looking forward to reading your novel 😀

Speaking of reading aloud, I also find if you are stuck in a writing rut, you can just dictate what you want to say just on your phone. It helps so much because a lot of people can just sit and tell a good story orally, we do it all the time, but when it's time to type you get more intimidated. Just talk to your phone recording like you are telling a story to a friend :)

I write and copy up longhand work into Word, but I store all my chapters in Scrivner - this way I don’t have to worry about having separate word docs for chapters, and I can easily jump around, rearrange, and see it all at once. But I very rarely write directly into Scrivner. So it could still work for you!
If you do give it a go, it would be great to hear your thoughts in a video! 🤗

I’ve always wondered why you emphasize word count rather than story and general editing? I’m not a writer so don’t know the technical aspects and probably asking this wrong. I’ve always thought the plot development and grammar is what determines when it’s complete rather than word count 😅

Maybe this is a silly question, but I was wondering if, focusing so much on the metrics, takes away the passion of being a writer?

    • @christy-anne-jones
      @christy-anne-jones  ปีที่แล้ว +4

Nope! Part of the craft is making the story as concise and engaging as possible. For me, that means trimming out everything unnecessary i.e. making the word count as low as possible. And for someone who's prone to overwriting (a person who could easily and happily blow this thing out to 200k words), I'm just very aware that that is one of the things I need to be acitvely working towards 😊

Hello, I have been silently watching your videos for a while... maybe you explained it already, but I'd like to know how you actually 'draft': you re-write all over the chapters, or you just add/edit/delete parts? As a person who just finished her first first draft... it would be useful to have some info about it :)

Why is the word count such a huge deal? I imagine that a book with a HUGE word count (read: B. Sanderson) would be much less well perceived for a first time publication but is there a reason for needing specifically 100,000 words?

    • @christy-anne-jones
      @christy-anne-jones  ปีที่แล้ว

Brandon Sanderson generally writes epic fantasy. I'm writing commerical. They're two different genres, so traditional publishing houses expect two different word counts.
And the actual goal is to be as concise as possible, so 100k is the general word count I'm aiming for. But the book will most likely be 107k at this point. You can only do what you can do 🤷‍♀️

    This comment is a request.
    Unrelated to your video.
I have been watching your videos and am in awe on how many books you have read and how you try new methods and ways to write. My not so avid reading heart wishes to read so much too.
Not being a published author, I strive to publish my debut fantasy series as soon as I can.
But this comment is to ask for your recommendations on certain plots for fantasy, magic school trope (for writing, as I'm working on my debut series)
I have build a magic world and it's a coming of age, young adult fantasy series and I would honestly love your opinions and suggestions.
So basically, I feel stuck in my story despite working on it for 3 years and since you have read many stories, your suggestion would be of high value to me.
It's a magic school story, with learning magic to saving it, to possessing more magic than others, there's politics, there's a social evil character trying to win over the world.
I need some plot points. Some suggestions.
    Well, take it this way.
You have read many books, seen them in the publishing rounds and you have your favourite themes.
Well I'm interested in adding those themes in my novels.
As many themes as you like, all are appreciated.
If in the future, I do end up using those themes or anything that you wish to see in novels, I will mention your name in the acknowledgements of my book.
    - to be author of HEDS Series (hope soon, so you can see your name in the acknowledgements, do contact me if you find your name and want to give even more suggestions or talk to me regarding my novels)

Why do you send to agents, Amazon has a big platforms for writers, I think you don't need to struggle with agents as I did, I struggled with 14 rejections from local publishing houses even though my children stories are registered in culture ministery which a good sign that my stories are good enough but the philosophy that publishing houses puts is insane and make no sense, that's why from help of American writer and she's like big sister to me I reached Amazon and put all my books there.
I don't know maybe it's your choice and I totally respect it but for me no way getting struggled again.
I hope you don't take my opinion as offensive, I love you so much and I do watch your videos on daily basis because your are such ambitious writer and hard worker too like me.
