One of my teachers from secondary school in Ireland told us about her student days when they would dash off the train from Holyhead and would literally run across Crewe station to catch the train to London - it must have been mad in those days 🇮🇪☘️🇮🇪😍
You recorded this video on my 54th birthday on 2/10/2024 - I’ve passed through Crewe station (reversed out) on a TfW service from Manchester Piccadilly one winter evening before Covid, on my way home to Dublin via Holyhead to visit family and that TfW service took an unusual routing through Stockport - I don’t recall changing trains at Chester on that service though, as we normally would do so, having lived 23 years in Manchester and preferring SailRail - we even departed from one of the nearer platforms at Manchester Piccadilly, rather than the usual Platform 13 🇮🇪☘️🇮🇪😍
1:13 I’d love to do Avanti First Class Manchester Piccadilly Platform 1-5 direct to Holyhead, as I hate platform 13 and I hate changing trains at Chester on SailRail, as it often involves only 6 mins to change trains at Chester at opposite ends of the station with tiny and cramped TfW Holyhead-bound train - at Manchester Piccadilly, when coming from the Metrolink Trams from Shudehill or Market St, it involves going up all those escalators and stairs, going huge distances to get tickets and information and then going all the way up and down to platform 13 - no fun with a big suitcase and Northern Rail Staff won’t let you through within 30 mins of departure time - Oxford Rd is a totally useless calling point for TfW and Avanti services, they should call instead at Deansgate/Castlefield, because it has better links with Metrolink Trams
Great film, Crewe is one of those stations where if you time it right it can be a gold mine!
