I appreciate you so much for taking the time to watch the video! Please feel free to give feedback in regard to the retrospective, and let me know what game I should review next. If all goes well, I plan on reviewing all of the sonic series, as well as DBZ, Resident Evil and much more!
Maybe cause some of the weird and edgy translation of the game, plus shadow controls very slippery a lot of the time. (I still absolutely love this game and I’ve loved it since I was 8)
My personal favorite stages were westopolis, circus park, air fleet, and cryptic castle. I liked how in westopolis the stage starts off with shadow just sorta gliding down the buildings, while dodging those giant lasers. lol. I also liked the design for these stages. The chao in cryptic castle was also interesting, and also kinda cute. lol. Least favorites were probably prison island, and lethal highway, only 'cause of the hero missions though. Idk why, but I had a hard time trying to find the disks in prison island lol. Lethal highway I had a hard time keeping up with the spaceship thingy, haha. : L
Personally lethal highway wasn’t hard for me, i thought keeping up with presidents ship in air fleet was one of the most challenging levels (aside from the one I mentioned during the flashback)
before even hitting play, I just want to say that for me, Shadow is a real Sonic game. And perhaps more importantly, it's the most polished adventure-style game. There's finally a couple extra action buttons so you aren't doing EVERYTHING with B, wall runs and triangle jump finally feel a bit less janky, and being able to grab ledges to jump up is very nice. You can actually see the control improving from SA1>2>Heroes(kinda)>Shadow, only to start from zero again with boost games. (Yes, I'm leaving out '06 from this because it was too janky and unfinished to judge controls-wise) Also the game being rated E-10 is absolutely hilarious, even funnier than the unnecessary amount of swearing to prove that it's edgy and serious.
This makes me wish I had started with adventure 1 instead of shadow for my reviews so I could have a better comparison. While I’ve played all of these games, it has certainly been awhile. In the coming months I’ll be reviewing SA1-heroes and hopefully 06 as well
While I do think Shadow the Hedgehog is sort of messy as a game, there is a charm to it that makes me smile. The "damn not here" is something that feels so obsurd to have in a Sonic game, taht I can't to laugh at it. The phrase has become something my friends and I quote.
I agree with you. It does have a charm to it , and hearing shadow, knuckles and even sonic say “damn” always gives me a good laugh. The story doesn’t know what it wants to be, but it is fun to play
11:40 this happens in modern Sonic games too, tbf I was playing Shadow Generations earlier and once in awhile Shadow just refuses to jump when I hit the button. Like there's a delay that shows up randomly, but usually isn't there.
This was a really great review. I see a lot of negativity aimed towards this game, especially when it comes to reviews about it, and it honestly makes me a bit disappointed, as someone who both loved and played this game a lot as a kid. Shadow the hedgehog may not be a perfect game, but in reality, nothing is perfect, and everything has its flaws, and that's okay. I agree with you, I also still think this game is still really cool to this day, and I also still really love this game. like I'll admit that the minor cuss words were a bit overused, lol, but hey, they did what they could for an E10+ rated game. What I like about this game is that sega tried a different approach to a sonic game. It's much darker, and aimed at a mature audience, and I honestly personally think that kinda suits shadow's character. I personally like the addition of guns, and vehicles, and I never understood as to why some ppl complained about it. I honestly think it really suits shadow and it's also really frickin' cool. lol. That, and especially after the ending of his game, he decides to leave the past behind him and join g.u.n., so it makes sense as to why he uses weapons and drives vehicles, since he becomes a g.u.n. agent towards the end of this game. And yeah, that cinematic opening is so badass. I love it so much. To this day, as a person in their mid to late 20's now, I still really think the cinematic opening and the theme song is really frickin' awesome. It really gets you hyped for the game, and I love how shadow looks in the opening with his rifle, it's just so cool. Also, sorry for the long message, lol. I really liked your review for this game, and you have a really great voice. It's very unique in a good way of course, lol. It's great to listen to. : D
Thank you so much! I’m glad you enjoyed it. Definitely agree with everything you stated here as well. Shadow really is such an underrated and over hated game. And honestly, after re playing some of the earlier adventure games, this is up there in terms of quality for me. They really did a great job making almost every stage feel superb and the premise is just so much cooler than your typical sonic beats the bad guy because plot demands it story
Great video ! You have really great editing ! I only have one recommendation, I would recommend you position your camera above your script , that way it doesn’t look like your reading the script .
Thank you!! I really do appreciate that :) and about the camera positioning I know, it’s a lighting issue from a certain angle that’s the problem. I’m working on it!
I'll always love this game. Also this has the best ground control of any sonic game imo. It's precise at slower speeds and steering down lethal highway at high speeds is so satisfying when you master the controls. I like how you can go really fast and it's not twitchy like adventure but you can still steer unlike the boost games.
I’ve been playing through sonic heroes the past week or so for a future vid, and yeah, I feel bad I even criticized the controls here at all. Much better than A1,2 and heroes
@@mysteriousthirteen yeah, I'd probably say Heroes is the best Sonic game. The gameplay is so deep but the game is so terrible at teaching you everything so I understand why people get frustrated with it. Whilst the controls are pretty sensitive there, I'd say the levels are designed around it as with any game unlike the 2d sections in boost game since the controls in the boost ganes aren't made for 2d.

@@mysteriousthirteen the script is all messed up, Shadow's personality is different and there are LOTS of grammar issues and mistranslations. Play it Retranslated if you can
@@mysteriousthirteen Well, for one, the original japanese version doesn´t has swearing, because swearing as we know it doesn´t even exist in japanese culture, to my knowledge the worst thing you can call someone is "kisama" or "omae" which is just.... a very rude "hey you", or "bastard" if you wanna push it that´s why in most japanese media characters will straight use english swearings like "fuck" or "shit", or japanese adaptations of those words like "shitte" or "shimatta"
On top of that, SEGA of America entirely changed the script in engish, making up stupid lines like "disgusting black creatures, get out of my sight", "where's the damn 4th chaos emerald?" "this is like taking candy from a baby, which is fine by me" In the original japanese script, Shadow's angst is way more grounded and behaves more like he did in Adventure 2 or Heroes, being blunt and distant towards others but never needlessly rude Not only that, the english script introduces a lot of story inconsistencies, like the commander trying to avenge his dead family despite claiming he had no family in the very same cutscene; or Shadow claiming he has to believe in Black Doom in the opening cutscene making you believe he canonically goes the Dark path, while in japanese he only says the Emeralds must hold the answers he's looking for, which perfectly aligns with starting on Neutral and choosing from there
Well, there is a sort of fan remake modded version of this game developed by a fan called "Shadow the hedgehog reloaded". You can find some gameplay of the game and a tutorial on to how to get the game on pc, etc., and a few gameplay videos of test runs by the developer. You should put save states throughout so you don’t need to replay the first level again and again. And a save state for true hero or dark to boot you out of the level before you face the final bosses
Just those changes would be an equivalent to project 06

I am I am I am all of me
I like the game
too bad the western version of the game is terrible compared to the JP
How so?
@@mysteriousthirteen the script is all messed up, Shadow's personality is different and there are LOTS of grammar issues and mistranslations.
Play it Retranslated if you can
@@mysteriousthirteen Well, for one, the original japanese version doesn´t has swearing, because swearing as we know it doesn´t even exist in japanese culture, to my knowledge the worst thing you can call someone is "kisama" or "omae" which is just.... a very rude "hey you", or "bastard" if you wanna push it
that´s why in most japanese media characters will straight use english swearings like "fuck" or "shit", or japanese adaptations of those words like "shitte" or "shimatta"
On top of that, SEGA of America entirely changed the script in engish, making up stupid lines like
"disgusting black creatures, get out of my sight",
"where's the damn 4th chaos emerald?"
"this is like taking candy from a baby, which is fine by me"
In the original japanese script, Shadow's angst is way more grounded and behaves more like he did in Adventure 2 or Heroes, being blunt and distant towards others but never needlessly rude
Not only that, the english script introduces a lot of story inconsistencies, like the commander trying to avenge his dead family despite claiming he had no family in the very same cutscene;
or Shadow claiming he has to believe in Black Doom in the opening cutscene making you believe he canonically goes the Dark path, while in japanese he only says the Emeralds must hold the answers he's looking for, which perfectly aligns with starting on Neutral and choosing from there
im just hoping one day we get a talented developer to remake this game similar to p06 from chaosx
that would be a dream come true
Well, there is a sort of fan remake modded version of this game developed by a fan called "Shadow the hedgehog reloaded". You can find some gameplay of the game and a tutorial on to how to get the game on pc, etc., and a few gameplay videos of test runs by the developer. I believe the fan(s) who developed the game goes by the name "dreamsyntax."
