But it let you play as a annoying Bee, a hedgehog with and without memory who got his own game right after, repetitive lines in-gameplay, terrible special stages, and slippery movement.. Sonic Heroes is really not that good as people say.. However, they made Metal Sonic a good villain in this game.

Very true, although I'm partial to the City Escape Generations level. Heroes' art direction and soundtrack were generally just peak though, so anything featuring Heroes is excellent to be honest.

I gotta say, after playing Heroes again now that i'm older and am better overall, i can definitely say that it's much more fun when u're better at the game and u don't die midway on a level, the later being a very important point tho. When u manage to keep the character levels and u get the right ones u can clear the levels much more smoothly, to a point where u can just use the speed character to clear through most enemies, even some meant to be defeated by the power character (after getting 2 or 3 levels u're able to remove shields from robots by just using the homing atk, killing them much more quickly. also fun fact, when u're able to do this, u're also able to homing atk poles and instantly get into them, without needing to do the tornado jump), but the main issue is that once u die u lose all ur levels, and getting them back midway is a massive chore most of the times. if they had made it so u don't lose ur levels when u die the game would be much better imo
(also i don't mind in general the Chaotix levels, the main issue of their levels is when u end up missing one single thing and then u have to SCAN THE ENTIRE LEVEL MULTIPLE TIMES TO FIND THE CURSED THING U MISSED, AND UNLIKE SHADOW THE HEDGEHOG U ONLY GET A TELEPORT AT THE END WHICH BRINGS U BACK TO THE VERY BEGINNING, SO U LITERALLY HAVE TO LOOP THROUGH THE ENTIRE LEVEL IF U MISS A SINGLE THING)
but yeah, other than the slippery gameplay, u losing all levels on death, chaotix's "scan the entire level multiple times if u miss a thing" and the swamp mission for team dark, the game is still enjoyable for me (for real, i have PTSD with that giant aligator on team dark's swamp mission, because one of the swings always sends u backwards at first unlike the others)
Don’t tell anybody because it totally weakens my stance but when I was originally game recording footage for this video (which came after recording the audio) I thought I’d have to scrap the video because I was actually having a bit of fun on Seaside Hill for that exact reason. I got all my level ups and was able to flow through the level. Then.. yeah then I died halfway through Ocean Palace to some jank and all the fun left my body.
Ideally I would’ve been able to include something about that into the video but I was on a deadline, and I couldn’t come up with a way to add it in that worked. Ultimately it didn’t change my opinion or how I felt, but I’ll say if the default state was the fully leveled up forms, I’d actually have far less negative things to say about it. That said to some degree, the level-up system only makes it so that you can get past combat faster and with less tedium, showing that it’s still fundamentally flawed. But I 1000% agree that maintaining your level ups makes the game notably more fun, especially in the earlier stages, and I could see where someone could find that challenge of holding on to your level ups a rewarding part of the experience.

Basically, my play of the Adventure era games has built skill in the entire era, but also a desire to strive for A ranks. Problem: throughout that entire era, you lose all your points if you die, crippling your rank if you keel over even once (except in 06, funnily enough). At least checkpoints in Heroes mean level ups, but otherwise they’re pretty useless to me, since a death means I’m starting the whole level over. And that’s fine…in SA2; it does also mean I don’t have to deal with my team being crippled on a death, but it’s no doubt more painful when Heroes’ stages are twice as long and when, unlike when I played 06, the bugs in Heroes tend to get you killed.
So basically, pick your poison on death: push through the rest of the level with a team at half the power they’re expected to be, or avoid that fun drop at the cost of starting the entire level over. I pick the latter, since that’s just how I play Adventure Sonic now.

You can technically play as tails without having him flying, though its only if the two others are standing on switches. Also Jon st john still voice big the cat in heroes which is a plus. Yes, the voice actor of Duke nukem voices in sonic heroes.

Huh, I actually had a very similar experience with Heroes.
I loved it when it was new, I used to play the hell out of it and go fir 100%, even when my Gamecube memory card got corrupted every now and then I didn’t have a problem going back and doing that all over again. Then at some point, everytime I came back to Heroes after that I was disliking it more and more. One day, some friends and I casually played through Team Sonic’s run taking turns between levels and by the end of the run we weren’t really feeling it anymore.
Then years later, as in two or three years ago, I marathoned a bunch of Sonic games, including Heroes and forgot why it was that I wasn’t liking the game by the end if that run I did with my friends which was the last time I played it at that point so I was thinking, okay so Team Sonic’s run is at least going to be fun, and not only was I feeling the same by the end of Sonic’s run but I really wasn’t liking the game by the time I finished the other runs. Also I still think Team Sonic has the best run in the game. I don’t agree with what a lot of people say about how Team Rose’s is the best cause while the levels are shorter and waste much less of your time as a result, the levels end so abruptly to the point where in some cases you can see the rest of the level the other teams have to play out in the distance from Team Rose’s goal ring, so to give Team Sonic’s run credit, that is the definitive way to play the game if you were just playing one team in my opinion.
Also when I got to Shadow the Hedgehog during that marathon I was feeling like I was enjoying it more than Heroes myself which was fucking bizarre, so this video was immediately interesting when it came up in my recommendations, lol.
funilly enough i have the exact opposite opinion on which routes are more fun.
sure some routes suck like finding bombs and any objective that requires 100% enemy deletion is aids to complete.
but for every one of those missions there's 2 where it's collecting rings, chasing a retreating ship where the platforming and gunplay work best together, or activating/destroying stuff which changes the route of the level, making say the final nuetral mission or the ark levels (the space ones not the god awful flashbacks) completely different levels between hero and dark runs, nuetral missions have a lot more crossover especially when a mission is just "go to the even later checkpoint"
it's no means a perfect game but it's a nice guilty pleasure, is shadow having a gun fucking stupid? absolutely. does it work on a gameplay level? surprisingly yes, it's overly simple but i personally think that's a benefit noting the turret controls, helps the game stay mostly platforming focused, even with the kill all enemies missions it's still mostly about running through the linier level and taking a specific path.
and well deciding which games missions are more fun, the game with many short levels with only a single you play 10 times and each becoming more unique each playthrough or a game you need to complete 4 times in the same order with stages that easily overstay their welcome by the end with a handful of exceptions, yeah i prefer the variety in shadow the hedgehog.
but i do ultimately agree that while its got higher highs it's got lower lows, like fuck those flashback missions, maria has the worst missions in the damn game.

My frustration with both games is the same with Sonic06, they had some genuinely great ideas but the implementation was awful. They were clearly the lead up to Sonic06. The clues were all there and we didn’t see it coming
I think Sonic Heroes and Shadow The Hedgehog are of similar quality.
But Shadow The Hedgehog becomes much, MUCH more fun when you actually know what you’re doing.
I’d definitely say it’s a more enjoyable game than Heroes. Factor in the ironically lovable aesthetic and silly yet better music… I come back to it more and prefer it greatly.

Imo both games have a huge flaw, an obnoxious requirement to play the final boss. In heroes you need to play the same levels 4 times AND get 7 chaos emeralds, and in shadow you need to get 10 different endings. That being said, I enjoyed my time with shadow the hedgehog more. Some of the levels are decent and I like the weapons and story. Also I genuinely think it’s funny hearing shadow say “damn not here” every 5 seconds.

Just watched a whole video on a take I already agreed with just for confrontation bias. I even felt this way as a kid. (100% shadow, couldn't do the same for heroes)

Every campaing in sonic heroes is like being kicked in the balls full strength.
Shadow the hedgehog routes are like being kicked in the balls with slightly less strength, but they are more.
Ya'll need more subs, smh. :p I still enjoy Heroes for what it is, but this is very well put together.

I'd say both games even out to about equal and both games are neither completely good or completely bad and have elements of both. Almost everything good about the gameplay in both games is outdone by SA1 and SA2 with maybe the exception of Shadow's rail grinding. Shadow can basically be summed up as everything that makes Heroes what it is but injected with teenage angst and compressed into a single playstyle in which you play as just one character with a few small fixes to the controls and a few added bloat features such as the guns and vehicles.
Heroes is fun for me up until Grand Metropolis, and then it's all downhill from there. Shadow has a generally fun neutral campaign that you should never stray from under any circumstance, just watch the other endings on youtube and download a save file if you want to play the final story.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who actually doesn't like Sonic Heroes, I always felt that it was unfun to play, but always wondered if I was just missing something and not going far enough and every time I'd see the game brought up people would generally say it was good, but never really seemed to well explain why causing my doubt in my original perception to grow larger, but never to the point where I abandoned it, but finally I see someone call it out as being bad and decently explaining why. In other words, I'm glad to finally know I wasn't missing something, and my dislike of the game is justifiable.
Both of these games are so nostalgic to me but i dunno I just find shadow much more fun even though they're both bad. I also enjoy shadow's music a lot more but that's probably just because my own personal taste like I love nu metal like linkin park and trust company and deftones. I also like shadow more now so of course I will like shadow the hedgehog better. I still like both games tho
I personally prefer a lot of Shadow more than Heroes, but I can understand why the missions sucked for others. I used to hate a lot of missions but now I've got the most comprehensive video guide on the game.
That said, while the music in Heroes is easier to get behind, I find myself listening to the music in Shadow more. I've been told the genre is "break core" and often listen to The Ark, Central City, Death Ruins, Lethal Highway, and Final Haunt in my free time.
Also Never Turn Back is the best Crush 40 song in a Sonic game, bite me.
Never Turn Back is criminally underrated, 1000%. I respect that take.
And yeah the Shadow OST is still very solid overall, as far as level themes go I’m particularly partial to Final Haunt.

I didn't have a place to add this to my last comment, but there are two songs that were removed from the game because I guess the ones that made it in were more liked by staff, but I imagine it was a hard choice.
Go check out "Broken". Might have to search the name of the game too, but it's a removed track that was probably replaced by "Chosen One".

I just checked it out again and there's a whole album with the two songs removed from Shadow the Hedgehog. If you like Broken try looking up "Sins of a Divine Mother". Someone uploaded a video of said album.
I agree that shadow is better than heroes, but I think that shadow is an actually good game. I got an A rank on all missions, and I had fun doing so. I also had fun with the Chaotix missions, so maybe objectives in levels just click with me in a way it doesn’t for others (and that is perfectly ok). I even liked Shadow’s story better than Heroes, though maybe I just lack taste lol.
I also think that Sonic Heroes is also good if you play it long enough to get a good grip on the controls. Team Dark, if played with a good understanding of the game’s physics, is just as good as some of SA2’s best levels.
No it's not. Heroes doesn't expect you to do 10 different endings to get the Last Story, and Chaotix missions ain't nearly as BS as some of the crap Shadow has to do.

Git gud scrub. Physics might be fucked up, but those are perfectly beatable if you're not trash. There's only so much skill can do for you when dealing with some of Shadow's jank mechanics, all while having to track down X amount of objectives when there's only that many in the level. A level that can be fairly standard, whatever Mad Matrix is, or fucking mazes like the ARK levels.
I would rather play all ending a thousand fucking time, than just do those Chaotix missions in Heroes, there is no way your considering this mid game a top tier unless it's a childhood..

Glad someone else agrees. I don't even think Shadow is bad outside of a few missions (the ARK) while Heroes felt like a chore to even get through Team Sonic's story.
In my personal unbiased opinion of a person that is a fan of Sonic Heroes, who played it since childhood and have never ever played Shadow the Hedgehog, I'll say that Sonic Heroes is better.
On a (little bit) more serious note, I feel like all the fans of Heroes are aware of it's flaws. After all, you need to literally defeat these flaws in a brawl (yes, that's the best way I could describe it) to beat the game and have fun with it, so yeah.
Valid. I’m no stranger to being a fan of flawed Sonic games, I casually speedrun Sonic Adventure 2 bcs I love it so much and that game’s kind of a mess in more places than it’s not so I respect the vibe.

you know what, i'll say it, Shadow SHOULD use a gun! or well... he should have a weapon.
Shadow moves as fast as Sonic by use of his rocket shoes and Chaos Emeralds- aka. HE CHEATS! (and thats a good thing)
Shadow, for all his pride and confidence, is just not as fast as Sonic and i think he should also fall behind in things like bounce, spindash, and even the specifics of his homing attack should be a little more stiff and clumsy (im thinking sonic should smash THROUGH enemies to keep up momentum and shadow should come to a dead stop when he uses his homing attack)
so under these parameters, if he had something like the Buster Cannon from Megaman or a laser pistol or some sort of weird chaos crossbow, that would be really fitting and make his gameplay fundamentally unique from the way Sonic plays while still giving him the basic tools he needs to beat the same levels (speed, jumping, homing attack).

Never played these games in my childhood so I've finished em in my 20s and oh boy it was a nightmare. I genuially think that Heroes is fucking awful with Shadow being a lot more of a fun experience. I just can't stand the fact that this fanbase praise Heroes only because of their nostalgia. It's sad.
I liked Sonic Heroes as a kid, but people like LS Mark and other salty SA2 haters online who prop up Sonic Heroes as the best game and trash on SA2 made me dislike Heroes, hoes just mad because they didn't have a GameCube to play the Adventure games back then, let's face it.
I'm sure there are some people who's reason for defending it is that. I grew up with Heroes on the PS2 completely oblivious to how bad the port was 😅 I was just excited to finally have a 3D Sonic game after playing so much of Mega Collection Plus

I'm probably one of the only people in this world who knew the Chaotix before playing Sonic Heroes, and not because of their debut game, Knuckles' Chaotix.

Everyone seems to complain about having to do westopolis 10 times even tho you dont even have to do the hero or dark mission for it to get to any of the true endings, the option of long range in shadow 05 helped alot with the janky controls and physics that heroes had which had no good long range option so, factual video

I have a work in progress script that’s been on hiatus for awhile due to a myriad of factors including time, life stuff, and a whole host of technical issues, but I‘ve been tinkering with my script again and I’ve scheduled time this weekend to troubleshoot the fuck out of OBS. I think it’s going to be A LOT better than this one, both in content and comedy, and it’s _probably_ going to be at least 3 times longer. I’m actually a bit unhappy with this video when comparing it to my plans for my next one which is a big part of what’s motivated me to work on it again, so, stay tuned probably (although it’s still probably some ways out, I got a full time office job between that video and now and it’s keeping me rather busy)

I absolutely hate how much Heroes gimps the characters and ruins the flow of the gameplay. What really makes Sonic Heroes so much worse is that it was a desperate attempt to widen the appeal of the franchise after Sega became third party. You got your terrible engine change to make it multiplatform, the kiddie aesthetic to attract a younger audience, a few token references to appease the classic fans, ruining the ending of SA2 for popularity points, and a mechanical lobotomy to attract the braindead casuals that the shareholders lust after.

Lowkey you’re right though that line kinda sucked. I actually almost cut it during editing, and I’ve always wished I would have. Easily my least favorite part of the video, but meh, I’m wet behind the ears, sometimes you miss.

Well, Team Chaotix here are much different than they were before. Old Charmy was even said to be sophisticated for his age, and mature. In the words of some person I forget who due to me struggling to hold onto details, they are new characters using old designs. So, in a way, this is their debut, according to, uh, someone who worked at Sega, I think. Again, bad at details, but it's 5 AM and I'm too busy trying to get myself to go to bed to look it up.

I don't want to leave a dislike but I just don't agree. I think this video is well-edited and pretty fun but I just can't give it a like either in good conscience. I like both Heroes and Shadow. I got all A ranks in Heroes and beat super hard mode. I found most missions in Shadow to be pretty fun.
That’s valid, and with no ounce of insincerity, if you (or anyone for that matter) like either game that’s great and I’d never actually want to take that away from anybody. I just enjoy being a jackass on the internet as an outlet. I don’t like the games myself and it’s fun to be over-dramatic about it but like, if they bring someone happiness that’s awesome.
I realize that sentiment inevitably gets very lost in a video of this style, but idk I felt like mentioning it this time because this seemed like a very genuine comment.

My like for heroes has only turned into hate with how boring most of its levels are with a lot of drag because of enemies but Shadow the hedgehog has always been a guilty pleasure especially if I avoid the tedious routes and Im fairly neutral on it despite its big cons. Heroes is suffering but I can still enjoy most of my time on Shadow.
Hey now, Tails is playable in the free Sonic Frontiers DLC that... Makes a lot of the things about the game in general worse than just the base game... But thats besides the point!
A little behind the scenes: the original video actually included a short tangent entirely recorded and edited discussing my excitement for what was at the time the upcoming Frontiers DLC pack. However, I realized at a certain point that the video wouldn't be finished before the DLC's release, and it already felt kind of awkward in the script in the first place, so I scrapped it.

That’s fine but don’t forget that my opinions are objectively correct always and I am never wrong and have never been wrong and never have any flaws in my reasoning. After all, I am a person on the internet with a microphone, a chalkboard, and a rudimentary understanding of DaVinchi Resolve, so any disagreements you may have are simply a skill issue.

I think, and always have thought, that Sonic 06 is more fun than Sonic Heroes.
I'd have to agree that heroes is bloody repetitive with only a flimsy excuse to be so designed, though the rugpull in shadow about the choosing your own ending is just as insulting to the player's time. I'd say they're both mediocre at best for their hammy voice acting, but interchangeable for how bad they are depending on the player's expectations.

9:55 If we're judging how good a Sonic Game is solely on how good the OST is Sonic R beats the competition in a landslide. Small soundtrack, sure, but it is LITERALLY flawless. The gameplay is ass but there is not ONE bad song in the entire Sonic R OST, and I'm so confident in that claim that you ABSOLUTELY can quote me on it, because I listened to the ENTIRE OST in order to know the claim is true. It's just the same 10 songs but with an instrumental, shortened version of instrumental, and a couple bonus remixes, and all of them slap. Heroes has a Good OST, but it has some stinkers, same with every other game in the series. Though if we want a larger number of tracks at consistently good quality then CD is the best because it has a larger OST with a VERY small amount of bad songs... But only the Japanese version. The US Version has a lot of crap songs. Granted the few good songs are typically BETTER than the JPN/PAL OST, but the consistency is.... Borderline non-existent, because entire zones can have some good and some bad in US, while JP/PAL has an ALMOST flawless OST.
Also as someone who's favorite game is Shadow the Hedgehog, I can confirm the game is absolutely dogshit awful. But I love it anyway.
Also fuck Heroes. Terrible game that people only love out of sheer nostalgia blindness... SA2 is the same but at least Sonic and Shadow feel good to play and the Chao Garden exists.

yeah no shadow is worse i would completely take heroes over it as shadow was the start of the dark age(outside parts of sa2 with how many plotholes that game had.) and the control was way worse just showing how bad the speed style was,there was way more actual padding(seriously needing to beat it 10 times is infinitely worse than simply 4 times which is really apologist talk with how bad it is if that's the defense.), how horrible the searching was and was when shadow got ruined outside 06/until recent though actually would love to see the gun's come back but as chaos controls instead of stupid guns showing how desperate sega was getting.
as i loved it the most of ryan drummand's cast(especially how laid-back knuckles was compared to being as filler as big in sa2.) ,liked as it's the only time the health bars made sense ,liked the levels and teams(chaotix was only really bad in the castle stages as people really overreact with them from classic nostalgia.) and was a nice return to the classic style before going into the adventure style as the gameplay while slippery wasn't as bad as shadows and saying "because shadow was more fun to go through when both are bad"(which heroes isn't/if anything sa2 is more closer with its problems.)is a lame excuse as shadow is way worse.

in most ways heroes is just awful, even from the base idea. having to replay every single level 4 times, and those levels being incredibily long with terrible controls and not even fun level design sucks. thats honestly the worst part of heroes for me, its just not even fun. theres no fun platforming and no fun speed, its just a slippery mess
shadow isnt amazing, but its levels are shorter and a lot more variety. yeah you gotta redo the first level a lot but at least its short
plus shadow can be fixed with mods, heroes really cant.

My enjoyment of a game usually greatly depends on the quality of the game's story (especially when it comes to Sonic Games). Case in point, I really dislike Sonic Colors and I really like Sonic 06.

I also haven’t actually heard of Leadhead but I’ll check them out. I don’t really feel I could point to any one person I’m inspired by, especially because I’m still working on figuring out what I want my style to be exactly. Really it’s just the elements of other creators I enjoy mixed with my own ADHD and tendency for infodumping :p Gun to my head, it’s probably some weird amalgamation of The Geek Critique, CJ The X, and a bit of Max0r and early Scott the Woz. I’ll probably be playing around with my style for some time though. But yes I will 100% be making more things. Don’t know when it’ll be, but I have plans for sure.
Also… love the name :3 I have three, Chalk and Dino (they’re lesbians :3c) and a tiny one that my friends (Wumbodorf included) have forcibly named Fortnite, and I have begrudgingly accepted. Fun fact, Chalk can actually be seen in the background of the Sonic Advance video at the 1 minute mark.

Sonic 06 is a real video game. Just very unpolished unfortunately. The ideas were there. The execution was rushed. P0-6 is a love letter to what it could have been.

On a more serious note, as someone who's played both (on ps2) I enjoy Sonic Heroes a lot more than Shadow the Hedgehog. Granted, on ps2, the game runs at two frame per minute, but I feel like the whole game lacks flow. Don't get me wrong Bingo (whatever the hell the next word is) sucks ass, but you can't tell me that shit's worse than Lost Impact. Looking for one enemy that didn't spawn in earlier because you either had to run into a specific area to spawn it, or you had to enter another repetitive room (fuck Lost Impact) can really waste time. I like a good hardy challenge but mix all of these things with bad handling (arguably because of lag) sucks. I feel like at the end of the day, personally at least, Sonic Heroes is the more fun game to replay.
