They help show off the singer's creativity, as well as pointing out that everyone's favorite singers don't sound fantastic by singing a single dry take into the song; there's a huge dimension brought in from harmonies, effects, panning and doubling to help make the sound more powerful or engaging. It takes so many singers forever to realize that there's nothing wrong with using effects; it's not cheating, your favorite singers use them, and if the average guitarist gets a pedalboard, how is this any different?
EXACTLY!! I love doing the production stuff... The best singers in the world had great production. Look at Michael Jackson!! some of the most produced vocals of all time... And some of the most amazing performances still!

I saw this song performed live a few years ago in St. Paul, MN. During the peak of the song "Vicariously Iiiiiiiii.... 7:26" I got goosebumps on my soul, and legit had an out of body experience. I've seen A LOT of great shows. But that was a different level. Music Saves.
Interesting but discouraging fun fact: In the 90's I had one of those insertable cd players for my car, only the wiring was all fucked up. And when it was acting up, It would only play certain tracks of a recording (in example, for the album 3 dolla bill yall, we would only hear the guitar and drums) so we tried this with Aenima and we we're shocked to hear when Maynard Screams "Goodbye" in Eulogy, It was actually spliced in with 2 different takes that faded into one another. In short, He couldn't do that long of a scream, even in the studio.
Haha... I find that Encouraging! Comping/splicing is real and neat that he was able to invoke that emotion and at the same time, he is actually a mere mortal and not simply a god. haha. Means I could do that too !!

The intro "pre-delay" is actually tape print-through as an effect, not a separate trick. Evil Joe talks about it specifically on a podcast relative to The Pot, but mentions they used it in other places on the record as well.
Maynard still has it but he’s not angry and bitter about those things anymore so it’s hard to deliver the business truthfully and make you feel it. If he can’t take you there he’ll step back. Bad news is better than false hope.
Maynard still is one of the best live vocalists. However, he doesnt really sing as gritty as he used to. Just listen to Stinkfist. Also, out of the 4 Tool shows I have been to, he belted out the last "Vicariously I....." only once. He held the mic into the crowd instead. Pretty sure that part is super difficult to pull off live. And hey, he is almost 60 now. Lets just cut him some slack...LOL.

To sound like or close to Maynard I need an engineer to tweek my vocals, add echos, highs, lows, rasp, wide and squeeze, artifacts, reverse 🔄 variously throughout the track.. *take notes 📝
Ive loved tool ever since I was in high school but I have no idea why they scare me at the same time as much as I love them very very mystifying band thanks for covering!
Another way to get that effect at the end is to automate the hold or freeze button that are on some delays. I think for instance Logic Pro has a freeze button on their tape delay.
That's partially why Maynard performs behind the other Tool members. He is one of the instruments but more importantly, he needs that space to get into the Pathos of the song.

@@chrisliepe Rishloo is the absolute SHIT. Tool used to be my favorite band, then Rishloo came along. I have seen them live sooooo many times, I can't even remember every show. A friend's band was opening a show where Rishloo was on the bill back when they were touring for Eidolon (it was around 2008-Eidolon had already been out for awhile) and my friend put me on the guest list. I figured Rishloo was going to just be another shitty metal band as that particular venue tended to get some pretty generic acts, but then they started playing and I was hooked for life. I went to every show they played in Salem, OR since then (as well as a few in Portland and one in Eugene, plus their reunion show they had in Seattle after Living As Ghosts With Buildings As Teeth came out). Not only are they one of the best bands (if not THE best) I have ever heard, both live and recorded, they are really chill dudes.If you have a chance to see them live, do so. Also, if you do a video on them, I recommend "Alchemy Alice". That high pitched screaming part at the end is fucking EPIC. I don't know how he does it, but every time I have seen them live he nailed it perfectly...once he told me he was sick after their set. He must have sold his soul to the devil to have the ability to do that because he pulled it off even when fucking sick!

Actually, when they played their reunion show in Seattle, I thought I was making a long trip coming from Oregon, but I got there and there were people who traveled from Australia and Canada as well as a bunch of other places specifically to see that show. I saw them a few months or so later in Portland and there was someone who came from fucking Russia to see them live. I feel lucky to live in such close-ish proximity. Before the break up/before LAGWBAT came out, they used to come to my town all the fucking time. Post reunion, though, they haven't come here, though. I saw them once in Eugene, and a couple times in Portland, but they haven't played a lot of shows since they got back together. They say they are writing another album, but most, if not all of them, are married, employed, and at least one of them has a kid now and they are focusing less on music so who knows if we'll get another album/more shows? If they announce a show, I highly recommend traveling to see it because it could be the last Rishloo show for all we know. The moral of the story, if you are a musician in an awesome band with a big following DON'T GET MARRIED/HAVE KIDS/WORK A "REAL" JOB because they will kill the music.

That reverb reverse thing you speak of is ghostly. Believe it was used for ghost voices in 13 ghosts or some shit like that. I feel like I hear a similar reverb reverse thing on snare drum track for Def Leppard's photograph. Feel free to correct me if I am wrong. I have never messed with this kind of stuff. @@chrisliepe Rishloo is the absolute SHIT. Tool used to be my favorite band, then Rishloo came along. I have seen them live sooooo many times, I can't even remember every show. A friend's band was opening a show where Rishloo was on the bill back when they were touring for Eidolon (it was around 2008-Eidolon had already been out for awhile) and my friend put me on the guest list. I figured Rishloo was going to just be another shitty metal band as that particular venue tended to get some pretty generic acts, but then they started playing and I was hooked for life. I went to every show they played in Salem, OR since then (as well as a few in Portland and one in Eugene, plus their reunion show they had in Seattle after Living As Ghosts With Buildings As Teeth came out). Not only are they one of the best bands (if not THE best) I have ever heard, both live and recorded, they are really chill dudes.If you have a chance to see them live, do so. Also, if you do a video on them, I recommend "Alchemy Alice". That high pitched screaming part at the end is fucking EPIC. I don't know how he does it, but every time I have seen them live he nailed it perfectly...once he told me he was sick after their set. He must have sold his soul to the devil to have the ability to do that because he pulled it off even when fucking sick!

Actually, when they played their reunion show in Seattle, I thought I was making a long trip coming from Oregon, but I got there and there were people who traveled from Australia and Canada as well as a bunch of other places specifically to see that show. I saw them a few months or so later in Portland and there was someone who came from fucking Russia to see them live.
I feel lucky to live in such close-ish proximity. Before the break up/before LAGWBAT came out, they used to come to my town all the fucking time. Post reunion, though, they haven't come here, though. I saw them once in Eugene, and a couple times in Portland, but they haven't played a lot of shows since they got back together. They say they are writing another album, but most, if not all of them, are married, employed, and at least one of them has a kid now and they are focusing less on music so who knows if we'll get another album/more shows? If they announce a show, I highly recommend traveling to see it because it could be the last Rishloo show for all we know. The moral of the story, if you are a musician in an awesome band with a big following DON'T GET MARRIED/HAVE KIDS/WORK A "REAL" JOB because they will kill the music.
This is exciting. Gotta get home from work before I watch, so 30ish more minutes. I can pretend to be patient for 30 minutes. I pretended to be patient from the release of 10,000 Days until Fear Inoculum, so 30 minutes should be possible.

That reverb reverse thing you speak of is ghostly. Believe it was used for ghost voices in 13 ghosts or some shit like that. I feel like I hear a similar reverb reverse thing on snare drum track for Def Leppard's photograph. Feel free to correct me if I am wrong. I have never messed with this kind of stuff. Pretty cool content,here,sir.👍
