Wouldn't it be boring to you if you were their drumer? I mean, i am Slayer freak, but as a tallent as Dave is, i would need something else, to drive me ALIVE. Simple things, only musicians know.
I got to see him play with fantomas in a little venue, got close enough to literally get his and Mike's sweat on me. One of my favorite concert experiences of all time! Dave is one of the reasons I got into drums!
I had the same experience in 1999, in Portland in this awesome room that used to be The City nightclub, Dave's drum set was on the front corner of a tiny stage with his back to half of the crowd.
It was pretty clear to most fans of slayer who were also musicians that Dave lombardo was much more than just the drummer of slayer , he came up with the band's logo , song names , he even wrote parts of slayer songs on the drums and just hummed the guitar parts that he had in his head to Kerry or Jeff , a large amount of those contributions became slayer classics , when Paul recorded his parts on divine intervention it was audibly clear what songs had already been written by Dave and the ones that Paul wrote sounded entirely different ( as you would expect with him being a different drummer ) around 70% of that album had already been recorded in the form of rough demos , dittohead being one of them , the only slayer song that Paul wrote that has that genuine slayer sound and feel to it was payback , all the other stuff he wrote with slayer sounded ok but not fearsome ,brutal,violent and as on the edge of destruction as songs wrote by Dave sounded , In 2001paul bostoph suddenly announced he was leaving due to medical issues , the management reached out to Dave before even mentioning it to the band , Dave agreed to help them finish the god hates us all tour and he would only join on a temporary basis , the management then told Kerry first then Tom and Jeff were told later that day , at first Jeff and Tom didn't think Dave would be able to play the slayer songs . A rehearsal was arranged , when Dave arrived they all seemed to be happy enough , they played 3 songs , Kerry ,Jeff and Tom decided they would play 3 of their fastest songs , war ensemble ,angel of death and reign in blood were chosen as the first 3 songs , after the first song they actually asked Dave to slow down a touch , they were stunned that he could not only remember all the songs , but he could now play better and faster than he had ever done before , We then got the still reigning tour and two more albums with the original 4 , the way they retired was shameful , repentless the album needed Dave's arrangements and input on the album , having Jeff and Dave not in the band was to much of a loss to the sound and style , if Dave had recorded that record it could have been the perfect ending .
that's what happens when you have a good work ethic and never stop practicing; you keep getting better at your craft. ...unlike a certain other prominent thrash drummer who has slacked off and openly admitted to barely every practicing anymore.
Great to hear a free Lombardo finally express himself. A god of gods in the metal world, he was clearly too talented for Slayer (despite being fundamental to their speed and sound, distinguishing them from others - his fills and licks created continual interest in songs that might otherwise have lacked high level inspiration) and is now finding his way forwards and upwards.
Love seeing all the other comments agreeing how cool it is that he is able to really express himself unlimited with his drumming/percussion/song writing! Much love God bless

A masterpiece from Dave and whoever else he chose to work with on setting up, tuning and on through tracking, mixing and mastering fully delivered, capturing this percussion opus he put together I can only guess was no straightforward task..the live room(s) and control room(s) would be fascinating to see. The selection, tuning and processing throughout is supreme, never mind the masterful playing techniques on display/put to use throughout, truly next-level Lombardo.
My understanding is that he did everything himself in his home studio - The official site has it as "Written, Recorded and Produced by Dave Lombardo" and I vaguely recall him saying in an interview that he was finally able to get out all of his drums at once and just let fly and see what happened. So not only amazing drumming, but he did pretty much everything else too! Though I think he mentioned that his brother (?) also helped with the mixing...
I grew up with his precision and savagery beating into my ears. This was a welcome home. From beauty to chaos to trance-like to the indescribable. This was a pleasure to listen to and I thank Dave.
I bought the Purple Haze vinyl version and it is one the top vinyl recordings I have purchased recently. Very good recording and nice and quiet vinyl. Almost zero surface noise and barely any pops or clicks. Great pressing!

Dave Lombardo's style always spoke to me in a special way. It greatly influenced the way I play and listening to this album is like someone captured all the drum chaos in my head and put it to music. This is amazing.

Still remember getting a drum stick in the corner of my eye at reign in blood tour , center main floor. Didn’t even see it coming , it hit me in the corner of my eye , fell down right in front of me , and EVERYONE around me , all at once , including myself just dropped to the floor to get it , and yup , I got it. Had it for many years then during an unfortmove from an apartment I lost all my concert stuff. All kind of t shirts from every metal band in the 80’s , ticket stubs , etc. But my Dave Lombardo drum stick I still think about it. It even said Dave Lombardo on it.
Bummer...I lost all my concert stuff also in a move hundreds of ticket stubs, T-shirts and some Metallica stuff I got when I landed backstage passes and met them.
I got hit on the top of the head by a stick thrown by Charlie Benante of Anthrax in '89 when they were opening for KISS, it left a goose egg on my skull for a week, I didn't even get the stick. I got a Louie Clemente stick when he played with Testament during the Clash of the Titans show in Vancouver in 1990 with Slayer, Megadeth and Alice In Chains. Yeah, AIC got booed for most of their set, it was supposed to be Suicidal Tendencies but they had some legal issue with coming to Canada so AIC replaced them for the Canada shows.
@@ll7868I bet those who booed AIC feel like yards now. I seen some of that footage and read some comments saying same thing. I was metal but loved AIC , Seen the Dirt tour in Chicago.

They didn't even ask about payment until they were at the venue and probably would have done it for free just for the exposure although they got a standard fee on a per show basis and a % of the ticket sales for their roughly 40 minute set, not sure how much in total but it probably bought them all a brand new Ferrari or Lambo, I'm sure a few boos didn't bother them.

I saw him play in a tiny little dump of a club in stoke on trent england called the sugar mill , he was with grip inc , i was a massive dave lombardo fan while he was in slayer the first time round, when they betrayed him in 92 i think i refused to buy an slayer without dave performing on it , now back in the day there was no internet to speak of so i didnt know about grip inc , it was pure luck that lead me there that night , when i walked in ( i was very early) i saw this massive tama art star kit set up and a cover placed over it , then the support bands stuff was set up , i said to my mate how tge guy who owns that double bass kit must be a massive dave fan because it was near identical to what id seen dave play on in the clash of the titans tour in the uk ( megadeth,slayer,anthrax and alice in chains?) ,i go outside to go and get some food and im faced with my hero getting off a coach and saying hi guys how are you ? , i was in utter shock ,i couldnt speak , i just nodded my head and carried on walking , later that day i spoke to dave for about 15 mins , talking about his set up , being 5 ft away from dave while hes in the trash metal zone was a moment in my life i will never ever forget , hes the reason we have amazing crazy fast double bass drums in metal , he changed the way metal drummers played.

Reign in Blood in 1987 when I was 10 years old and have been listening to extreme music ever since. Thanks for leading by example and proving that age is just a number. It's a shame many others your age especially from the big 4 do not have a mind as broad as yours when it comes to music. You're no.1 out of that lot when it comes to experimenting and showing up many many others out there including the kids. Reign in Lombardo ! :) 🤘

Nice experimental album. Reminds me of some works by Mr. Bungle, Terry Bozzio, Frank Zappa Mothers Of Invention avant-garde songs, or Stewart Copeland you can notice that Lombardo wanted to experiment and push his own boundaries as a drummer, for my that's cool. This record has a dark soundtrack vibe.
Definitely amazing! Dave is such an incredible drummer. He's been one of my most favorite Metal drummers for the past 40 years now. but like someone else had said in the comments on here. if Mike Patton's unique vocals had be on this album it could have been something even more unique than it already is. Congratulations to Dave for finally making this happen.🤘
Love the reverb and delay effects. He and Tim Alexander and Danny Carey could do an awesome tour . This is next level Planet Drum Mickey Heart stuff love it.
Myself not even being hardcore Slayer or metal fan, still know of this band, and seeing title remembered name and knew I have to listen this. Quite interesting! It's easy to bang out same sound for decades but going out to reach new horizons is next level.

(It's unlike any other album I've ever heard, which is what more albums should be like instead of copycatting the past.)

Impossible as it would seem, his best work may still be in front of him.
Lots of older Metal musicians are going avant-garde & it's very, very cool.

I was fortunate to be blessed with. Reign in Blood in 1987 when I was 10 years old and have been listening to extreme music ever since.
Thanks for leading by example and proving that age is just a number. It's a shame many others your age especially from the big 4 do not have a mind as broad as yours when it comes to music.
You're no.1 out of that lot when it comes to experimenting and showing up many many others out there including the kids.

Nice experimental album. Reminds me of some works by Mr. Bungle, Terry Bozzio, Frank Zappa Mothers Of Invention avant-garde songs, or Stewart Copeland you can notice that Lombardo wanted to experiment and push his own boundaries as a drummer, for my that's cool. This record has a dark soundtrack vibe.
Definitely amazing! Dave is such an incredible drummer. He's been one of my most favorite Metal drummers for the past 40 years now.
but like someone else had said in the comments on here. if Mike Patton's unique vocals had be on this album it could have been something even more unique than it already is. Congratulations to Dave for finally making this happen.🤘

Love the reverb and delay effects. He and Tim Alexander and Danny Carey could do an awesome tour . This is next level Planet Drum Mickey Heart stuff love it.
Myself not even being hardcore Slayer or metal fan, still know of this band, and seeing title remembered name and knew I have to listen this. Quite interesting! It's easy to bang out same sound for decades but going out to reach new horizons is next level.
