For everyone who came to this video and was frustrated that rather than wanting the second page to have a two and then the third to start at one, you wanted the document to start page 1 labeled on page 3, and have no numbers on the first two pages, here is how to do it. 1. Follow this tutorial EXACTLY until 3:06. (For inserting the page break, do as he says and place your cursor under all content on page 2 and insert from there. The page break blue line should appear right under the content of page 2.) 2. After he mentions that now page 2 has a two and then the numbers have restarted at 1 on the third page, stop the video. 3. At this point, you should have a document with page 1 that does not have a page number, page 2 with a 2, and page 3 beginning with 1. 4. Now go to page 2 that has a 2, and highlight the 2 within the header. Change the color to white. This makes the 2 vanish. 5. You now have a document with the first two pages having no numbers, and page 3 beginning with 1. Let me know if this makes sense or needs clarification:)
For anyone still having trouble the "Section Break (Continuous)" does not work as stated in the video, you MUST use the "Section Break (Next Page)". This video is the only one that I could find that actually explains how to number pages properly.
OMG thank you so much for this! I am making a cookbook for a friend, and I didn't want the book covers to have page numbers. Thank you for this tutorial!
I have to publicly thank you for this. Needing to insert Roman numerals separately from the body of my dissertation was a nightmare. Your suggestion however worked and I am so grateful! God bless you for sharing. :). Chromebooks have honestly been quite a pain moving from Microsoft. But with awesome people like you the journey is made easier.
I suggest people should be patient with this video. I watched it once and I thought I can do it but I wasted lots of time. DO IT STEP BY STEP with this guy and don't make the mistake that I made.
Thank you for another very useful video. You did a great job demonstrating this and it looks to me like it's actually simpler and more straight-forward than the method used in Excel. It's going to be interesting to see if Excel honors the numbering that's been set up in a Google Doc (will check later on the work machine that's currently collecting dust). If so, I may start using a Google Doc as my starter document whenever I need an intricate page-numbering system.
Tried doing that but Google Docs still decided to put numbers on pages I didn't want it to. I wish there were an easier solution than this automated confusion.
Hey, so I've been trying to do this, but I've been having a problem: I click section break, try to get the page numbers on page 7, and it does it, it labels page 7 "1," page 8 "2," and so on. Yet, it labels pages 1-6 with numbers too, and whenever I try to delete the previous page numbers, it makes thenoage numbers go away for ALL the pages, even the ones I want to label. What do I do?
Exact same problem. Super frustrated. It's not only numbering the main body of my document (correctly) but numbering the titles page, abstract, contents, etc. which aren't supposed to have page number. When I delete those all the numbers in the body are deleted, too.
I don't have the Show section breaks at View. How should I proceed with paging section 2 of my 30-page work? I am using the Romans number for the first 10 pages. Then, I am using the normal numbers for Chapters 1-6.
@@ProlificOaktree You can actually! With your brilliant section break ideas and idea from another video, I was able to break the first 4 pages of my dissertation (one page at a time) and use the insert special character to insert Roman numerals. After doing that, I was able to have regular numbering for the rest of my project. ***I think typing in the Roman numbers (manually) after making each section can also work***
@@ProlificOaktree Thank you for your reply. I've even tried to import a Microsoft Word Document with some pages being landscape and the rest portrait, but it still doesn't work. It would be great if there was a way.

this is helpful, but unfortunately the functionality is super inconsistent. When applying to 'this section only', it behaves the same as 'this section foward', meaning that the sections after* the one you want are also numbered. And you can't delete those, because then all of them are deleted. Why this is a problem in 2021 I have no idea. Thanks for being a part of the dialogue :)
Is google docs provide the roman numbers on page numbering system, i cant found anything about it also i think google doesnt support the special characters on page numbering
@@zz7733 Could you put a page break at the bottom of the 3rd page so page 4 and later are designated as 'section 2' and then select section 2 in the 'Apply to' of the page numbers menu and choose and which number you wish to start from in the numbering section of the options menu (after unchecking 'link to previous' tickbox found in the header/footer)?
Thank you for this. I managed to follow until the end but when i tried to remove my number on my pretend citation page it removed all number up to the original section 2. What am I doing wrong?
