  • It is estimated that about 20,000 people were attending the Jerry Garcia Memorial at the Golden Gate Park Polo Field, San Francisco CA, Sunday August 13, 1995.
    CEREMONY speakers in order:
    Babatunde Olatunji, Deborah Koons Garcia, Annabelle Garcia, Wavy Gravy (shown in this video), Bob Weir, Steve Parish, Mickey Hart, Phil Lesh, Bill Kreutzman, Paul Kantner, Vince Welnick and John Perry Barlow.
    Except for the parade and drumming there was no live music. The song in this video is Playing In The Band (Edmundson Pavillion Seattle, WA 5/21/74). The images are an excerpt of a video given to to me by english Dead Head "Dangerous Dave", a few weeks after the ceremony. Unfortunately the source is unknown and the VHS-tape has lost a lot of its quality during the years. Hope you'll enjoy it anyway...

    Grateful to see this video and know that someone had the technology on hand at that time to record it. I saw almost every show from west to east coast then back through the Midwest and final show in Chicago. I lived near Chicago at the time. Went home for just a few weeks then received the news that Jerry had left his body. By the eve of 8/9 we were on the road driving back to The City (SF) to attend this event. Thank you Jerry for all you gave and continue to give each of us…. Forever Grateful!

    I was lucky enough to have lived in SF for the last 5 years before Jerrys passing. I was there for this wonderful tribute and with the amps stacked so high in the park and the sound quality and all of the beautiful people, I knew I was at what I considered to be the last Grateful Dead concert. Thank you so much for psoting this.

    This happened on birthday. I heard the news at 10 am. I was living in Humboldt County attending to my crops all day . I went home had a dinner of canned soup and started crying.

    I was in attendance that day, and the night before. It is the seminole event that all others come before or after. Travelled from Little Rock to SF in two days straight. I think about JG everyday. He was my spiritual father, and my warden. Thank you for this video. Feels like yesterday. NFA!

    Very cool video! Thank you so much for this. I especially love the "Playin' " soundtrack. On 8/9/'95 the Deadheads lost a big piece of their collective hearts! 😢

    I say gravy did a fine job! Hunter, the author, was to his left (right as a viewer). He appeared to frequently nod in agreement as gravy performed the important lyric, just this one time... thank you for posting!

    I’ve heard Hunter read this.
    In fact, I thought Robert read the poem at this memorial. What public reading am I thinking of?
    Anyway, I suggest listening to Hunter’s reading. Less theatrical but so well pitched to the tones and rhythm of the poem.

    Beautiful crowd video. Awesome Seattle Playin. Sorry to roll off below but for the love of God what he did for all beings- what Hunter has done for all beings- you'd think after all those years They'd get a feel for who the Grateful dead is. She's a living breathing entity. She goes by the name muse. These guys act like its some far out thing- and it is but to us it was real life and wow- Garcia gave everything to liberate beings and wavy Gravy can't even read. Amazing. Fucking amazing.

    It's "Eulogy," not "Euligy."

    • @nedrobinson7490
      @nedrobinson7490 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It’s actually “elEgy”, not “eulogy”; there’s an E, not an O, in the middle.
      el·e·gy
      noun
      1. a poem of serious reflection, typically a lament for the dead.

    • @jazzmanchgo
      @jazzmanchgo 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@nedrobinson7490 Euology (n.) noun
      The two words are related, but not precisely synonyms. Eulogy is defined as "A speech or piece of writing that praises someone or something highly, typically someone who has just died." It refers to any speech or writing in praise of a person, but it's especially used for a formalized speech in honor of a deceased person. Elegy refers to a mournful poem or song (not a speech, per se), especially one written for a funeral or a deceased person. Whar Wavy is doing here is basically a poem, which makes it an elegy, but it's also a speech in a way (Golden Gate Park wzas a public event, not a service in a church or a cathedral), so it could be considered a eulogy as well.

    • @nedrobinson7490
      @nedrobinson7490 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@jazzmanchgoI think we agree lol. The title of Hunter’s poem is : “An Elegy for Jerry”, which Wavy was reading aloud to the gathered crowd. So in that sense, yes, the “Elegy for Jerry” became a Eulogy for Jerry; a eulogy in verse rather than prose. ToMAYto, ToMAHto. Somewhat pedantic, what hey, what’re you gonna do? 🤷‍♂️

      @@jazzmanchgo note the quotes that surround what the text was called. Hunter named is that and you can consider it whatever you want but it was far more an elegy than a eulogy.

  • @missyounorm33

    It’s spelled Elegy. Not Eligy. Not Elogy. If you’re going to throw up a clip on Jerry, who by the way was probably the most articulate and learned musicians to have come out of the 60’s then, for fucks sake, buy a dictionary.

    Hello. Gravy, you wouldn't recognize the muse if she walked right up to you and said hello. You read it wrong. Those aren't the words. I take tremendous offense to that. All the better reason to keep Hunter safe. You guys- it's fucking amazing any of you managed to survive a day after he left this world. I was so fucking sure you'd all fall right on your faces- like the Angels do before God. But no- you managed to stand. Somehow, AND FUCK UP THE WORDS. I take tremendous offense. Sorry to just point this out now but just got off suicide watch after 22 years and 7 months.
