Farming Remnants for AI Cores : Starsector

  • It feels so good to eventually figure out how to destroy the remnant fleets. We even managed to do it without having to spend a bunch of story points. I think this is the breaking point for the game. We can now take on the worst the sector has to throw at us. Also our colonies are looking pretty decked out in AI cores. Just one more episode and we should be finished up here.
    *Edit : should really have mentioned that LP brawlers have Accelerated Ammo Feeder, hell of a DPS increase.

    I setup in a nexus area before. It was a struggle to keep my colonies defenses up high enough to keep the trading ships from being destroyed by the remnant fleets as the remnant gets stronger in the system the more you defeat so was a constant powerplay struggle.
    When I was able to maintain good defense though it was very profitable. Come back every so often to salvage from the wrecks and get plenty of AI cores mostly around my colonies too as the battlestations played a big role in defeating the bigger fleets.
    That all stopped though when a lone trade convoy decided to assault the nexus. I don't know why, I don't know how. But a trade convoy defeated the nexus. Out of all the fleets that could've attacked the nexus it was a trading fleet that decided to and won.

    I was trying to get this brawler strat to work, I almost gave up, they just seemed to be too cautious to be effective, they needed to push quickly to combat the remnant's ships, especially the way you demonstrate. Then I figured it out, what I was doing was setting the "full assault" toggle and positioning my paragon, what I didn't realize is giving ANY other commands turns off full assault mode. I think the AI gets in close enough to hit with all it's guns on full assault. It's like magic, makes a huge difference, once I realized that, it worked exactly like you showed. Otherwise the brawlers bounce around trying to find a "reasonable" opening to fire instead of piling in Kamikaze style. Very interesting quirk with the AI, I don't think this method would work unless you can make them all very aggressive.

    • @FrancisJohnYT

      Exactly, the full assault is the special sauce, turns all the brawlers into reckless pilots and gives the enemy no chance to back off and vent flux.

    Hey brother thank you for all your tutorials on starsector they have been a god send!
    I refined your strat by adding 3 Monitor's with no guns (the have 2 built in and are cheap to deploy) so the idea is deploy Paragon + Monitor's for distance than deploy Brawlers, what happens is by the time the Brawlers arrive the Monitors are in the middle of everything getting hit from all sides (they just dont care or die) the Paragon is getting up nice and close so the brawlers just fly in with most enemies having their rear to them. (harden sub systems/shields, front shield and solar shield for Monitors)
    I swapped the hyper velocity drivers for heavy needeler's to great effect, also if you swap out the high intense lasers for the gravton beams at the front and where the gravton beams were put tactical lasers your weapon/flux per sec will drop to 2308 that's around 40% less flux generation which is huge ;)

    Aggressive brawlers also make really good escorts for cracking defensive lines because they can blow up missiles with the guns they usually carry and if something aggressive tries to push you when you back to vent there's 2-3 brawlers jumping on their ass and probably overloading them if they aren't careful

    From my experience 6 eradicators with a similar design to yours can take on one drone battleship with escorts, so maybe eradicators and gunboats to deal with escorts quickly?
    The droneship is good against a single target that melts quickly, so many encircling it and working through its shields and fragile armor seems to be enough.
    also maybe trying to capture drone ships with that perk will work too.

    • @alexmiller3349

      Larger fleet size simply favours the player immensely. Same with increasing the deployment point values (even though they're an option in the game options by default). I like using swarms of ships too. Try out using the Tempest instead of the Brawlers. Yes they require double the points to enter (8 vs 4) and are more difficult to get in the beginning, but without safety overrides are still faster than a brawler, and I have tested repeatedly with them and they can 1v2 Brawlers and Auditors, or any mix of 2 frigates that I have found, OR almost any destroyer, etc..
    The setup I use is simple: Tempest with double lance, empty missile slot as their drones can and do suicide as a guided missile, shield stabilizers and advanced optics to give them that advantage in shooting at a distance. Mix that with their speed and they just wreck just about everything.

      @@FrancisJohnYT Tach lances for large slots, pulse lances for mediums, you can do a massive pulse hit that way, perhaps? It's risky without having a decent flux pool, and if you get flux'd up, you get screwed up more, if you have everything linked together, but if they're *hard* flux'd up, then you can actually just outright penetrate their shields with tach lances.
      If they didn't have abysmal range base (400), I'd even say Antimatter Blasters for the smalls; tac lasers are just the superior small slot for cap ships; an array of those can obliterate things that get in range, but they're not meant for a Paragon, frankly.
      If Gravitons actually did more than an abysmal 100 DPS, I'd be happier to recommend them more for medium slots, but with AI ships typically having few mods and everything stuffed into vents and caps, it just isn't worth it on its own. If it gave hard flux natively, then I'd be 100% for it, but as is I just cannot recommend it *for this cap ship*.
      The setup you have now is a pretty great disco suppression setup, in general, but I'd swap in Ion Beams for an all-beam setup over Gravitons, since they can arc through shields more as more *hard* flux is built up and start shutting down systems; either way, make sure you use the Advanced Optics mod for beam weapon-focused ships, since it gives an extra 200 su range, and that stacks with the Integrated Targeting Unit.

      I can't figured out what they are trying to do with beams, all the skills and mods to boost damage reduce your range. Yet all beam ships tend to be glass cannons that can't survive close combat. Which leads me to believe they are only good on player controlled phase ships. Outside of that they are mostly beaten out by the ballistic weapons when it comes to AI control. Well except for the High Intensity Laser, that thing is quality.

    • @ahmataevo
      @ahmataevo 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FrancisJohnYT - I think that was their way to balance beams for being near insta-hit, guaranteed focus weapons where fast ships can dodge other types. If you can apply hard flux with other weapons, then twin tac lance / twin ion beam will keep an enemy ship disabled even through their shields, so they are situational that way. Paragon can overpower most things with 4 tac lances and 2 HVD's, with tactical venting for flux control. Overall, usage for lasers seems highly situational, specific to a role, and other weapons are generally better for straight up combat.

So their DPS is way higher than it appears by the numbers. You may want to try replacing the Heavy Machine Gun with a Thumper. Most of the game is well designed but I feel like the 30 fleet limit is super arbitrary. It should be based on something like fleet composition. Something where a capital ship or other logistic type ships would facilitate a larger fleet size. It could be balanced in a way that for most practical applications it ends up around 30 but still. Something more fluid than hard.

    • @Izithel
      @Izithel 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's very easy to change the max size in the Settings.json file if you want to, I believe the dev was thinking of something more like what you have with fuel and supplies where you can carry more but at a heavy penalty, tough I think that was at least some years ago.
      Having put the limit up in my games I can understand why the cap exists tough, the game's balance goes to strange places quickly where early on the absolute death stacks will make it impossible for the player, but later on the increased fleet size allow one to absolutely cheese the AI in ways it can't handle...
      Also it turns fights into long slogs if you don't also increase the battle size limit as you'll be camping the enemy side of the field waiting for their reinforcements to trickle in, but if you change the battle size limit the AI can't really handle having so many ships in play at once.

    • @FrancisJohnYT
      @FrancisJohnYT  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have not tried any of the other frigates this way, but being able to pressure the enemy with so many ships really hurts their ability to vent. I can see why the fleet limit would help avert that a bit. Though I think fleet class limits may become a thing, like 2 capital, 4 cruiser, 8 destroyers and 16 frigates or something like that. Though I'm not sure I would like that either.

    One way they can "fix" this (but why, it's so much F.U.N.!) is limit how much ammo you can take on all of this ballistic weapons, or just make them not so flux-efficient on smaller ships

    • @KainYusanagi
      @KainYusanagi 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ballistics is flux-efficient because it's physical ammunition, rather than energy weapons. No matter how many bullets you fire, it's barely going to be a blip compared to the flux (heat) generated by creating a bolt of plasma within a stable envelope of energy and then railgunning it at a target, repeatedly. The ammo storage is also pretty minor-to-comparable compared to the energy generation requirements for energy weapons; weapons without ammo are basically stating that they have effectively unlimited storage for the rounds in use for a combat situation, and can likely fabricate them easily enough on-site, as well (similar to how limited ammo missiles regenerate between combats).

    • @rogo7330
      @rogo7330 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@KainYusanagi so, basically energy weapons sucks with one or two exeptions? I still can't figure out how to build Wolf frigate properly on start. Whatever I tried it so flux inefficient and doing so little damage comparing to everything else. Maybe I should look to EMP damage...

    • @KainYusanagi
      @KainYusanagi 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@rogo7330 No, they don't suck except for a couple exceptions. Energy weapons typically have much longer ranges, secondary effects, and equal damage to all forms of defense. Its one big weakness is that most energy weaponry doesn't do hard flux damage, so either needs something to assist, like missiles, or needs a very high volume to over-flux their defensive capability.
      Furthermore, there's a relatively wide array of weapons available that each have their own niches. The Wolf can actually be built to become a true terror for other frigates and cruisers and potentially even capitals by giving it antimatter blasters and going in for an alpha strike then phase skipping out of range.
      Alternatively it can go for IR lasers and provide some much-needed hard flux buildup, though with lower damage potential (this is more a support setup). You can also give it a Graviton/Ion Beam and 3 Tactical Lasers and let it be a long-range beam platform that can easily get out of trouble if it gets too close. You can also substitute a Phase Lance for the Graviton or Ion Beam and use it for "jousting" in and out of close-range, doing significant burst damage (this works best when player-piloted, not so much AI).
      If you slap on two Sabot SRMs you can overload a lot of smaller vessels' shields with those, or generate a lot of hard flux for a larger vessel. If you toss on two Reapers instead (which are fairly cheap and plentiful), you have a support boat that can unload a torpedo-based alpha strike into an over-fluxed opponent for massive damage once a fight.
      There's a whole bunch of possibilities; Wolves are actually quite versatile depending on the role you want for them. Just keep in mind that like all High Tech ships, they are relatively fragile, and as a Frigate, it just doesn't have the flux capacity or OP capacity to be able to sit and slug it out.
