Starsector Ep1 Black market trading for fun and profit

  • It's all about the money in Starsector. It reminds me a lot of X3, Freelancer and Escape Velocity with a sprinkling of Master of Orion 2 thrown in. We are not here to do some small low level fights, we are here to build an empire. The life blood of any empire is money so first we get the money, then we get the power, then we.... well we are most likely going to end up destroying a lot of real estate. It's just that once you have built an empire what else is there left to do?

    Great to see the new series. The Eradicator is (IMO) THE best mid game ship. It can outgun anything small, and with a base speed of a destroyer it can skirmish with anything big. PS you can turn off the "white screen on ship destruction".

    • @HelmutKohlrabi
      @HelmutKohlrabi 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The pirate Eradicator has the advantage of the burn drive to catch up quickly in pursuits and when picking small fries and much lower DP cost, it's 17 vs 21. The standard Eradicator is a really good stand-off ship with fast firing HVD / Mauler / Light AC (or Railgun). I prefer running the standard with 3 Heavy Maulers 3 Railguns + Rangefinder + ITU, 4 Vulcans, 5 Swarmers / Harpoons / Sabots / Hammers + EMR and SC - Front. Heavy Armor later on when you want to tank capitals. You need to build in 2-3 hull mods though.
      Probably the most useful ship in the game right now for early and late game and one I don't run with SO.

    I'm just going to throw this in here, if you have a course set for a planet or other object, and have to click to avoid something, or get out of a jet stream, you can press the "a" key to automatically return on a path to your predetermined destination. That way you don't have to continue to jump into the map and set a course every time.

    3:00 Actually, Francis, Tri-Tachyon will also buy drugs legally, and I think Luddic Path might as well?
    8:30-ish Always make sure to compare distance to the nearest warp gate at full power to the amount of time it takes to do a transverse jump to hyperspace, PLUS the extra supplies cost doing so incurs as it damages all your ships a little. No such cost when jumping into a system from hyperspace to a node that would be closed without transverse jump, though!
    10:07 stations don't actually care about what distance you go dark at, only surrounding patrols. If there aren't any, then you can sustained burn right up to them, turn off your transponder, then trade with them.... And even if there ARE patrols, if you can get in fast enough before one aggros onto you, then it doesn't matter (basically the only way to complete the quests that require you to do some black market trading of goods on heavily patrolled core worlds).
    11:00 You can actually see the star's solar profile visually; that's the peaks and ridges surrounding the star's body. Those are your warning lines that you're way too close; sometimes there's something in range of those that is worth diving for, though! Just keep costs in mind. There's a few stars that have even more interesting functions, but they're also rather obvious when you encounter them, so I won't spoil those. ;)
    36:00 You can actually just sit behind the planet and the physical mass will block the rays! Saves you fuel and supplies and time. Additionally, just jumping in to wherever the course auto-flies you to is not always optimal; it prioritizes minimizing fuel costs in hyperspace, but spending just a few seconds to go to a closed node or a planet's mass shadow and jump in directly will save a lot of time and effort flying about in-system.
    47:50 Actually, you're doing great! Your combat setup is a pretty solid one, and Hammerheads are used for their efficiency especially when you slap on the modules that let them have hyper-fast flux reduction and flux capacity (at the cost of vastly reduced combat readiness time), but those ships you chose are like their bigger brothers; that third mount and the overall more efficient design is great.
    49:02 Actually, the Venture is a GREAT cruiser. It's not great in the Core Worlds due to its Civilian-Grade Hull's sensor profile, but out in the depths of uncharted space, it's just fine. It has an intrinsic Surveying Module as well as its rather hefty missile complement with the powerful Fast Missile Racks power. It also comes with a mining pod wing of fighters, which are pretty useless on the offense but are basically free PD laser defense for missiles and enemy fighter-craft (used to be better when the wing was interchangeable with any other wing, but it honestly made them a bit too good), on top of some serious hull and armour values. Sure, it's a bit slow, but with the civ hull burn boost and the mod, you can get it up to the minimum required 10 speed, AFAIR.
    51:15 Actually, it's possible to maintain a positive relationship with (REDACTED)! It involves never getting into fights with them initially, never even letting them interact with you in fact, and accepting a Tri-Tachyon commission; this sets their attitude towards you to 0 instead of -50, so you can then wait for a fleet to fight another fleet, usually a Scavenger or Pirate, and then join the battle on their side, until you get their attitude with you up!

    29:51 - I think the idea is that "scavenge" gets the stuff that's floating _around_ the station (and you can get that without going _into_ the station).
    You can scavenge the same location multiple times, BTW, getting less resources (and risking more losses) each time, not just near stations but also in debris fields.
    I think the idea (from a gameplay point of view) is that if you're stranded in the middle of nowhere you can risk your crew's life to get a bit more fuel.

    • @FrancisJohnYT
      @FrancisJohnYT  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    For the "Custom" variants of ships you can rename them on the ship refit page. The field above the one for the ship name is the variant name. If you put in the variant name there *then* save the variant it will keep the name.
    The hyperspace slipstreams are easier to navigate (cross or ride) if you turn off sustained burn.

    The Apogee is actually a very good ship of its size. It only costs 18 deployment points, it has two large slots(missile and energy), not to mention it also has some helpful built-in ship mods for free. Get your Apogee a Locust or Hurricane missile and a flux efficient large energy weapon, it will prove its worth in combat. And don't forget to add a stabilized shield mod on your Apogee, it frees up 210 flux from the shield.

  • @harriel001
    @harriel001 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    When engaging in a Pursuit combat the aggressor has the option of deploying frigates and smaller craft on the left and right sides of the field and Cruisers and larger will come in from the bottom. This allows the aggressor to box in their prey and prevent their smaller ships from escaping untouched. This only happens when a fleet tries and fails to disengage from a fight, so if your being attacked and they have a lot of smaller, faster ships it's best to give your weaker ships a rally point to go to instead of just letting them run off the top of the field if you fail to disengage them. In most cases it's just a better option to Prepare to Engage than it is to Attempt to Disengage so you get as much control over what's on the field and where it's going as you can. It's also the main reason to bring at least a handful of Frigates with you so when you're chasing someone you can box them in. If you do pursue a fleet that's trying to disengage you can click on your frigates multiple times to decide where they deploy, with the main force or the left/right side of the field.
    As others have pointed out the Venture cruiser is actually a really good cruiser to use for exploration, it's basically the low tech version of the Apogee with it's built in survey equipment, large cargo and fuel capacity, and decent hardpoint loadout. Its major down sides are that it's a Civilian ship and it has a relatively large crew and maintenance requirement. There's a mod that can lower crew and maintenance requirements that is basically a must have if you're going to use a Venture for the long term.
    I'm not sure when you last played the game, but you may not know about making mods 'built in'. It lets you permanently install a mod in a ship and you no longer have to pay the installation costs for them. You can only build in a limited number of them on each ship and the process is basically free from what I remember, but the mod can't be removed afterwards so you have to be sure you're going to want to keep it. It's usually best to use it on the mods with the greatest installation costs, like that Augmented Drive Field mod, because it'll free up the most points for you to install other stuff :)

    • @FrancisJohnYT
      @FrancisJohnYT  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'll have to make sure not to get caught again or just to fight them straight up, that was really annoying and if the ships had of been lost we would have been in trouble.
      I missed out on the Venture cruiser, taking a good look at it I can see why it would make a good exploration ship. I was only considering it in terms of fighting which was a mistake. Though with those fast missile racks I can see it making a big mess if you use it right.
      I know about building in mods, but it costs story points to build them in and I don't want to use all of those just yet. Will wait until after I get the captains levelled up.

    A few things to note when traversing hyperspace, assuming no interaction with storms or hyperspace tunnels you will always consume the same amount of fuel. Fuel is per lightyear per day, and with practice you can surf the lightning to cut down on fuel cost. It will increase the cost in terms of supplies, but personally I usually take around 500-1k supplies depending on fleet use per day for basic upkeep and end up needing more fuel long before I need more supplies.
    Holding down s when traversing storms will slow you down so they don't hit you, which saves supplies at the cost of not saving fuel.
    Emergency burn will let you cross the hyperspace tunnels, and even the pulsar beam, handy for not getting thrown back away from your goal planet. I don't quite understand since it doesn't make me go much faster, but it has more force to somehow ignore the space weather.
    I've been playing this fairly consistently since you did the tutorial series, and have been playing a heavily modded game this time. Nexerelin is nice for making the sector feel alive, plus you can use random worlds to make your start less stable and easy. If you don't want the invasions or risk losing factions there is a way to turn it off. Personally I like adding the Luddic Enhancement, because then the Path can bring cleansing atomic fire to an AI fight. Nothing quite like noticing a funny looking fuel ship that has suddenly stopped in front of you, then having to destroy them before they blow up in your face. Frigate size fuel ships can threaten capitals if they manage to get close. It also makes dealing with the Path bases a lot more dangerous, since they can have plenty of protective bomb ships to defend their base.
    Oh, and if you go full wolfpack tactics you can do a LOT of damage with frigates and destroyers. The big scary Guardian drones? Easy pickings for around half a dozen frigates with appropriate officers, I had two monitors playing tank and they could handle the opening salvo of most capitals. Scary, scary frigates.

      The maneuver controls are fairly simple, as long as you hold Shift all combat to make your ship point towards your cursor. At that point, WASD is the expected forward/back/strafe combination.
      Sure, you can get fancy with some of the ships (I'm a Doom fanboy, which is a phase cruiser you kit out with SURPRISE BUTT****ERY weapons with a remote minelaying system that trolls the heck out of AI ships), and some ships (Conquest Battlecruiser) are just a hard no for player control, but you don't have to get crazy like that.

    No low maintenance mod, that's what I call bad luck. They not only decrease the maintenance but also the minimal crew requirement.
    As for colonies, I find the best places are two or three "moons" surrounding a gas giant, preferably one habitable. Close together for overlapping defense fleets, the gas-giant serves as a nice gravity well to jump into and is a reliable source for volatiles. Also check the Duzahk system right in the center of known space. It is unclaimed and sometimes has actual decent planets for centralized operations.
    Finally don't call the Apogee "weak sauce", it is an awesome ship, not the strongest in battle but a decent allrounder, perfect for exploration and can also serve as a backup freighter with the expanded cargo mod

    • @FrancisJohnYT
      @FrancisJohnYT  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Apogee has a place but I can't seem to make it into a proper fighter, it's DPS is just a bit to low for me. Though I recent tried sticking a squall missile on it and that worked a treat.

But in that case, losing the Atlas is really the smallest of your issues. That's why I always spend story points on my Atlases. Her 65 OP can buy a lot of useful equipment. Plus it is a great role playing element to have the nicest cargo ships in the entire Sector :- )

It actually has a modicum of armor, unlike basically any other phase ship (it's still paper thin by regular ship standards, but it won't die to a ship its class that easily), and the mines are just so good for shutting down engines and letting the rest of your ships engage when they can't properly get firing arcs on them, or stop shield overloads by retreating and venting, etc. even still. Makes it so you can basically just shove in useful mods, instead of weapons, for the most part.
