  • In today's SUV-dominated automotive landscape, two-door coupes and convertibles have become increasingly rare, especially among premium German automakers. However, Mercedes-Benz is bucking the trend with the introduction of the 2024 Mercedes-Benz CLE, a midsize coupe that combines the best elements of the brand's previous C- and E-Class two-door models.
While SUVs have taken the spotlight, German automakers continue to cater to niche markets with sleek and stylish body styles. Mercedes-Benz, in particular, has expressed its commitment to becoming a dedicated luxury car company, focusing on providing vehicles that emphasize style, expression, and fun rather than practicality-a true luxury in today's world.
The decision to consolidate the C-Class and E-Class two-doors into a single model is not entirely new. In 1997, Mercedes-Benz replaced the E-Class two-door models with the CLK-class, which utilized the lighter and smaller chassis of the C-Class, offering a more affordable alternative. Now, as coupes face declining demand, Mercedes-Benz is returning to this practice with the introduction of the CLE.
The 2024 Mercedes-Benz CLE is expected to replicate the success of the previous CLK formula for a new generation. While details about the convertible version and high-performance AMG variants are yet to be unveiled, the CLE coupe itself showcases a harmonious blend of the C- and E-Class designs, exuding elegance and style.
Despite replacing the outgoing C-Class two-doors and their E-Class equivalents, the CLE does not simply fall between the two models. It rides on the modular "MRA II" platform architecture shared with the recently redesigned C-, E-, and S-Class, offering shared traits and improved dimensions. With a length of 191 inches and a wheelbase of 114.1 inches, the CLE Coupe is slightly longer than the previous E-Class Coupe and significantly larger than the old C-Class Coupe, providing more room for occupants. Rear knee room increases by 2.8 inches compared to its C-Class predecessor, and the trunk space gains 2.1 cubic feet compared to the old E-Class Coupe.
The new CLE makes accessing the rear seats easier, a feature often overlooked in coupes. Inspired by BMW's spacious 4 and 8 Series coupes, Mercedes-Benz has included an easy-entry switch, activated by a Nappa leather loop on the top rear edge of the front seats, facilitating rear-seat access. Additionally, the cabin boasts modern features such as a 12.3-inch digital driver display, an 11.9-inch central infotainment screen running the latest MBUX software, exclusive front seats with integrated speakers in the headrests, and ambient lighting with 64 color options.
While the traditional hardtop roof found in E-Class coupes will no longer be present in the CLE, the coupe's design remains stunning. Adhering to Mercedes-Benz's "Sensual Purity" design language, the CLE embodies both elegance and modernity. Its appearance aligns with the brand's lineup, complementing other Mercedes-Benz models such as the Mercedes-AMG SL and CLA while boasting a unique and fresh aesthetic compared to BMW's counterparts.
Although specific engine details are yet to be released, Mercedes-Benz confirmed that the CLE will offer 2.0-liter four- or 3.0-liter six-cylinder powertrains, all equipped with 48V mild-hybrid assist systems. The base engine is expected to be a 255-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder, while an optional 375-hp 3.0-liter inline-six will likely be available. Both versions will likely feature a nine-speed automatic transmission and optional 4Matic all-wheel drive.
Mercedes-Benz will include standard safety features such as automatic emergency braking, a driver attention monitor, and active brake assist, with the full suite of Level 2 driving assistance features offered as optional extras.
The 2024 Mercedes-Benz CLE Coupe is set to arrive in dealer showrooms in the fall, with the Cabriolet variant following in the spring of 2024. While pricing details have not been announced, the CLE is expected to fall closer to the previous-generation E-Class Coupe in terms of pricing, offering a larger and more luxurious package. A starting price above $60,000 is likely, with the six-cylinder models estimated to exceed $70,000.
