      Love your videos, Indonesia doesn't really do pretty cities in fact they are quite hideous but I just love the food of Malaysia and Indonesia, Padang food and Nasi Kandar are both my favorites. Keep travelling

    • @ChasingaPlate
      @ChasingaPlate  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I fear the both of us are hopeless when it comes to Padang food and nasi kandar- it's always terribly embarrassing because our plates are always about 3 times the height of everyone else as we want to try EVERYTHING 😂 We're so happy you are enjoying our content Jeff! Have a great weekend! Cheers, Sheena

      @jacintawong3639 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi no never been to Indonesia so din"t try any Padang style. Let you know, why we don"t go to Indonesia. about 35 to 40 yrs ago In Indonesia are not good to Chinese people because Chinese are so rich and had business, and big houses and drive expensive car. If you look into the history that time a lot of Chinese rich people leave their business and houses and leaf thing behind and run for their life. you see a lot of expensive car left behind at the airport. at that time.This are what we see that time and is in the news too. Even I am not living there but I still don"t trust Indonesia . just like Bali 10 to 20 yrs ago and it the same like Indonesia. take care of yourself .

      I just watched another video of a tourist trying street food in Bali and he complained about the sellers who didn't speak English.. and he didn't even try to use Google translate or anything. I mean, whenever you travel to another country you're bound to meet people who only speak their own language right?

    Wow it's obvious that you guys have your local posse because only locals eat their emping (Gnetum gnemon chips) and jangek (water buffalo crackling) that way 👍 Hope you guys made it to Padang in West Sumatra as well because that's the place you want to go for teh talua (egg tea) and sate Padang (for obvious reasons). And if I'm allowed to be pesky, it should be "soto Medan" because there are so many varieties in Indonesia. Our "soto Banjar" in South Borneo looks nothing like the one you have in the video. We don't use turmeric or coconut milk, so it looks rather plain compared to soto Medan, but trust me, it's really fragrant and delicious!
    Cheers! 🙏

Unfortunately we didn't get to Padang this time- we tend to travel quite slow as we really like to take our time to get to know a place and the food scene rather than rushing. Hope we can get to Padang next time 🙌 Heheheh and yes we did have a local posse- wonderful locals who showed us how to best enjoy Medan's awesome food! I was so thrilled to see some foods leftover from the Indo/dutch history. The Tip Top Lunchroom had me thinking and then you had the croquet! But the moment l saw the Chocoadehagel Pur (chocolate sprinkles) on the pancakes.... yup definitely Dutch (before Thomas mentioned it). My Dad is from the Netherlands post war migrant and he eats those sickly sweet sprinkles (also a candy/aniseed variety) on bread, toast or rusks for breakfast. I never aquired his love of them. Loved that Medan has integrated history into there foods. Well done you to for showcasing that.👍

      @@ChasingaPlate ahh forgot to answer oh noo, I tried to make TST at home right after watching your video and it was deeeeliiiicious. But I had to reduce the sugar too, only a litte to beat the eggyolk and a little condensed milk. But because I always drink tea unsweetened. So it's more a TST-esque not original I guess but mjooommm what a exciting drink! Never guessed that these ingredients match each other in such a perfect way.
      While I told my mother about this other day, she told me that her father/my grandfather used to drink his coffee with beaten sweet eggyolk too. It was very usual back then for people to get nutrition and energy specially for farmer, because it was light and fast in the morning. That surprised me very much, so I tried that too and ohmyy like liquid italian Tiramisu! I'm ready to combine everything with eggyolk now haha :D

    The martabak remind me of some of the *_apam balik_* you two have had in Malaysia. I recall that you described those as crumpets as well. Are they similar in flavor? The pancake part. Really fun day. 👍

    • @ChasingaPlate
      @ChasingaPlate  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes very similar in flavour Tosh and in texture! These ones were the perfect size. When we were in Jakarta our friends took us to a famous martabak stall and the one we ordered fed 5 people- I had one small square of it and I was done- it was INTENSE- I think they put about 200g of margarine on that thing and about half a kilo of cheese and chocolate. It is a super popular dessert/snack in Indonesia but not really our kind of thing!!!! Hope you enjoyed this video mate, thanks for watching and commenting! Cheers, Sheena

    Indonesia street food is very many and varied in each region, but unfortunately they only sell certain items, even though the food in the village / old food is very good, for example cakes, they only sell them in small shops. If you want to know more about Indonesian food you can ask and follow this Instagram account @masak2dengannick, he's an Australian who can cook Indonesian food and his wife Indonesian.
