    Hey guys. Great to see you arriving in Indonesia. Medan looks so vibrant. As always fascinating to see the cooking process, great shots. The Rujak was so interesting to see and so kind that they made some sauce up just for you - never seen anything like this before. As you know we do not eat fish but can definitely appreciate the look of a good dish and the fish looked so succulent, great to see you enjoy it so much. Old school ice cream sandwich - yummy!!!! - and like you say you just don't see stuff like that anymore 🙂

    I felt the brain freeze Thomas. 😆 Food is sometimes more about where you eat than what you eat. I love places like Tip Top, they create and celebrate food memories💕 I make rujak, but now I want one of those big grinding stones in the middle of my kitchen. I have a weekness for noodles and the bihun is right up my street... all those slippery noodles in lush coconut broth -swoon. And that bbq fish looked amazing. I always look forward to your videos.

    • @ChasingaPlate
      @ChasingaPlate  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Totally agree Jennifer! I am a sucker for places like Tip Top- that sense of nostalgia and the celebration of the food culture of a certain era draws me like a bee to a honeypot. We loved finding some of these spots in Indonesia- they were super unique. You make rujak?! I am totally going to give it a go when we're back in NZ in a few weeks time and have access to a kitchen! Hi Thomas and Sheena, great to see your jetsetting video from Japan to Medan. Unlike some other Western travellers you are both respectful of the culture and always open minded to the food and fruits. There are similar travellers such as this couple of travellers, who commit the cardinal sin of putting their chopsticks up their nose and to me that is the pit of bad taste beside the danger posed. It is very disrespectful and when I invite my Aussie friends and if they end up doing that, it will be the last time I will be seen with them. The other disparaging remark was that how can the people eat durian as it is the worst thing one can eat. Like the saying goes, "one man's meat is another man's poison." Whilst you can dislike the durian for its odour, it just taste like custard if you are not familiar with it. But it is known as the king of fruits in the whole Asian region without earning the moniker for no reason. I LOVE IT AND IT IS A TRULY REMARKABLE FRUIT. As they say, the more people dislike it the better for me as it will not drive up the prices. The other tip or advice is why don't you incorporate a bit of a travel into historical sites and places to visit into your food blog. It will add a new dimension into your video. It seems such a waste to enjoy the food without a bit of context in the video.

    • @ChasingaPlate
      @ChasingaPlate  6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Hi Hang Tuah, thanks for watching and we're glad you enjoyed this video! Chopsticks up their nose?! You've got to wonder about the ignorance of some people don't you? Usually travel broadens the mind but unfortunately in some instances ignorance prevails! Ha but you're so right, the fewer people who like durian the better for the rest of us who love it!! We're both huge fans of durian- there's nothing better than sitting on the side of the road in SE Asia cracking into a kampung durian- such a treat! Thanks for your feedback re the videos- we're starting to incorporate a little bit more of the cities we visit but the focus will always be on the food as we see these more as food videos rather than vlogs. We were hoping to do more vlog style videos over on our second channel and in time that will come (there's only one video on there at the moment 😆) we've just been travelling and filming hardcore for the main channel over the past few months but stay tuned! Thanks for taking the time to comment mate! Cheers, Sheena

    Indonesian loves their ground nuts, and chillies. Ubiquitous. It's like their umami of flavours. Most of the Indonesian foods are of unpretentious types with the usage of whatever ingredients available locally. So their foods are pure, cheap and still yummy for any Chasing platers. They loves sweetness. They are made of sweet tooth.

    Popular local food and snacks in Medan are actually a mixture of a lot of Peranakan Chinese, Arabic, Indian and a little bit of European influence as this city has been home to multiracial communities especially settlers from all over Asia for centuries. The only original indigenous food that hasn't got any foreign influence here is Batak food.

    Few Medanese specialties: Medanese Soto (Tumeric Coconut Stew), Lontong Sayur (we Chinese eat it for first day of lunar new year), Bataknese Ikan Arsik and Pork Saksang with Andaliman sauce, Popiah, and if you go to Selat Panjang (Chinese food street), don't forget to buy the Wife's Cake (Lo Pho Pia). Another great video. Oh wow that fish looked absolutely amazing sooooo delicious and so chunky. Mackerel is very popular in Cork with young and old out fishing in mackerel season. Tends to be served quite plainly here but looks unreal covered in spices.And dont get me started on that gorgeous dessert and the slice of ice cream brought back childhood memories complete with brain freeze like Thomas lol. Look forward to next video guys.

      Hi Elaine, thanks for watching and commenting mate! We are huge fans of mackerel- it's such an underrated fish where we come from but we have loved it ever since we started eating it in SE Asia. Do you guys usually just grill it and what do you eat it with? The dessert spot was stuck in a total time-warp- we loved it- I'm such a sucker for old school places like that! So glad you enjoyed the first of our Indonesia series mate! Cheers, Sheena

      hi sheena mackerel here when caught is usually filleted and grilled with salt and pepper and served with lots of new season potatoes lemon and fresh veg or chips with vinegar lol. Smoked mackerel is very popular too peppered or with lemon and lots of dill. Either way its a great fish.

      Hi Tatiana K.-P, thanks for watching and we are so glad you brought this up. Until you did, we didn't even realise, I guess because we didn't stop to translate and think about the translation. We're horrified and it is indeed offensive and racist. At the Tip Top, what kind of meal menu did they offer?

    • @ChasingaPlate
      @ChasingaPlate  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It was as retro as the dessert menu SaRaH Kruch- they had things like "American steak" which was steak on a hotplate with fries, boiled vegetables and topped with a fried egg and slice of spam. And also Indonesian and Chinese-Indonesian dishes. I even saw bitteballen- a hangover from the Dutch days! It was fascinating! Cheers, Sheena

      Chasing a Plate - Thomas & Sheena ......Spam? Really? In a fancy restaurant like that? I’d expect Spam to show up on the menu in Hawaii but not in Indonesia ! I wonder how they were exposed to it!

    • @ChasingaPlate
      @ChasingaPlate  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually now that I think about it, it was probably a slice of beef Spam as they wouldn't have the usual pork Spam as the restaurant was halal- is that a thing? Or maybe it was beef bacon? I was just going by the retro photo in the menu. The Chinese eat a bit of Spam so I wonder if the Chinese community in Medan is where it's come from... I have no idea! 😆

      Me too SaRaH Kruch! I have a bit of a soft spot for Spam. My grandma would occasionally fry up a few slices and we'd have it with white rice, a fried egg and soy sauce 😋 It would be perfect for camping! Totally going to remember that one!

    Love the video! The noodles and the rujak (sp?) were so mouth watering. I like how they used fresh fruit as I typically prefer fresh.

      @ChasingaPlate  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yay- we're so glad! Thanks for watching bandknight 😄 Those dishes were AMAZING. I loved watching the making of the rujak and would never have thought that young banana was a base ingredient to the sauce. The fruit was out of this world- super juicy and fresh. Thanks for taking the time to comment mate. Cheers, Sheena
