    Panavision C - Series will always be the best set of lenses!

    • @InDepthCine
      @InDepthCine  4 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      I always love working with them and checking out the serial numbers. Often they'll be really low (like C50-5 or something) which means it's the 5th 50mm C-Series lens ever made. Would love to know where those lenses have been and what they've seen over the years.

    Helpful as always! A channel like this where the creator actually knows what they're talking about AND states it straightforwardly and without pretense is a breath of fresh air. Keep it up!

    Indie filmmaker who has been doing docs and short docs and the like for 10 years now. Mostly self taught so now that I've got my editing, shooting and other stuff down I'm learning more about lighting, lenses and technique. That being said I feel you have 1 of the best channels on the platform. Now a patron. Keep it up brother.

    Sharegrid's massive cinema lens test is an amazing resource! They test each lens at different focal lengths and stops all running the same camera movements with the same model.

  • @2015898

    This was so much more enjoyable than the standard TH-cam lens review it’s actually insane. It’s as if people forgot lenses are used to make movies not measuring breathing and distortion in boring control tests. Show me movies!

    Cooke has been my fav. The iconic Cooke Look. Columbus 2017 has some great pillow shots. Cooke are identical with their aperture blades making a octagonal bokeh look.

    Would love part 2. As it is really difficult to beginner DP’s to test multiple lenses. It’s a very beneficial to us to at least have a theoretical knowledge of different lenses. We cab shortlist and then test them.

  • @HungNguyen-xf5lq

    For anamorphic, the disproportionate breathing from Panavision lenses is actually intentional and desirable. Essentially, it only breathes in the vertical direction, while the horizontal exhibits close to no breathing. This creates an effect mimicking our eye lids closing down when focusing from far to near. Outside of Panavision, I've only seen this in the Todd AO 55mm T1.3, Xelmus Apollo, and Laowa Proteus surprisingly. Arri Master Anamorphic lenses are the only ones that don't have any breathing at all. The rest I'd categorise as having bad breathing behaviour, but it's all subjective at the end of the day.

    “Color matched across the set“: Shows different shots from a movie that was shot entirely with one focal length.

    • @InDepthCine
      @InDepthCine  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I wondered if anyone would notice that haha.
      But the colour reproduction of the S4s are actually very consistent across the range/different sets. Unlike some older lenses like the Cooke S3 Speed Panchros (which can have certain lenses be way warmer than others depending on which set you get).

    • @ryanbennett2650

      @@InDepthCine I thought the same thing, plus all the various different styles and luts applied to the original footage that change the image in different ways and thought, hey, this is still good information. I wish you could've supplemented this with your own footage mixed in that was shot more neutral to show everyone that hasn't been as lucky as myself to have used all these lenses but the Panavision lenses. Also no mention of the cooke anamorphics?

    @geraintroberts7593 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great Part 1, I really enjoyed it! Part 2 with Arri lenses and EF glass! Perhaps Part 3 with the future of glass, LPL, RF Mount, Sony FE - what will happen beyond PL basically.

    • @jamesmatthew7107
      @jamesmatthew7107 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I highly doubt anything will happen beyond PL or PV mounts as they are completely standardized and in this industry that is paramount for cross compatibility.

    • @geraintroberts7593
      @geraintroberts7593 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jamesmatthew7107 I don’t see PL going away as such, as you say, industry standard. But even with Arri introducing LPL, times are changing. Likewise, if RED goes full in on RF.

    There's definitely not many videos providing an overview and comparison of different cinema glass sets/series, so thank you for this. Have you worked with Tribe7's Blackwing7 primes? Would love to see that or another newer lens series in part 2.
    Edit: It'd be really cool to see a video on the basics of camera tests for a shoot to go along with the cinema lens videos
