"...All we need we can get anywhere". Waits can write the most profound lyrics, yet there are so many that have never heard of him. I'm grateful that I have.
I have also been fortunate. I come the northeast where we were all busy deiefing Dylan. I was drunk in the back of a car and heard " the heart of Saturday night and knew he was singing something that we have felt. Three kings for me are van, tom , and townes
I'm a huge fan of his Letterman interviews and performances, and this song was one hell of a way to go out, no one can capture a mood better than Waits. People throw around the title of "musical genius" much too lightly, but that's exactly what Waits is, a true musical genius. And the best part, is that his fans all feel he's singing to them alone, we all feel that connection and we've never met him, extrodinary really. I'll always be thankful for "discovering" Waits at a College party in 88, Swordfishtrombones, Rain Dogs, and Franks Wild Years, were playing at a dorm party, complete with a smokey bar in the back bathed in a dim blue light, I was God Smacked, never heard anything like it before or since, and he's been with me since that fateful day. To think had I not gone down to that party I might never have met him so to speak. I'm so glad I did, to this day the foundation to my Waits estate are those three albums, and then we go from there.
I’ve taken a couple of one last looks. This song is so incredible. After studying in former West Berlin, I took one last look at all the trains and train tracks of the Hauptbahnhof ( main train station) . I took a couple photos with my Rollei or Pentax 1000 camera. Thank you Tom.
Tom's music always reminds me that there is joy in sadness, and hope in desperation. This song is like leaving your home in the summer to find joy in a new place.
This song reminds me of my home in New Orleans when I took one long last look of it in my rear view mirror when leaving town...memories of Hurricane Katrina.
Very well done. I was very moved when Tom Waits performed this song on one of the last episodes of Late Night with David Letterman, and I have always wanted a proper recording of it, but this is a great video you put together. I am going to use it tonight for a co-worker's retirement party. Thank you.
Let's watch the sun come up in another town Try our luck a little further down Leave the cards on the table Leave the bread on the plate Put your hand on the gearshift Put your foot off the brake And take one last look At the place that you are leaving Take one last look Oh take one last look At the place that you are leaving Take one last look I beg for something that the wind can carry The arrow points the way across the waiting prairie This car looks like it could give us a good run A choice to leave was a good one And take one last look At the place that you are leaving Take one last look Oh take one last look At the place that you are leaving Take one last look Let's look forward to the lights that are new The world is a ribbon of road for you All towns have churches and tire shops They put up speed limit signs and they hire cops I love to see the wind in your hair All we ever need we can get anywhere And take one last look At the place that you are leaving Take one last look Oh take one last look At the place that you are leaving Take one last look Oh take one last look Oh take one last look
It's better then poetry. Or is it than? English is not my mothertongue, but I fully enjoy this song and its lyrics. As Tom always does, and I think its than. Thank you very much Tom Waits, from the bottum of my heart!
I love TOM WAITs music and his approaches to anything.. Bless you TOM.....!
You made me cry again dear Tom......
TOM YOU HIT ME IN THE HEART AGAIN..LOVE YOU❤

Well Said!!
This song really hits home... no pun intended.
Lovely video. I am going to send this with a Thank you” to my colleagues from the last 30 years when I retire next year.
That's so cool! Enjoy your retirement!

all the love and respect in the world to tom waits.

TW ages like fine brandy. Love his cinematic melancholy.
Let's watch the sun come up in another town
Try our luck a little further down
Leave the cards on the table
Leave the bread on the plate
Put your hand on the gearshift
Put your foot off the brake
And take one last look
At the place that you are leaving
Take one last look
Oh take one last look
At the place that you are leaving
Take one last look
I beg for something that the wind can carry
The arrow points the way across the waiting prairie
This car looks like it could give us a good run
A choice to leave was a good one
And take one last look
At the place that you are leaving
Take one last look
Oh take one last look
At the place that you are leaving
Take one last look
Let's look forward to the lights that are new
The world is a ribbon of road for you
All towns have churches and tire shops
They put up speed limit signs and they hire cops
I love to see the wind in your hair
All we ever need we can get anywhere
And take one last look
At the place that you are leaving
Take one last look
Oh take one last look
At the place that you are leaving
Take one last look
Oh take one last look
Oh take one last look
Tom makes magic
“ come down off of the cross . We could use the wood “...

Ruud.........It would be "than"😉
@@wynnssecret8584 I realised immediately after I pressed enter, but poetry is the most important word in this one ;)
@@VLRuud .....Are you also a fan of Warren Zevon ( by any chance )?
@@wynnssecret8584 Fan is a big word, but I know (and like) a lot of his songs. I must admit, it's been a while since I listened to him.
I've listened to this song many times
Ahhh thank you tom!
Just don’t know why there’s no studio version of this amazing song.
right? we've all been waiting for 2015 for a new album that has yet to materialize.
That's part of the beauty of it. This song is his last live performance, isn't it?
❤️
Of course i got this particular song just after my breakup... at least it's tom waits cus i know she hates it (her loss)
❤❤❤❤
How come I don‘t know this one? It‘s Not on any of his Studio Recording, is it?
It is from Late Night with David Letterman - he performed it as a goodbye to Dave on one of his final shows
🙂
Hate it when I burn my eggs
