    'The choice to leave...
    Was a good one. '
    Thank you, Tom. So much.

As a person who has never found peace and a home and knows EXACTLY what it feels like to take one last look..... I am felled by his ability to find us in our souls and express exactly what it feels like. There is a reason why his voice is angry but the words are hopeful with a dash of ambivalence. The empty bobble heads out there who have never experienced life might not get it, but I do.

That voice. That voice! Those lyrics! That music. This song…Tom, you always give me hope to keep plugging away, at surviving in this mad world however different it may be sometimes.

I can’t believe this beautiful song has not been released on apple music. I completely found tom by accident. I’m so thankful for the great Tom waits.

Let's watch the sun come up in another town
Try our luck a little further down
Leave the cards on the table
Leave the bread on the plate
Put your hand on the gearshift
Put your foot off the brake
    And take one last look
At the place that you are leaving
    Take one last look
    Oh take one last look
At the place that you are leaving
    Take one last look
I beg for something that the wind can carry
The arrow points the way across the waiting prairie
This car looks like it could give us a good run
A choice to leave was a good one
    And take one last look
At the place that you are leaving
    Take one last look
    Oh take one last look
At the place that you are leaving
    Take one last look
Let's look forward to the lights that are new
The world is a ribbon of road for you
All towns have churches and tire shops
They put up speed limit signs and they hire cops
I love to see the wind in your hair
All we ever need we can get anywhere
    And take one last look
At the place that you are leaving
    Take one last look
    Oh take one last look
At the place that you are leaving
    Take one last look
    Oh take one last look
    Oh take one last look

He captures the American experience for 90% of us in one 4 min song.

@Passage jazz, bars, bourbon, urban melancholy...

    • @BroZap1
      @BroZap1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

@Passage No, Tom's poetry is actually uniquely American - the language, word choice, the landscape, his musical influences, migration and war songs... that doesn't mean you can't feel it, though in a way you are "consuming America" wherever you are.

This song inspired me to learn how to finger pick guitar, and I still refer back to it all the time. Thank you kindly Mr Waits.

There are simply some places…some experiences…some feelings that are ubiquitous only to those who are on a path that is less traveled…and Tom is a master storyteller on that path.

Sometimes we are left between a rock and a hard place. I escaped also and am much happier now. Sometimes divorce is necessary. Good luck bro!

I heard the song when originally aired on Letterman. I immediately thought, I want this song played at my funeral". The tone, especially with the accordion, makes the song sound sad but it's not. It's about change, and the wonders to be found.

If you're leaving I always think it's best not to take one last look. You might pause for deeper reflection of your decision to do so, hesitate and then never leave even if you were forced to.
Never look back and try to take whatever good memories you have along with you.

Fair point … but I think Tom just enjoys getting a bit sentimental occasionally 🤷🏻🌻 Travelling, moving on, is a rich area for reflection, while at the same time celebrating the process of renewal… Tom balances the two beautifully here 🏙️

It seems this song is about the exodus from the plains during the nineteen thirties dust bowl era.

Wait's voice, the minor key, and accordion make the song sound melancholy, but the lyrics, at least to me are uplifting. Leaving someplace where you were happy, with great memories, deserves a last look. And then it's off to the next adventure that we want to take. .

You lived at the place, but it was not your home.

    • @Dylanesque

I can certainly relate to that. I've been looking for a place to call home for more years than I care to remember.

    • @rayray7561

It's funny because I don't get that at all from the lyrics. To me it sounds they are leaving their home for another, with adventure in between.
