This week, I made a different kind of video where I try to authenticate a rare NES game. I’m not sure how I feel about it honestly, but I do love this thumbnail that my wife mocked up for me :)
I just cashed out all my store credit and picked up a copy from our local game store. You’d think it would be quicker to find board pics when searching online, but you were my first actual good source. Thanks for making this. It helped verify my copy 👏
A year late with my comment but, I am from Sweden and can confirm that our NES carts have all english on the back of them, the common codes we used here was SCN and EEC. I have Mr.Gimmick myself and it looks just like your copy so it's totally a legit cartridge you have.
@@BigOleWords Yes this game was imported by the Swedish distributor Bergsala AB to be sold in the Scandinavian region of the PAL countries, including Finland, hence the letters SCN at the back. Also, because it was a regional release, there was no need to have any other languages represented, so they defaulted with English.
4:28 Ackshually, if I'm gonna be pedantic, the FME-7 mapper is basically a 5B _without_ the audio channels, since the NES wouldn't be able to use them anyway. It's not a sound chip. Comparing Mr. Gimmick to 5B 'Gimmick!' for Famicom, you'll quickly notice the difference in music. Great that you managed to grab a legit one, it's really rare! 👌 Think it only got a PAL release in Sweden of all places... Maybe that market just didn't have any translated back labels, not sure. (edit: yeah that's exactly the case, just saw the top comment 😆)
I have a buddy I bought Wall Street Kid for CIB, because it was legit his favourite game! I cant play it (not like its impossible, Im just no good at it), so I hope you do a video some day! Congrats on gimmick! Its a fun one!
Great collection my friend, from my research it looks legit. I also heard about return of the joker being used, but like you unless they are top notch scammers with insane skill I think it’s legit. Great pick up. Last time I seen it, they wanted 700 USD for it. So I’m sure it’s a lot higher now.
I don't usually buy super expensive games but what I do to make sure that the ones I am buying are not counterfeit I get carts that are dirty or have a slightly torn label or have a little cracked plastic or other blemishes like that when I see a game in perfect condition or is a super rare game but it is super cheap I usually pass on it
That’s a very sound strategy as all the fakes look super pristine. That’s what messed me up with Mr. Gimmick, not only do I never see it for sale, but the only copy I find looks way too perfect. Worked out though!
Did you put back the proper back cover on Mr Gimmick with SCN on the back label. Because the one you replaced it with is German DAS. This would totally devalue the game it you were going to resell it.
Haha yes I did! I love collecting PAL stuff but I don't know anything really about the nuances of the region differences. This was my first real experience with a rare one, and I definitely know more now than I did a couple months ago!
So wait a minute...are you telling me my translucent mint green copy of Little Sampson that I paid $24.95 is a fake?! I even made sure it had the correct copyright date "Some place in Japan on 19XX" and the vendor finished off with a pinky sware. What is the world coming to when you can't trust the guy that's selling a game in an alley behind an old hollowed out K-Mart from the back of a cargo van?! Dark times my friends, dark times indeed.
Cool find, but I'm kind of sad that you switched the back; despite the label being only in English; your original back plate has a big "SCN" plastered on it in the corner. SCN is the abreviation used for the Scandinavian region carts; it was most likely the original back. 🤷🏻♂
Hi thanks im a subscriber. Question please : So all those black cartridges that say Tengen on them are AUTHENTIC ? Theyre not knock offs and ok to sell on Ebay ? How do we know if a cartridge is not an authentic licensed one ? Like those gold ones that are shiny with like 4 games in one or with a switch on the back of the cart... Those are not Authentic and not ok to sell on Ebay right ? Thanks. Anybody knowledgeable please reply soon
Hey dude love your videos, the best way to tell if your rare Nes games are real is to check your chips with the database. I compared a pic of the real board which matches yours perfectly. Congrats you have a real one!
I know this video is old but, with this being a PAL B NES game, you're lucky it worked at all in the NTSC NES. I have the PAL B Smurfs game (die Schlümpfe), and it plays just fine on level 1. But as soon as I get to level 2 or 3, the screen gets all scrambled. So I was never able to play that. Funny how the 7 NES games you showed at 0:45 are 7 of the 14 games that I don't have. Darn those prices! I had to get repros of the last 14 that are too expensive.
PAL B does seem to be more of a crap shoot. Gimmick and Ufouria work fine but none of the Disney ones do. I still haven’t figured out which ones will work ahead of time. I made a whole videos about the PAL exclusives if your interested :) th-cam.com/video/LBmWv6W9eqs/w-d-xo.html Also, Smurfs is one I’m missing, nice!

I just found your channel and I just want to say that I'm super impressed with your content. Keep it up man 👍
Hey thanks, I really appreciate you saying that!
The back shell was correct. Swap it back. SCN is Scandinavia
Yes sir! Someone did point that out and I switched it back. Close call!

I have the game and the box, and it has Bergsala branding on it. I don't think the cartridge has Bergsala mentioned.
As a Finnish person i can tell that this copy is legitimate
As an American, I say thanks :)
The nice thing is that an EverDrive N8 lets you play all the PAL games without importing.
Oh yeah, neat! Even the Disney PAL exclusives work on that?

Glad it’s the real deal. Great addition to the already amazing collection!

That’s a game I’ve never even tried to play. One day!
Impressive NES collection! I get incredibly nervous buying games online...stupid reproductions.
Yeah for sure. I thought I was out, but Mr. Gimmick pulled me back in!

I hope you got some free candy out of that van while you were at it.

Why do you think I approached him in the first place? Free candy!

Nice one. Grats on the find
Thanks!
This is a cool video. I just opened up a 3DS that I bought and there was a bed bug in it. So, it can always be worse.
Ewwwwww
Great video game looks to be legit. If so nice pickup if not you still got a new game to play.
That’s true, but there’s a difference of hundreds of dollars between the two!

Yep! Someone else did point that out at the time the video came out so I thankfully rectified that mistake quick ;)
It's authentic. I have the game myself. The back label was also authentic until you changed it.
Thankfully the comments corrected me and I switched it back!
My Canadian NES games have English and French
Really? I’ve never seen that!

Hooray!
If you get the Famicom version you can play this at 60hz and not have the screen glitches and I think it's also cheaper. (nope it's $400+) Never mind
No wait it is still cheaper, just that the NES version is waaaay more expensive.
Yeah this is a tough one. Cool to have as a collector but there's several things off about playing it.
Def real. I also made dominoes with my 27 NES games.
And also, I got my NES for free from a friend, and my sister found a Tube tv on the side of the road.
I'm gonna need video evidence of the NES domino action :)
