    Great vids. I've (I'm sure many others) have been searching for this kind of info that is aimed strictly at art/studio work. Unfortunately, with the way too many false/scam products that are supported by just as many, false and scam driven reviews, my my head is spinning constantly trying to make a decision to purchase a projector for my art studio. Could you please update the "$250 projector" choice, with current models that are available. Great work. Thanks

    Thank You for the work you put into informing us. One question, what projector do you recommend to project small images. 5X7 and 8X10 size.

    • @tracingmasterpieces
      @tracingmasterpieces  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think any dlp projector would work fine for that. Since you are working at a small size, you can just get a cheap low-resolution dlp projector like a pico projector. At that scale, the projector will be relatively close to the surface( like 2 or 3 feet), so the light from the projector will be plenty bright enough. You can see some of my other videos that demonstrate this. Just make sure to check the "throw distance" and make sure it can focus that closely. Usually the dlp pico projectors can do that.

    I purchased a Phillips pico nano but couldn't get the wifi to work with iphone11. I was wondering if you could tell me how to hook up to my Hp Computer. For transfer images off of the computer to Nano to project images to trace. THANK YOU for any help you can give me. I purchased this for the short throw you recommended. I couldn't get a y converter for my phone because they don't sell them anymore. If I can use with my computer it would be awesome. I only want to use it for tracing on canvases.

      You're welcome! I haven't been keeping up to date with the latest projectors. I suspect that the technology hasn't changed all that much in these small form factor projectors. Maybe new projectors might have "smart" features, but I don't know much about that.

    Thanks a lot for the pico projector info and all the bits and pieces you use. I've started to look over projectors and have found some in the $250 - 300 range with very high illumens like 2000 - 3000! Would they still be OK to set up for tracing in the studio - woud they give a brighter image? Thanks a lot and cheers.

    • @tracingmasterpieces
      @tracingmasterpieces  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Difficult to say for sure without seeing which projectors you are referring too, but I know that companies can measure the brightness in different ways, and thus use different values for how bright they are. You have to consider physics as well- most small pico projectors will have very small light-sources and I think most of them are relatively the same, using the same hardware, etc.. I think projectors with a higher "native resolution" should technically be brighter, because they have to project more pixels, and have a bigger array of light being projected..

    Great video, just wondering if you have any ideas of projectors that show grids, values, black and white, maybe handset. The autograph ones went while back they seemed to have most qualities, told aught to go for something with lots lumens etc... looking for one that you think has it all budget less than 500 dollars. Has to be with features such as values etc.. that help when painting. thanks lots

      I don't know of any of those type. I'm just familiar with basic projectors, and they tend to be pretty limited with regards to art/image features since they focus on video/movies. In my case, if I needed those options, I'd probably just use an image editing software to make the images and then transfer them to the projector. Obviously it isn't as nice than something built in, but it's not that difficult for me to do. It might be a hassle for other people though, so I understand the desire for those features.

    • @tracingmasterpieces

      Look for something that is sturdy and strong, because you don't want your projector to fall and break. Also if you get something that holds tight and doesn't wobble, it will be easier to work with. I use a combination of a tripod/armature/selfie-stick. The selfie stick is useful for extending from a tripod (stick needs a tripod socket). The armature is useful for clamping to a drawing board (can also attach selfie stick to armature too). Tripod is useful if you don't have anything to mount stuff to. I have other videos demonstrating these things.

    Been watching your programs off and on for a couple years at least!!
    Tried to contact you through Discord but unable to contact you.
    Was going to ask you to do an update on your opinion on recent micro/mini art cube or such projectors and their costs!
    Looked at a Pico mini s2 ?
    I'm not really computer literate and was hoping you could spoon feed me on how to get Android phone to project by itself....or through a competent device.........
    .......or do I need to invest in an Apple phone or?
    Anyhow I love the way you present stuff...just need more detail and slower explanation to babytalk me through the complicated ABC's of connections both wired and unwired.
    I listen but don't really get it yet!
    I use to paint realistic but my brain and mind are dimming on me. I'm thinking this might help me keep up better getting the out line done....then filling in the content properly.
    Hope you can respond.

      Hi,
      I haven't been keeping up with projectors- I've been trying to get other things working in my life. I don't own a smartphone, so I'm not sure how to connect a projector to one of those. That stuff is complicated for me too. Sorry I can't be of much help, but I figure I'd at least give a reply.

      Your very kind. If I can figure out how to get set up in my tree house on the oregon coast...my home is under 400 square feet.
      I have very little space...and you have given me the best shot to get back in the game with small projector space available!
      Until I watched you...I never thought about using it to save my eyesight and time etc.
      Makes sense...so I'll study it better.
      I'm 71 .....and my wife passed recently.
      So I'm seriously thinking of re-training myself to create beauty and creative things people with limited expendable income might buy in these trying times.
      At least I have a social security check to fall back on...but it's not enough!
      Thank you for your response...and I hope to share my self-taught talent with you someday.
      Just got to get back on the horse after too many years away!😊

      @@ronk7718I'm a self-taught artist too. I'm 37 and trying to find some stability in my life that I can rely on. Lately I've been trying to figure out a way to encapsulate the things I find meaningful so that I can share it with others. It's difficult for me though, because I have trouble expressing the things I want to say. So I'm not sure what advice I can give, but I do know that a good way to get back into the artistic process is to just start making more art. Practice is just a repetitious thing, like an exercise that gets the body moving and things flowing and functioning. Sometimes the best way just comes naturally. I find that life is like that- a type of pattern. It repeats in so many interesting ways, like the day and night cycle, the oscillating heart, the echo of sounds, the seasons, and so much more. This pattern is one of the meaningful things I wish to convey now in everything I do. But it is difficult for me, because it's so vast and inifnite of a concept, and I am just me with the limited words and ways of expressing just a small part of it- and the people listening can only hear so much anyway. Perhaps I think too much.. Anyways- I wish you all the best. I hope your art develops well, and I'd love to see it someday.

    • @tracingmasterpieces
      @tracingmasterpieces  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      hmm.. That's tough. It would be difficult to find a portable/pocket sized projector with those features. But there are larger more bulky projectors that you could find that are more suited for presentation-like setups (these might have to be set far back from the surface), and they'd probably need to be plugged in, wired, etc. I'll keep an eye out for anything though. I saw that there is the VIVIMAGE Explore 3 that has both vertical and horizontal keystone.. but I don't know how suitable it is for making art, and it is big and bulky.

    Just want to say thank you for setting me on the right path! Because of your videos, I learned about Native Resolution and lumens, and then I looked for AAXA. Then, like the others, I found the AAXA S2 is no longer available. So, I went to their website and looked around at the newer projectors. I was waffling over the P7 because of the price, but then I found this video. th-cam.com/video/WYDq6Z-YC-k/w-d-xo.html where he compares 28 different projectors. Your advice was spot on! Looking for the Native Resolution, DLP, and the lumens is the key to finding a good projector. I wrote down your list of 5 things to get in a projector, and that guided me through this grueling process. So, thank you so much and I hope you continue making more videos.

      @ginab6434 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Alicia_Michelle I got the P7. The picture quality is good at a small size but the program interface is clunkier than I expected. It’s not very easy to navigate thru my jump drive to find the picture I want. So I’ll have to buy a new thumb drive for only art projects that are current to make the process less cumbersome.

    Hello I am a photographer looking to purchase a projector that I can use to transfer some of my photographs to painting. I read your reviews on the aaxa s2 mini and I like the features, but what would be best when versatility is needed. I have negatives from SLR, medium and large format cameras that I would also like to work with. I also have actual prints that I would like to transfer in addition to the digital images that I work with now. Your help is appreciated.

    • @tracingmasterpieces
      @tracingmasterpieces  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi there, I would look into getting a scanner so that you can scan in the negatives and other prints onto a computer. That way you would get nice clear images that you can then transfer to your projector. If you're concerned about versatility, I would think about where you plan to use the projector and what size images you plan to project. If your workspace changes a lot, then having a projector that is easy to move around would be important. If you are projecting large images and need a lot of detail, then you may want a projector that has a native resolution that is good, but sometimes that isn't necessary for tracing since it can take a long time to trace all the details. Sometimes it is better to just trace the general shapes, and for that you don't really need a high resolution projector. I would think about the brightness of the projector though- since you'll need to be able to project the images while also having some light in the room so that you can see what you're doing, etc..

    Great video! One question... if I need to adjust the size of the image on my canvas, do I need to physically move the projector closer or further away from my easel? I was looking at an Artograph 250-090 projector. From the way, it's demonstrated on the video it needs to be physically moved to adjust. I don't want to need to do this. Thanks!

    • @tracingmasterpieces
      @tracingmasterpieces  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks- yes, the projector would need to be moved closer or further away to adjust the size of the projected image.. The throw ratio describes the scale of the image relative to the distance the projector is to the surface. Some projectors allow you to digitally resize the images being projected, so that you can project them at a smaller size, but then you would lose resolution for those images.
