    thanks for the great video. I think one more thing is very important either - to be possible to use it in the light room, during the day. I see you do it, but is the pricture enough clear?
    can you make one more, the like this video, because 4 years later maybe there are other options, more and different. for some cheap but enough good projectors.

    Can you flip the image vertically (in the software)? e.g if you had the projector mounted so the image was natively upside down.

    • @tracingmasterpieces
      @tracingmasterpieces  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can rotate it 180 degrees in software, but I can't vertically flip it. Flipping would invert the image anyways, so I think rotating is better.
      I can rotate it 90 degree increments, so I could rotate a portrait image to fill the landscape sized area better.

      To get a big image, requires moving the projector away from the surface, which will cause the light to dim and require a darker room. Also if the image consists of a lot of darker pixels, the projector will project less light too. Also, the individual pixels will appear larger and more pixelated. So it depends I guess. Also might depend on the projectors specifications too.

Not really kidding as I'm leery of eBay for this kind of purchase. Amazon would be fine but I get confused on their site when projectors are no longer available. I know my request is nervy but I wondered if you happen to see some if you could supply some links. I don't require the most high end as I'm a budding artist but would like one that meets all your specs and is decent. I have been saving up for this purchase. I’m so curious if this projector is still working out for you. It is interesting that the firm making these “white label” projectors from China is using a Japanese name (Ito). There are several artists promoting a similar projector -“pico genie impact” (1,2,3) as something specifically designed for art (sold online only from 1 firm in the UK) with discount codes. I can imagine some of these brands may even be knock offs even if they look identical. I wonder if Texas Instruments has a way to control who is allowed to label their product with “DLP” inside (like Intel)? I wouldn’t have any trust issues at a $35 price point but hard to know if this product will last for the $200 +. I think the average lifespan of small appliances from China is about 1 year (?) (based on Amazon reviews I’ve seen) (so many seem to have a high failure rate). TYSM for sharing all your research. 🙏

    • @tracingmasterpieces
      @tracingmasterpieces  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I don't use mine that much, but it still runs fine. I was lucky with the price of mine (I don't think the seller knew what they were selling). I'd say it is worth $100-150 or so (brand new) in my opinion. It seems like Texas Instruments has their dlp technology in a ton of products, and I don't think that should be a suspicious thing- if anything, it is a good indicator that there is quality tech inside the product. Most of the small pico projectors probably use the same internal components. You'd have to look more at how the build quality is of the shell and interface, etc. When I first got my projector, I was impressed with the weight of it and how solid it felt considering its size. I think that is an important detail- the build quality and materials that they use. The one I have has a metal body, with plastic top and bottom. The button interface is a bit clunky, but it does the job, and I can use the remote if I really want (but I have to point directly at the blue light on back for it to get the signal). I think what the manufacturer does is sell these to other companies that put their own branding onto it- Kodak even sells one of these versions, and these companies just distribute them. One thing I wonder about, is how long the projector will last if it is constantly used in awkward orientations, since there are spinning parts inside, that work to display the colors/image, and how the heat distribution might degrade things (it has a fan that seems to do a good job). Also, considering the smaller size, it might be easier for it to get knocked around or get dropped. So it is important to secure it very well when extending it up in the air with things.. That's probably one of the most important things to keep in mind I think when using it- securing it really well. Anyways- I think it's a very capable device for tracing images, and I've never been disappointed with it. The only thing I think I'd improve with it if I had the choice, was the user interface stuff in the software and how to control the images so that it is easier to navigate and with more options- because that is a bit limited and frustrating at times (if I remember correctly, it would cycle through the images, and I had to pause the image to keep it from cycling).. Anyways, hope this helps.

    Thank you for your video. The only one I found with actual useful information.
    One question: I notice you are projecting your image with no hook up--is that wireless bluetooth--?? I purchased a Miroir M 75 and was delighted with it until I could NOT figure out how to go from my phone--a Samsung Galaxy A42--to the projector and have it display images from my phone. I have all the required adapters, my phone is usb-c compatible, and all I got was a screen that instructed me how to hook up the device. SO frustrating...I cannot find any information about HOW to use this.
    I thought it was my phone so looked into a screen mirroring app, smart screen etc. I can't get the phone to recognize the device? So I might be back to square one--any ideas? The M75 was only $70--I was hoping to stay in the $100-150 budget and now am confused all over again.
    If anyone out there is looking for a pico projector, one helpful search was "Cookie tracing", not art, artists, art projector etc.
    And ALL of the sites think you want to watch TV or movies in a tent in the back yard or on the ceiling....

    • @tracingmasterpieces
      @tracingmasterpieces  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It would need to be set a bit far away to get that size, and thus would require a darkened room at that distance. Also the pixels would become more noticeable at that scale, unless you find a higher resolution projector. But if you don't need the image to be super detailed, then it would be fine I think..

      You would have to check the specifications of the projector you are interested in. Not all projectors have usb ports (mine doesn't have one).. and also, it would have to be the right kind of usb port. Some projectors have a usb port but are not used for transferring images. It might only be used for hooking up a mouse or something like that. So you'd have to check the specifications for the projector.

    • @tracingmasterpieces

      The projector I use is 100 lumens, and it is bright enough for me. Since I position it relatively close to the drawing surface, the projected image is very bright and I can trace images easily without it being dark. So I would say 100 lumens or more is fine. The further away you position the projector, the dimmer the projected light will be and the darker the room will need to be.

A cheaper option would be a generic tripod with an action selfie-stick that can attach to it.. something like this: www.walmart.com/ip/iPhone-Hole-Shocking-Mount-Inch-Self-Pink-Monopod-With-1-4-Camera-Holder-For-Portrait-Selfie-Screw-Extendable-Adajustable-Stick-InnoLife-Samsung-Hand/327826695 ..You can attach something like that to a Tripod and save some money.

      I think smaller projectors are more suitable for this kind of work, as they are lighter weight, though they may be more fragile. It is important to get a strong support for it so it doesn't fall. If it has a socket for a tripod, you can find equipment to mount it on/attach it.

      Depends how dark your room is, how bright the image is that you'll be projecting (darker images would be more difficult to see), what color your canvas is or your wall (darker colors are more difficult to project onto).. If the image and surface is bright, and the room isn't too bright, you could easily project a 10 foot or more image. You would start to see some of the pixels though since the projector is low resolution.

      I don't think it matters that much for close/small projections. Higher resolutions will provide a higher concentration of detail, but when you are tracing it can become tedious to trace every single detail. The projector I have has a low resolution, so you can see some of my videos for an idea on how that resolution looks.

    • @tracingmasterpieces

      That is a nice feature to have. That helps if you can't position the projector directly facing the surface, or if you want it off to the side a bit. But if you have a good way to mount it, then you won't need it.

      It is the Manfrotto 244 Variable Friction Magic Arm with Camera Bracket.. You also would need the Manfrotto Super clamp... Manfrotto also has other types of articulating arms, but I haven't tried them. I used mine for my heavy camera before I bought my projector.

    Love your tips and recommendations, however, nothing on Amazon passes your "5 things" list currently sold on Amazon for less than 350$ US... and I have been looking for anything that covers at least 4 of your list and most under 600$ don't even do it now. I have found one at 189 for the knockoff like yours, but it doesn't have a tripod mount, or card slot... they are getting real cheap these days.

    Thank you for this info and your channel sorry I’m late to the party! I did just pull the trigger on one, second hand, that appears to have the 5 criteria, but other than being second hand ($30 shipped, buyer protection) my biggest red flag is that it was nearly impossible to find any information on it. Finally I found a manual online for it and was wondering if you heard of it or see something I should have paid attention to that I didn’t, it’s called Simplebeamer vipico dlp ?

      @@tracingmasterpieces so it finally arrived! This is something I got second hand for $30, it has a sticker with its more universal name “Gp1s” and I got it with no tripod or charger but luckily it was a matter of finding a micro usb. Also I did not have everything I would need such as my own tripod or a tf memory card, but really what made me least prepared to make a decent judgment on it was my own lack of experience! All that said, it works! It doesn’t have the self adjusting screen perspective even though at least it does have dlp. For the work I would like to use it for I would benefit from some spontaneity so even though it can use a memory card I was tackling without experience or any available user manual, how to set up screen mirroring on my iPhone, and again I need to stress that I am not someone who knows what they are doing! The result has been weird, because for a brief moment I was able to and then I couldn’t anymore and when I was it was because I had an hml cable connected but it still didn’t last and it wasn’t clear to me what I was doing wrong. Then I plugged it into my iPad, maybe worth noting that the iPad may have been released closer in time as this device than my iPhone, and it works! Ok not right away, some weird stuff was going on with colours and stuff at first and I got a little lost in the menu without using the remote which doesn’t seem essential luckily but I still don’t know because it’s batteries are dead. So for $30 +some cheap accessories I am still pretty happy but I have a lot to learn as well! I wonder if I could use those plug in miracast things maybe?

    • @tracingmasterpieces
      @tracingmasterpieces  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SolarPunk80 That sounds like it worked out well for you :) Too bad there isn't a manual, as maybe that would have some guides on how to use it. You'll probably figure out stuff as you use it more, though. You could maybe try to search on how other projectors handle miracast stuff and maybe see if you can do the same with yours- I don't have any experience with that sort of thing. Sounds like you got a good deal though!

      I don't have a phone to test that, so I'm not sure how that sort of thing works. I'd assume you can do that, but it probably depends on the software version and what phones it supports.

      I haven't been looking at projectors lately, so I'm not sure where to get one. I bought mine off of ebay, and managed to get a good deal on it. If you search for dlp pico projectors, you'll probably find a variety of projectors. Most of the small sized projectors that use dlp will be very similar to each other- you just have to do some research whenever you find one and make sure it has the features you want. I've heard that the Kodak dlp pico projectors are good. Sorry for not being much help- I know how difficult it can be trying to find a projector.

    Really helpful and I have just purchased the Kodak badged cube projector (could only find this and a Sunny badged in the UK).
    How did you find the projector when screen mirroring with an iPhone/iPad? I am finding the colours are very over saturated and the image is squished, so a circle is projected as an oval, what ever angle the projector is at. Can you offer any advice?

    • @tracingmasterpieces
      @tracingmasterpieces  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't tried mirroring, but it sounds like maybe the resolution of the iphone/ipad isn't the same as the projector, so it stretches it to be the same aspect ratio. I'm not sure how to fix that, but if you are projecting an image, maybe you can rescale it to compensate for the stretch.
