Great vid buddy, I can honestly say I’ve never seen a set of flaps down here in Florida! Thanks for showing and explaining.

Probably not! It will be interesting to feel the difference for me. One of my goals was to get this car as close back to stock as I could. Get everything functioning. And I like a little warmth now and then.

A company called americanpowdercoating.com used to sell the original thermostats. Not sure if they still do, but it’s worth a call.

Thank you for this video. It helped me install that spring correctly

It’s best not to use ‘freeze plugs’, as the air still keeps the heat exchanger inner pipes cooler. If you look at the heat exchangers, they have their own ‘hot air exhausts’ on them.👍🏾🛠

I’ve never be actually done it here. The heat exchangers have their own flap, but a little air does go through. I wonder if a plug with a smallish hole might achieve both results?

@@Misunderstoodboygenius Look closley at the flat outer part by the flap lever. There is a tiny slot. THAT is the exhaust for the hot air, when the main ‘heat to cab’ flap, is closed.👍🏾🛠

Awesome powder coating is the name of the company that the guy on the Samba who makes them the ones that fail open. He also makes bad ass cylinder tins.

Are the fan shroud cooling flap "clips" new or just cleaned up the old ones? If new, where from? Thank you. PS I really appreciate that you show when you overlook something and then go back and fix it as that helps me not make the same easy-to-do mistake!

The ones for the fins? New set. I’d have to research where I found them.

@@Misunderstoodboygenius Thanks. The silver(ish) items you call "clips" in the video holding on elements of the flaps and rods of the thermostat-controlled cooling flaps you manipulate multiple times explaining how they fail open due to spring redundancy and thermostat expansion (lost vacuum) on failure.

Great vid. I was changing my thermos and the rod disconnected inside the shroud. (Murphy did it ) You mentioned a clip for the end of the rod. Guess it fell off ,but I'm thinking I must pull the shroud to get it back in unless you know of a easier way to do it. What kind pf clip goes on the rod ?Thankyou so much for a detailed explanation of the flap system. Are you located in New England?

It is a little press on rectangular type with teeth if I remember right. Just enough to keep it from slipping off. I bought a whole clip kit that came with everything. It had the clips for the flap actuators, washers, rod, and the little clip. Pretty sure you'd have to pull the shroud off, and on a dual port it's nearly impossible with the engine in (ask me how I know). I am in New Mexico.

Thermostat should expand at 168 degrees. You can test it with a heat gun or hair dryer.

My bug has neither flaps nor thermostat, flaps I can get, wondering if I could rig it for manual open and closing as to only need it for starting and have a temp gauge....

It sure is nice having the automatic. Warmth in winter and proper warmup year round. The day you forget to open them though you smoke your heads. I have found working thermostats for as little as $50. Small price to pay.

Is the thermostat rod in the bag new and if so where did you get it? (my, thermo, rod, and flaps are all missing)

    • @Misunderstoodboygenius
      @Misunderstoodboygenius  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

The flaps I bought used, the rod was on the engine and the thermostat I believe. I bought a couple spares so I’d have some in the future. I know that Daften Classics? Is making new ones. Just don’t get the Mexican ones. They fail closed, not fail open.

Very well done! Way to go; I installed everything in my motor. A lot of naysayers say they’re not necessary; I run the whole system.
You are right; awesomepowdercoat.com has the thermostats and the rest of the parts, including engine tin.
