Hi there. I am Geoff Goins, the misunderstood boy genius. I love wrenching on old cars and new cars to keep them going. When I find one I will rescue and rehab old and odd vehicles. I learn on the fly and will bring you along for the journey.
I also love astronomy and the night sky, so we might have some videos about that from time to time.

Volvo Amazon 122s Gearbox Installed! (And a new tool to test)
มุมมอง 2.2Kปีที่แล้ว
Holy crap! This has taken forever. All I wanted to do was change a bad U-joint. Then we might as well do all of them. Then we might as well change the pinion seal. And that transmission sure looks like it's leaking a lot... Then we break things. Find parts. Break AGAIN. Find more parts. Meet some fantastic people who have parts. Reassemble. Then we can put it all back together! Thanks for liste...

Hey! After the disaster of not properly putting on the top plate, I also had some internal problems where the gearbox wouldn't shift out of 4th. It looked like one of the dogs wasn't moving back into its proper position. Today we are going to take the gearbox apart and try to find out what the problem might be.

jäla dåre.
Vapors not fumes. Completely different animals.
@@brianchisnell1548 fume noun plural noun: fumes gas, smoke, or vapor that smells strongly or is dangerous to inhale. "clouds of exhaust fumes spewed by cars"
The M40 was a good box. I liked the M41 and M45 too. The M41 could have the solenoid on the left or the right side. J and D series. The M45 was a little bit rare iirc. The m47 was ok... but it was light and a lot of people went back to the m40 or m41 with overdrive.
What is the toggle switch that is to the right of the flashlight.
@@Ljblossom that’s the rear defrost window switch. This car has a replacement rear window without it. Good eye!
I watched a couple videos, this was One of them. Very helpful, thank you. My car was an 07 Fusion. If anyone’s looking for the bulb for that car, the AutoZone part number is 2721LL. Thanks again.
Your perseverance and patience paid off good job! The last windshield I put in on my 72 Beetle I did crack it. I am putting in a new windshield this week and your video has helped. Thank you. I do think I’ll use silicone spray though instead of Windex.
On my 1971 beetle, I had aproblem with the h the switches, their opening gets blocked by what seems like gunk and require increasing pressure to switch on. As I remember the top access was easier, after removing the tank. Also are you aware that the brake fluid deteriorates the paint and dipports rust on the steel structure beneath it. What to do, clean up and double epoxy coat. Wasn’t available im my time.
What about the charcoal canister? I don't have one but I live in Las Vegas and during the summer it is pretty necessary. Any idea where to get a replacement or just fashion a new one?
@@seancollett6 honestly don’t know. Maybe a generic one.
Thank you 😊 you made it so easy I didn't even look at the directions just followed you
I have the same exact problem, was going to work and realized the red light didn't come up when braking, only when pushing hard. Thanks for making the video, now I'm positive what the problem is and how to fix it. Thanks.
The real problem is it does not last. Now all cars have a mechnical switch, never had a failure there.
Thank you. Very useful

Great video very helpfull thankyou
I had to replace my passenger side door lock cylinder today. This video really helped me! Only issue I had was trying to get that window cord back onto the wheel. Took me a while to figure out where to adjust to loosed tension to get cable back on wheel.
I’m glad I could help! All of that stuff in the door is really pretty simple, which is nice. Modern cars have such complicated doors. It’s crazy. Once you understand how everything works it’s pretty easy.
That's great, thanks. So its possible to do the change without lifting the vehicle?
With some squeezing yes. I’m a big guy and can do it.
Sell,sell,sell
I think I might make some videos every time I get something in the post what a bunch of crap
You should! I see that unboxing videos are very popular.
what if you have 2 red wires, one green wire and a white wire
Maybe this was asked already.. what size engine does it become with all this work done? Thanks
Nice usefull video. Do you know if it's the same lever on a type 1 engine on a early bus T2A ?
Thanks. Sorry, I don’t I’m afraid.
To negate having to bleed the brakes unless you were planning on doing it anyway, when changing out the switch, have the new one in hand while someone behind the wheel places light pressure on the brake pedal and quickly thread the new one in. Minimal fluid loss without getting air in the system.
Hello Jeff. I'm commenting here because this is the video that led me to subscribing to your channel. Hope all is well with you and hope to see some new content from you in the future. If not, I understand too. Take care!
Hey there. That’s a great story. I may do more content in the future, but I really just enjoy working on my cars and driving them. Filming makes everything take twice as long and I’m likely never going to be a TH-cam star. If something is really interesting I’ll do a new video on it. There’s a couple big projects and some Volvo stuff I need to do. The Ford transmission went out but I’m not fixing it. 🤣
I replaced my master cylinder and reinstalled the brake switches from before then boom no lights. Dont know what happened
Make sure you’ve got them wired up correctly, and check all your grounds grounds are a huge problem. Also, sometimes an air bubble can get in there and cause them to not work.
@@Misunderstoodboygeniusgood to know thank you I didnt think i screwed it up that bad
@@throwaway-hp1wt just stuff to check.
If a bubble gets in there, how do you correct that around the switches?
Same thing happened to me, I was gonna get new switches but I’m not sure if it’s just on my end. Did you fix it and if you did what was the problem
Some grease will help with wear, plastic dry's out..
Thank you!
This video helped me and the wife get our 1967 122 started after sitting 6 years. I knew to use carburetor cleaner; but didn’t know where to find the carburetor 😅 thanks for posting this detailed video.
I have done hundreds of these motors . Later close eyes. DAM GO MOTORS DROVE THE HELL OUT OF THEM ON PROBLEMS BEST VW MOTORS.
What brand of kit did you bought?
I’d have to dig to find exactly, but likely I got the kit from CIP1
Excellent video-the Volkswagen Beetle was a high quality and very enjoyable car when it was built and should not have air leaks, poor heating, or fuel smells as so many of them do-parts like the seals and vents you have covered age, and when you put them back in proper working order, it makes owning and driving a VW much more enjoyable. Not having cold air blowing in on you from the vents and having a working defroster are pretty simple tasks to do right, but are often over looked or improperly done
Thanks for the video! We recently bought a 74 Super Beetle and the lever is missing on the driver's side and the barrel nut is missing on the passenger side. Your video is going to be a big help when I get under there to set this all up.
By no means am I an expert at putting two stroke engines together but this guy has got to take the cake as far as doing it ass backwards
I’m not either. Never claimed to be. But it runs and s still running. I found it laying in my yard and wanted to f*ck around with it.
Yes I see all kinds of problems
Hey you need to pull the spark plug wire off so you don't accidentally start
Sorry for the down mate, but you wasted my time. How to get those bl**dy elbows out of the darkness and airtight back into place is of more importance (no information can be found on the web) than stating the obvious someone not clumsy will gather anyway before he lays hands on and those who are should not try anyway... Regards Damian
Are you talking about the ones that come from the heater channels? The only information I’ve ever seen shows people just cutting a hole inside the car to get down there. Then replace them with the stainless steel, flexible, exhaust hoses, 72 mm I believe. That was really not the title of my video, I’m just focusing on the heater box.
@@Misunderstoodboygenius Are you kidding me or is about derailing the post? Unless you really don't know that the tubes right and left leading to the vents the fresh air box is connected to eventually are called that due to their shape. I am afraid, but if that's the case you should refrain giving the smartie on the topic...
👍👍👍!!!
I think you definately should have changed those tranny bearings while at it, next time around you might get old or sick and will not be able to do it again!!!
I did change both bearings. That may not have made it into the video. The rollers internally were not. I’m getting an M41 to replace this one soon.
Awesome powder coating is the name of the company that the guy on the Samba who makes them the ones that fail open. He also makes bad ass cylinder tins.
Where did you get the brake light switches? By the way great video. Both of my brake lights stopped working at the same time.
Really good video. I just ordered some seals and will be getting ready to do mine.Your video is very helpful!!!
Good! I never did finish a part 2, but it’s pretty straight forward.
I have a 2006 Ford explorer what does the heater valve look like
No idea.
Where did you get the switches? I need both as well. Thank you!
I believe CIP1 or Jbugs.
Is the thermostat rod in the bag new and if so where did you get it? (my, thermo, rod, and flaps are all missing)
The flaps I bought used, the rod was on the engine and the thermostat I believe. I bought a couple spares so I’d have some in the future. I know that Daften Classics? Is making new ones. Just don’t get the Mexican ones. They fail closed, not fail open.
Are the fan shroud cooling flap "clips" new or just cleaned up the old ones? If new, where from? Thank you. PS I really appreciate that you show when you overlook something and then go back and fix it as that helps me not make the same easy-to-do mistake!
The ones for the fins? New set. I’d have to research where I found them.
@@Misunderstoodboygenius Thanks. The silver(ish) items you call "clips" in the video holding on elements of the flaps and rods of the thermostat-controlled cooling flaps you manipulate multiple times explaining how they fail open due to spring redundancy and thermostat expansion (lost vacuum) on failure.
Did you put any kind of sealer between the push rod tubes and the push rod tube gaskets, or, between the push rod tube gaskets and the head or block?
I used some Permatex on there. To keep them in place and to seal any gaps.
What are the black plastic corrugated tubes that are on each side of the air box you rebuilt and going behind it? You pointed to one and said you "snapped it". (they are loose in my car under the hood and not connected to anything)
Those go to the air vents in the top of the dash.
Thank you so very much. I now know how to rebuild mine and to where to go to get the foam pads Mine is a '73 and all those lines are off and stuffed up in the corners. Do you know where I can find a diagram to show me what line/hose goes where? Was the large circular seal also from Wolfsburg?
If I remember right everything came from Wolfsburg. Remember, supers had a different box.
@@Misunderstoodboygenius Thank you. I will be watching and liking the rest of your VW youtubes. My car is a standard Type 1 Beetle, 1973 completely original except for minor molestations. (like the airbox and its tubes)
Having a similar issue, but I'm now curious if I'm wired wrong. I'm using a wiring harness that one would more likely find on an old Chevy and need to know which of the 3 prong switch does/needs what. Pretty sure the top is for the dash light, but is left (on both switches) from fuse box or does it matter. I'm told they run parallel so I get that.
I believe they do. The exact routing may be different on different years. Best to check a wiring diagram.
