Stunning brick work pal most brickies just bash it up now on a price and the lack of quality shows! Long live the artisans🙂

On the last job i ever undertook for someone else, which was in London, I took loads of old stocks home with me from the demolition. Stored them for a few years, then built the back of my large extension with them as facing bricks. However, the mix I used was 4 sand/1 lime/1 Snowcrete. The darkish buff colour ( flush joints) is so much nicer than using a standard OPC mix. Great work as always Stu.

I work w reclaimed bricks - a very rewarding process, you give them bricks a new life. And they look awesome once put in place. Disagree w me ;) - They don't make them like that any more !!! BTW, I use glass mortar (good for brick), which is white - it makes the final result very aesthetically pleasant, but the white mortar needs to be washed off brick carefully to keep it from being whitewashed.

What is more satisfying than standing back to admire your brickwork, it looks great. I built English garden wall bond a couple of months ago on some granary steps in lime mortar. The bricks were all different lengths, it was a nightmare on the header course, I just couldn't get both sides how I wanted it.

You never can mate, even the new bricks are all a couple of mil different. Best you can hope for is the sun doesn't shine directly down on the back end

The strength in that wall is off the scale. Be up for hundred years that. Providing no women drivers go near it. Worked with a builder who built an extension like that it's still up today. 👍👍. Good work stu. Has kc gone golfing again.

Hi Stu, Great job as always. In South Africa most brick layers use a monofilament brick line. Have you or anyone else here come across this? Could you perhaps elaborate on the pro's and con's of the monofilament in comparison to the braided? Any help would be appreciated. All google searches takes me to fishing line when comparing the two.

Does anyone remember the water bond for foul water manholes, I remember as a lad laying saltglaze piipes and collaring up with sand and cement with a twist of cement bag to stop the gobbo as we called entering the bore. These joints had to polished the next day to ensure hardness and watertight. The inspector would arrive from the council and the whole system including manholes had to be filled with water and studiously inspected for leaks. Hepsleve and the likes soon followed making things much easier.

@Stucrompton1 Is sand and cement mortar OK to use when building a new wall with old reclaimed bricks for the garden? I've read that repointing in sand/cement on an old wall that was originally built with lime mortar can cause problems, but if being newly built, does it make any difference? I've collected about ~1000 old imperial bricks of all types commons, engineering and face over the past few months ready for a retaining wall which will be concrete block faced with brick. Hoping they will look nice all mixed up!
