- THIS WEEK ME AND AL ARE ON OUR FIRST BRICKLAYING JOB FOR OVER 4 WEEKS . ITS A SMALL GARDEN WALL INCLUDING STEPS.
WE DO THE HAND DIG AND SAVE THE SPOIL FOR BACKFILLING, THEN WE PEG IT OUT FOR OUR CONCRETE LEVELS.
WE MIX OUR OWN CONCRETE IN OUR TRUSTY BELLE MIXER. WE THEN SET OUT THE WALL AND MAKE A START ON THE BRICKWORK .....ENJOY

Young fella needs to get himself a good pair of boots. It’s funny how in Britain it seems often you don’t put reo in the trenches. In Australia even without council involvement a trench like this would be at least twice as deep and two layers of 3 bar 8mm reo. Though it would maybe not be as wide as you made it. Best mortar board I ever had was an old aluminium speeding sign. It didn’t suck up the moisture like timber does. Even used the plastic flute board at times (the stuff used to make signs out of) that was very good and light, had a limited life but it lasted pretty well. If you see any speeding signs, if no one is looking, grab them 😂
LAZY DOG . Al has new boots now . We used to use polycarbonate ( plastic conservatory roof material ) but only have 1 left now .ive seen some green plastic ones on Instagram which look good to . I’ll also keep a lookout for speeding signs 😂👌🏼🧱👍🏽

That is exactly what I am skimming the comments for. That corner block. What does it make corners easier or stronger? Or did engineers specify it?
jynnandtonnyx . Hi pal the blocks are used when the face of the wall isn’t going to be seen . In this case in part 2 you will see us build the steps in that corner . It just saves time and face bricks . As the wall is 9” or double skin we can lay the blocks flat which is much stronger plus 2 flat block is 225 mm high , the same as 3 courses of bricks 🧱 . Was this a retaining wall? I’m planning on doing one in my garden to level off a slope and have patio at the bottom part. Will 2 courses of bricks be enough. Wall will be about 15 foot wide and probably about 3-4 foot high (above ground)
It all depends on how much ground you are retaining. There is probably detailed information on line .🧱👍🏽

Seriously though thanks again for the gun , it’s been very busy the last 2 days . I cleaned it last night and ordered more fuel . As we have been so busy the Tongs were neglected. I'd put another cannister of fuel in the Hitachi nails box surely you haven't used that too. How was it ? Did you find it made things easier / quicker ?

As for the wonder gun it’s been busy and started misfiring a lot so all bang and no nail so wasted a lot of gas . I sat down and got into you tube to see how to clean so did that last night .
Our daughter has another 250 boards to go up at her new build hence more gas 😉. So glad and very grateful you sent it Tim thanks again 👍🏽🧱

I know it will take non genuine gas & nails but I must admit I've always rather used quality over cost.

HI Guys can I ask how deep the foundations where and how wide as I am going to attempt to build a similar wall , my first time 🥵
About a foot down and about 16 inches wide . 100 mm concrete should be just right 👌🏼🧱👍🏽

s s Hi pal we use building sand mixed 4 sand to 4 cement with a bit of concentrated plasticiser . We have a video showing how we do it called Throwing a mix in 👌🏼🧱👍🏽

Hi, quick question anybody, when using 75mm bricks how do you gauge your block work level (100mm cavity)🤔
Andrew Marshall 1 course of block is exactly 3 courses of 75 mm brick ... 225 mm 🧱👍🏽
What about the 10mm bed joints would make it 255mm, just wondering how your ties work and window heights. Would you start your block work with a split? Cheers
Andrew Marshall . Blocks are 215 mm so 225 mm with a bed 👌🏼all standard openings are designed to work brick heights 🧱👍🏽
Sorry might be me not explaining it properly.
When your working with imperial brick to metric blocks your bricks will be 30mm higher than your block.
Just wondering if there’s a trick to keep it all gauge.
Andrew Marshall There’s no way to keep them gauge without cutting the blocks to course in . At tie wire level we twist them 1/4 of a turn and put them into perps so they line up with the blockwork Beds 🧱👍🏼

Look forward to part 2. Noted no cleaning of the concrete before 1st couse (dont mean mud). Will you tar paint the back of the completed wall. Interested where you put DPC in. For part 2 point out the weep holes. Are plastic inserts beneficial in this garden app, or could you just leave out a perp of mortar. Hope Alex gets some boots soon. Keep 'em coming.
John Coppock Hi John we started the day after we poured the concrete so it was spotless . Also we never put Dpc in garden walls as it weakens them too much . Also we didn’t paint the back of the wall we put visqueen down the bsck 🧱👍🏽
