  • Victoria 3 comes out THIS MONTH thanks to the announced release date. Here's the thing. I've never played Victoria 2. Today, I attempt to rectify this by giving Vic 2 a shot! Turns out, I'm terrible at it. I played as Tunis and had to westernise which went poorly, then colonised, which went okay, then was conquered because my infamy was too high, which went horribly.
    I just realised I never played Victoria 2.

    If Laith really wants to learn Vic2, how I first familiarized myself with the game was, in this order:
    Brazil, United States, Japan, Germany.
    Brazil is a really chill game, where I'm large enough to not be wiped out, and also being able to choose to just focus on South America, and/or also colonize Africa and Asia.
    United States is just bigger Brazil with way more flavour. PLAYING VANILLA USA IS HORRENDOUS, PLEASE PLAY WITH THE HPM MOD FOR THE US. Vanilla US, when the Civil War is about to start, spams you with hundreds of events that could last a decade or two and won't stop until the civil war is triggered.
    HPM removes these events, and I think replaces them with more consolidated effects.
    Japan is the easiest to westernize, though Persia is relatively easy as well (though if any of the bigger powers want to take you land, you're screwed, be it the UK, Russia, or randomly Spain). For Japan, westernize, industrialize, conquer Korea, eat up China, and expand into SEA.
    Germany is the influence game, the unification mechanic. They're also really powerful, being able to cheese your way into also annexing all of Austria by full sieging them for a few years and making them drop down from Great Power. Forming Italy is pretty fun as well.

    Victoria 2 was the second Paradox game I ever played and i understand your struggle so I'll help you:
    The game was created before Paradox was in the mindset of alt-history so don't play nations that historically got stomped like Tripoli, there are a few exceptions to this rule, Mexico can get sphered by the USA during the Texan war of indipendence and if it has the US will not join the war and will not attack Mexico with the manifest destiny casus belli and Egypt can attrition the Ottomans until it can beat their armies.
    Some fun nations you can play include:
    Any great power (Prussia is the one with the most potential), Sardinia-Piedmont because it has events and decisions geared towards forming Italy, Japan because it can westernise decently quickly and then has got a big juicy China to colonise and The Netherlands (my favorite nation to play) because you get an easy alliance with Prussia so you can easily take out Belgium with the claims you have and then you are in a good position to colonise both Indonesia and Africa.
    Quick tip about colonization: the priorities (as any nation) are the central, Southern and eastern parts of Africa because of their great resources, if you can you should also colonise Indonesia, lastly, be sure to colonise that nation north of Singapore because it produces precious metals which are great resources.

    Hey laith, I know you like some elements of micro, so in Victoria ii, make sure to use your national focus to boost your intellectuals to 4% in low literacy states. Click on a state, and in the top rightish, there is an empty tab square you can click to boost different types of pops. It’s a lot of fun with small countries

    Couple of tips:
    1. Don't play Tunis you turnip
    2. You don't need lower taxes for soldiers, you need to pay your soldiers, you had 0 military spending the entire game, aka soldiers salary.
    3. Culture techs, do them, all of them. Specifically anything that gives you national focuses or research. Education efficiency is important for most countries as most of them start with low literacy. Don't get prestige tech tough, waste of research.
    4.If you are playing as any country with less then 30% literacy, use all of your research on changing that. Unless you expect to be in a war in the next 5 years.
    5. DO MEDICINE, it is the best tech in the game. Remember POPs beat everything, anything that gets you more is worth it.

    You should find some mods, as vanilla vic 2 is incredibly cursed, bland and nigh unplayable. Historical Project Mod (HPM) or Historical Flavor Mod (HFM) are a good start, they add a whole lot of flavor and prevent the AI from colonizing horribly, like the US penetrating Canada.

    a few suggestions for playing a none civilized nation in vic 2, you need to use your focus to increase your learning/literacy rate. You do this by click a province, you will see a little box, top right of the pop up box giving you all the info of the province, click that and choose clergymen, you want the percentage for the clergymen to be at least 2% but for uncivilized nations, 4% will help get you civilized faster. Also, as a none civilized nation, you do not have to worry about bankruptcy happening in your nation (i think that is a base game thing, I play a lot of mods) as your nation does not know what bankruptcy even is.

    • @gamer1634
      @gamer1634 ปีที่แล้ว

      oh, i forgot to say, I suggest doing the financial upgrades when your economy is doing good because that is what allows your country to go into bankruptcy.

    • @gamer1634
      @gamer1634 ปีที่แล้ว

      also, forgot to say, if a European spheres you, your economy will crash because who ever sphered you, gets first dibs on the products of your nation, but at like half of the cost they would pay other countries.

    Civilized Nations are always a higher rank than uncivilized. So the mere act of civilizing helped boost your rank considerably (plus makes it's more costly to take territory from you).
    Using your national foci to boost clergy is super helpful as they are responsible for tech point generation and literacy. 2% of total population is good enough for full tech points, but higher numbers helps increase literacy.
    Bureaucrats help with taxes and also are needed if things like Healthcare reform are passed.
    Tariffs also help early game for revenue, but they make it more costly for your pops to import goods.
    Taxes at max aren't actually 100% of a pops income. There is a real tax rate shown in the tool tip that can be improved overtime to get more tax revenue. (E.g. 100% rate start of game is roughly ~20% real tax rate)

  • @migdrum0792

    You have completly missed the most important mechanic of the game for about 80 years, the national focus ( encouraging pops).
    If you had encouraged clergy in Tunis ( clergy are basically teachers) until they reached the 4 per cent efficiency cap, you would have around 99 literacy towards the end of the game, you would have more research points and techs, and your pops would be richer and better.

    Always slide your tax to the max and if you're civilized then have an endless war with a minor that you're "losing". Declining the sues for peace will make people angry which will make your gov pass reforms super early. If you don't like how the map looks you could also play Throne of Aquitaine. (vic2 mod)
    edit:also max tariffs, the only time you want them down is when you have focused on capitalists and have thousands that won't build if tariffs are too high. Aside from that, if you put tariffs down then your factories will use goods other than your own to make things. And I don't know if you know this but factories get higher output if their input resource is in the same province as the factory.(i.e. fruit province goes with wine factory. coal+glass, wheat+beer. Don't get past 25 infamy.
