Basically 1 degree of ignition timing for each 10F increase in air or coolant temp. So 220 coolant temp pulls 2 degrees and 150 air temp pulls 5 degrees. Great video, I enjoyed it. My little brother was fond of those 4.6 mustang's, he has since passed away and this brought back some smiles to my heart. I myself own a 4 eyed fox, a 1983 GT and people overlook that car all the time. She isn't the fastest but I know that car well and she comes outta the hole pretty decent and 2nd and 3rd gear using the tremec correctly have won me several red light to red light races. I surprise a bunch of kids driving rice grinders who are learning to be quick, they hate getting beat by a 60 year old guy with long hair. Lmbo. I have been building small block Fords since I was 17 and they take a licking and keep on ticking, you can wind them up all day long. Glad to see the Fomoco guys are still out there. Be safe.
I had an '82 Mustang GT. It was the first year that Ford put the V8 back in the Mustang. It came with the 5.0L HO V-8. Factory 2-barrel Holley carb that produced a whopping 157hp @ 4,200 rpm and a 0-60 time of 7.5. Ah, those were the days lol.
@@kens32052 we got a guy here in Town with one. But she not stock. She goes on rolls with the Lambos and vettes that crowd pier six on occasion always passing them in the oncoming lane. It's got to put a damper on their day knowing the big gapped by a stang on their way to a elite car meet. San Leon is a sleeper town.
1983 Mustang GT, nice! I was 15 at the time and that's the car that caught my interest as a teenager wanting to go fast. They restyled the front end from the 1982 model (the first Mustang GT) and introduced a 4 barrel carburetor making 175 hp. I thought it was much better looking than the '82, and that 4 barrel carb really made a big improvement in performance. And so that's the car that piqued my interest in muscle cars. I never did own a Mustang as ultimately I became enamored with Pontiac Firebirds (I had a '74 Formula 400 in high school). But you NEVER see an '83 (or early fox Mustang GT) around anymore. I'm glad to hear that there's an old timer still racing the kids today in his vintage iron, teaching them a thing or two every now and again.
@@kens32052 1982 Mustang GT 5.0 L H.O! Here's a little history lesson for those young uns who don't know: while it's not widely documented, there are essentially 2 muscle car eras. The original, well known era, started with the '64 GTO and it lasted 9 short years until 1972, when the smog regulations kicked in and killed all performance except for the Corvette and Trans Am. The T/A was available with a big V8 (400 or 403 cid) until 1979, then there was a painful 2 years with no real performance options (the Corvette did okay but it's price was beyond the reach of most people) until the introduction of the 1982 Ford Mustang GT, which kicked off the second (and current) muscle car era. Yes, that is correct. The second muscle car era has been going strong for 40+ years, far outlasting the original muscle car era. There has been at least one 'muscle' car available every year since 1982, and we have the 1982 Ford Mustang GT to thank for it. It had a 302 V8, but this was the first time Ford referred to this engine as a '5.0'. It had, as kens32052 mentioned, a 2 barrel carburetor and that whopping 157 horsepower (which Ford referred to as 'H.O.' for 'high output'). I realize that today, riding lawnmowers make more than 157 hp and that it's hard to believe that any car with such low output could ever be considered a 'performance' car, but you kids have to understand how horrible the cars were that were being made in the 1970's and early 80's. Believe it or not, 157 hp in 1982 in a lightweight fox platform Mustang was dealing! There was nothing else faster that year, including the Corvette, though 'fast' that year was a 16.1 second 1/4 mile. The California Highway Patrol even purchased them for high speed pursuit vehicles on Interstate 5. And for a bit more perspective, look up what Carroll Shelby was building in the 1980's. Google 'Shelby GLH-S'. Hint: it was an intercooled turbocharged Chrysler 2.2 L 4-cylinder powering a 4 door econo hatchback that looked like a knockoff of a VW Rabbit. People understandably associate Shelby with Ford, but realize that by this time Iacocca (father of the Mustang) had been fired by Henry Ford II and was now busy saving Chrysler from bankruptcy with K-cars and the original minivan and he managed to coax his old buddy Carroll over to help spice up his rather boring line of cars. Ol' Shel was even quoted at the time saying that people better get used to small turbo 4 cylinders, because the days of big V8's was gone forever. Aren't we all glad he was wrong, as only a few short years later, the new age Cobra was introduced as the Viper with the biggest high performance engine ever put into an automobile.
Yes dude has to hav tough engine sounded like it was cranking out some rpms on few gear pulls mite b my cheap phone but on top b for shift was that the rpm limter working making it cut out got listen or was that valve spring limits

The early mod motors are no joke up to a certain power level. I suspect the Bullit pulled timing after the first run due to heat and or crappy fuel. I had a 82 GT fox body with a 351W and 5 speed years ago. Junkyard build, 300 wheel/330 torque and 3,000 lbs on the dot. Car went 109 mph in the 1/4 with no traction first and second so it was decent. I ran one or two modded 3 valves and they were right next to me so they can be quick.

The shorter rear gear helps a lot in these types of races, as long as you don't lose out too much shifting. *What speed and gear are you guys starting in?*
All races were done from a 20-roll in first gear except for the race against the gen 1 yote where we started at 40 mph in 2nd gear.
*What RPM are you shifting at?*
Just under 7,100.
*What's the ratio of your axle gear?*
4.10; 1st goes to about 52 mph, 2nd to upper 70's, and 3rd is about 105 mph.

I don’t know anyone with those cars.
*Huh come no dig races?*
To reduce the impact of driver skill and tire/suspension setup on performance. The point of the races was to test the Mustang’s acceleration against better cars, not see which driver/setup could manage a better launch.
*What fuel is the Mustang running?*
All vehicles were on 91 octane.
*Why don’t you run E85 or 93 octane?*
Not available in my area, not even close unfortunately.

Its all gear swap and tune with coyote, and automatic. See how how front went up and down when he did the pull, auto eliminates that and is faster than all the things associated with shifting. No paddles, just but it in D, the auto in that year is the same tranny as the raptor 680R.

My first Mustang and my only Mustang was a 2003 Cobra I own that car for 3 years I raced it like a maniac everyday never had any problems with it and I miss it terribly amazing all the Ford haters we got out here. Honestly I knew nothing about the product until I purchase one I originally headed to the Chevy dealer however they were out of stock and what I wanted I was hot to buy a car that day so I ended up at the Ford dealer the rest is history
That built 4.6 Performs very well. Awesome build. I have a soft spot in my heart for the s197 3v. Nothing sounds like these cars.
Love it! Good stuff man. Like you, I've always had a huge soft spot for the 3V and the 05-10 generation is so good looking, when done right. Prime example of a well done 3V. Looking forward to your turbo journey. 👊😎
I had a 67 Mustang coupe with a 5.0 and a top loader 4 speed and the typical speed goodies. It would hold it's own against many "super cars" in first and second. My son had a supercharged NSX and even he was surprised when he drove it.
that sounds like an aweful driving experience, half the day was spent waiting on a tow truck to takke them home :P
Nice to see the work you’ve done, she sounded awesome and performed as well. I had a two 69 Mustang’s back in my day, fast forward 40 plus years and now I drive a stock 2007 satin silver GT 5 speed with 156K on the ole gal, even stock she still has enough when I’m feeling Spirited to have some fun. 😁
keeping that close to a viper is great for a 4.6!!! I reckon its built but holy nice
Seems like the new transmission made all the difference, I wasn’t expecting those results. Nice work
This was really cool! Man, those Vipers are bad ass! Love that you got that Stang running strong!
those 4.6 engines were great! Sounds sick with exhaust too!
Awesome build. My favorite generation of mustang as well.
Love the all motor build so far looking forward to see what the turbo setup will do. Was gonna put a supercharger on my 3V but holding off because gas prices are through the roof right now.
Yea, FJB!!! Let's go Brandon
We've passed peak oil. From now on every barrel of oil pulled from the ground will cost more and more to produce, gas will never be this cheap again! Build it while you can.
@@missmoneypenny3303 Yup, FJB and Kamel Toe Harris!!
Wow, I am impressed with your Mustangs performance! Very good job on set-up and tuning- it's a testament to how valuable someone is that understands A/F ratio and timing, and how to mesh them with gearing selection can be to your cars overall drivability, longevity and HP output. I'd love to join you guys one day at your spot... I have an old Buick V6 that I surprise quite a few people with LOL, but being that I'm in South Florida... well, at least I can enjoy your YT channel and vids! Keep the awesome content coming, and would love to see that 'stang put under PSI too. Peace
And also an engine builder that builds you a stroker motor. He never mentions how big this “4.6” actually is.
What a beautiful powerful sound, you got to love it!!!! I wish I was in it feeling the pull!!!
I owned an 09 Roush 429R stage 3 and never thought, this car feels slow, but i did kenne bell it with a 2.3 positive displacement sc.. and dyno tuned it made 560whp.. honestly love that these are slept on because they are great platforms to build on..
Props on you son!!!! That is one hella fast 4.6 . I was very impressed. Very nice power pack you have in that 4.6 silver bullet. Keep up the speed. I can't wait to see it with the supercharger. Wow, that will be nuclear.
It’s not a 4.6 it’s a built stroker motor. He never says how big it actually is.
That t56 trans has been the best mod you have done to it post cams
I'll be honest, I was really surprised to see you beating both Coyotes and the SS. Really impressive. Keep up the good work and the awesome videos!
If 3v was automatic wouldn’t even been close the autos way faster
I have a 4.6l based engine that decimates....
I always tell everyone its a stock 4.6l 2v and laugh. Then ask how much they wanna win place their bets.
This engine dynoes over 600 hp and has a torque curve a pulling truck would be proud.
327 c.i. 13.5 to 1 comp ratio e85, custom gibtec pistons (head chambers are laser scanned) heads are trickflow 2v 195cc ported even more... Specs are mum...
Custom cams specced by me personally (i know a thing or two about induction) custom duel plenum intake built/designed by me. 4r75w trans 3800 stall converter... 4.10 gears, 9 inch aluminum housing and pumpkin... Carbon fiber hood and bumpers... Custom grill etc... 70 ford Maverick that weighs 2900ish with me in it. Has 2000era frt cobra brakes and hybrid crownvic/explorer rear disc i machined to use the better police crownvic rear rotors...
I've destroyed every N/A car ive ran for money.... 😂 It also has a dual stage nitros system. 175hp first hit, 2nd is 150hp. Im too scared to use it 🤣. It runs low 10s high 9s now.... Only a 6 point cage ... Subframe connectors etc... It's a blast
You’re racing from a roll..start at a dig and your feelings will get hurt
@@dariusowens1060 the 5 speed autos back then were not faster than the manuals with a good driver
@@sategllib2191 stock for stock maybe.
But with a couple of bolt-ons
Different story.
An amazing showcase of power and LOVE FOR A VEHICLE. The looks of this model Mustang are really something I miss from the new more-like-a-bar-of-soap models that have been issued in recent years. Great work, photography and diversity of engine type. Subbed and eager for more...
Wait so you like the ricer taillights on this car?
I need to make a road trip out there. This 3v actually moves. Impressive. I want some bad. Thing sounds great!
Gotta be rough dropping 15k in upgrades to pull a car length on a stock ls3 Camaro, enjoy the detailed vids and glad you enjoy the platform so much 👍🏻
You noticed that to I see, what a joke. Let me put my mustang that I did a lot of mods to up against stock cars with performance exhaust, my car is so bad ass. Again what a joke
@@charlestoole1789 What is wrong with modding a small displacement engine to compete with large displacement engines? Isn't that what rodding is all about? It cost me more to build an inline 6 than to build a V8 but I got a lot of satisfaction when I ran competitively against the V8's, especially when I beat some of them. Obviously you are the type to buy the fastest car available and then brag about how fast it is without having any mechanical talent of your own to contribute to the success of your car.
@@FRLN500 his last name is Toole. Because he’s a tool
He pulled that LS3 pretty hard and they are not exactly slow. Impressive given the 3v started so far behind 🤷
Another great video 💯
thank you man
Love what you've done here. That year is one of my favorite looking Stangs.
I don’t have the money/time to make my 3V fast, but like you, I love the look of the 05-09, especially when its clean & not overdone. My 06 is basically stock except for intake and o/r exhaust. So she may not be fast but she looks good & sounds even better ! Can’t wait to see you turbo results !
300hp is still considered quick lol
@@sneakerhead2261 300hp in a very lightweight vehicle maybe but not these Stangs. ESP the 300hp 4.6 in this generation of Mustang GTs, they were really slow. They didn’t pull hard. They fell on their face at high RPM. I gapped these 05-09 4.6 Mustangs all day in my 300hp 98-02 LS1 F-Bodies. Even my 95 Z28 LT1 with 275hp on paper pulled on these 4.6 GTs lol
@@speedracerjeff a tune and intake alone will wake the 05-09 gts up and they are actually pretty quick for what they are
@@speedracerjeff I still have my gear/tuned auto 3v, unbelievably great stoplight car. I love lining up with people like you that underestimate it. I left an LT1 so hard once he thought “it was a 5.0”, you’re full of shit
@@speedracerjeff if u think the 3v are slow the 2v's are worse lol
Great, great content, so nice you've tested these, very useful. So refreshing to see that much NA power squeezed in a 4.6L 3V. I'm in the exact path, love the s197 05-09 body, I didn't change any internal components yet. Only a few parts different from your build (mainly FRPP Cams and BBK LTH with Borla S-Type - I don't think any louder is accepted here in Quebec for street use). About to finish my winter work and turn the key to the see my results if I made mistakes or not. Did you noticed any parts in the lot that made a big jump in term of performance or it's more or less a linear process?
Very nice video. Extremely straight forward. Hands down one of the better Mustang video to say the least. Props.
ARTWORK
I totally agree that Mustang model is damn nice looking
Gears really do seem to wake up the 4.6, that’s one quick 3v
4.6's maybe a slog in performance, but I think that off displacement really makes the motor sound so unique and iconic.
Kinda reminds me how different and amazing the sound from the small rb26 is. Sounds heavenly when cammed and tuned!
Awesome video.
My coworker had a 4.6. it was stock. He would take me to lunch in it sometimes. I always enjoyed the way it sounded.
Sounds good but goes slow… I’d rather have power and performance lol
@@speedracerjeff if it slow but beat everything but the viper very interesting
@@ronaldtaylor6260 they’re all pretty slow lol my Benz would gap all of them including the Viper.
@@speedracerjeff Cap
The shorter rear gear helps a lot in these types of races, as long as you don't lose out too much shifting. Top speed will suffer with a shorter (numerically larger) rear gear ratio; this is clear in the race with the 19MY Mustang; the 19MY Mustang closes the gap at higher speeds where the 4.6L peters out. Nice work regardless.
Love how in-depth these videos are
