- Around 4,000 American XL bully owners have applied for exemption from the incoming ban on the breed in February 2024.
From 31 December all XL bullies must be kept on a lead and muzzled in public, while owners who do not wish to keep their dogs can have them euthanised and apply for compensation for the cost.
The ban was announced in September following a number of attacks involving the breed, and the exemption scheme was introduced for people who already owned XL bullies.
TalkTV's Peter Cardwell is joined by Niall Barnes, Head Trainer of NB Dog Training, and Lucy Beresford, psychotherapist, to discuss the ban that is set to take place next year.

A pet that can kill people if it doesn’t have a good owner doesn’t belong in society. We already know we can’t rely on their owners.
There's a reason people aren't allowed to keep pet lions, too.
*NO* DOG should be allowed by its owners to run the streets at large... no matter what's its size/breed. I do feel like any dog that's going to be in public needs to be on a leash, and be registered/licensed with proof of minimum vaccinations. I would go so far as to suggest that certain breeds with a propensity to aggressiveness have a form of liability insurance.
No dog is allowed to run the streets at large. They are all meant to be on lead in streets. I don't understand why people have a problem with muzzles. My dog wears a muzzle and is on lead even in places where they can be off lead. He's not even an aggressive breed, but he isn't keen on people or dogs, so for their safety, he wears a muzzle and is on lead. I don't know if he would bite, I don't want to find out. Simple
I have never seen pit owners ever ask for government to punish owners of dogs that attack unprovoked cause they know their dog will eventually attack.
Our safety is more important than these narcissistic/sociopath owners feelings.
My dog is a bully/boxer mix… not sure it applies but he is a 110 pound dog.
I had no experience with my dog before getting him as a puppy but I read a lot and looked many videos of dog trainers of Doberman and Rottweilers. It helped me a lot to educate my dog.
I exercise him twice per day, I give him a routine, around 20 commands that we train every day, dog day care a few times per year to socialize him and when he was a puppy I encouraged strangers to touch my dog.
A few times it happens, now that my dog is an adult, strangers giving kisses on his head, crazy people hahah, I wouldn’t ever do that to a stranger dog, but… that’s how well behaved he is.
Never attacked a person or a dog, but it got attacked a few times by other dogs and he didn’t go bezerk and separated him and calmed him.
I know it has guard instincts and I always keep that in mind of the breed , even how good he is.
You sir are a *responsible* dog owner with *common sense* . Unfortunately too many don't possess these traits and there is the problem.
@@baronedipiemonte3990this is the most important point.
Of course there are great XL owners BUT there are also many that are not and use the dog as a status, breed it to be violent or plane and simply are not able to put the time and effort into the dog.
The dog isn’t the issue, the people that own them in an irresponsible way that are 100% to blame.
Even with all of this, you're STILL not fully in control of your dog, and we as a society shouldn't have to pay the price.
@@VinnyCarwash-js8op I can’t control you either and you’re potentially a killer, what now?
These dogs should be banned in the Uk. However, those who have them now should be allowed to keep them, providing they have them muzzled and on a lead whenever out in public or when visitors come to their home. Just the size and weight of them is dangerous to kids and even adults, never mind if they attacked.
I agree, these people want these types of dogs as a show of power. And a lot of these people can't handle these dogs. Just take s a few to ruin it for every one else.
Not the beeed...always the owner
Absolutely yes! These dogs are demonised. Blame the owners.
Usually yes, not always. Dogs can have mental health issues just like humans. Bad traits etc. In a Jack Russell it's not dangerous. In a dog bred to kill, it is.
pitbulls weren't bred to kill it's like saying we should ban or kill the largest of humans because if they're raised wrong they can cause a lot of damage...blame the owner not the dog.@@kevinb9830
Isn't that what they are doing? Basically requiring owners of these dogs to take adequate measures to keep the Public safe. And banning breeding and sales...seems legit to me. They aren't banning the dogs, just require extra measures to have one.

Wish they also banned the Staffordshire bull terrier. Bloodsport dogs just aren't pets.

Belgian malanois and rottweilers are worser
It is absurd and prejudice to assume any breed is a bad breed. Chihuahuas do more damage than all the bullies put together, but no one is banning those little beasts!
Because the damage is different
of course they don't ffs. One death is worse than a million nips.

No one is banning these dogs except for breeding, sale, roaming or exchange. The dogs must be kept on lead which is what every dog should require. Please read: From 31 December all XL Bully type dogs must be kept on a lead and muzzled in public. It will also be illegal from this date to breed, sell, advertise, gift, exchange, and abandon these dogs or let them stray. UK Chief Vet urges owners to take all necessary steps to ensure they are complying with the law
