So much crime happens as a result of unlocked doors, especially garage entry. Thank you, and you're right. People generally will opt for ease over security.
Followed my eldest last night to our home in a rental car and he drove around the block twice making sure he lost me before parking in front of our home when I asked him why he did that, his reply made me very proud, “You don’t let yourself be followed all the way home!” Better to be weary than to be wounded 🙏🏻
Just last week a friend's daughter had a man try to open her car door while she was stopped at a red light. She had the doors locked and was able to drive away but it could have ended up very badly.
It’s not a lack common sense that causes this. It’s just that good people who have never been exposed to violence don’t understand how bad people think and act. Great video. Be safe
Common sense is a flower that does not grow in everyone's garden. Also replace the screws in the strike plate of your deadbolt with 3 inch screws to make it more secure.
Great upload. Been after my parents for almost 8 months about security protocol. I dropped in on them this afternoon and had to use my key to the bolt. Felt like I had won the lottery.
Simple and good advice. I would add that if you’re a woman, don’t leave your purse on the seat. You might even consider running the seatbelt on the passenger seat through the shoulder strap if you’re alone. Also lock your doors when you’re getting fuel at the pump. Thieves are pulling up next to cars, opening the passenger door, grab the purse, and drive away. Victims don’t even know it’s happening until they get back in the car and their purse is gone.
Man or woman ,young or old NEVER SHOW OFF YOUR WEALTH . When you show off your wealth you're advertising to everybody you have something worth stealing .
1990 in downtown Austin Texas. I am parking and going in the court house. I had an old pickup with no AC. 100 degrees in the shade. Windows down, doors unlocked. I stop and a drunk fella jumps in the passenger seat. He says he wants to go to third street and red river. I tell him, “brother, this ain’t a taxi, please get out”. You can imagine what happens next. Some crazy dialogue, me opening the door and eventually pushing him out with my foot. No, I did NOT kick him. Anyway, he then got back in. We repeated the same steps, in about the same order. Finally, I get him out and he toddles away. I get out, and there are six cops watching and laughing so hard one of them is literally on the ground. I was not amused. As I walk by I said “protect and serve huh”? They laughed even harder. I have always locked my truck doors ever since.
My careless younger brother got robbed in Waco, Tx. Left the doors unlocked to his 4 door. Guy jumped into the back seat, stuck a knife to his neck and said "drive". Luckily he was only robbed and lived to tell about it. Intoxicated or mentally ill people can walk into your home if the door is unlocked too. We lock our doors just walking to the driveway or mail box.
Sound advice right there; you wouldn’t believe how many people I talk to who don’t seem to feel the need to lock their doors of their home; like you said, it can give you a few moments to prepare or arm yourself if someone is trying to forcefully enter your home. Car doors, same thing; thankfully a number of newer vehicles are coming standard with the option that as soon as you shift into drive all doors will automatically lock, great feature. Thanks for the video.
Life saving advice. Some vehicles autolock & unlock. To prevent auto unlock on key operated vehicles, try shutting off engine with vehicle in gear (foot on brake). Then put in Park. Your doors should still be locked until you use inside door handle.
New sub here. Glad you came across my feed. Very useful, practical, interesting content we really need to hear and re-hear... Thank you for sharing your safety knowledge.
Sign of the sharply declining times. When I was a kid, we never locked our house door during the day. Somewhere in the mid-80s, we began to keep doors locked.
As soon as I open the door, I lock it. Then I get in and close it. Before I open the door to get out, I prepare myself. I'm also "prepared" before I approach an ATM. At parking lots, I always circle before I park, making certain not to park next to another vehicle. My head is on a swivel as I walk across parking lots. One hand is in my pocket, for obvious reasons. I try as much as possible to make myself a difficult target. Safety and security are an illusion. 😮
Totally Agree - Newer model cars can be programmed to lock the doors, automatically, when started or put in gear. Can also be programmed to unlock automatically or manually. I also manually lock mine as well. I also turn off my garage door opener at night, in case someone were to break a window on a vehicle and access the garage door opener. We also turn off when we leave town.
When I was in my twenties, I took a free class conducted on safety by a Policeman. One can never be too cautious when it comes to your safety. I love hearing these tips, even though I practice them all the time.
Most new/recent vehicles doors lock automatically at a relatively low speed. But I've been training myself to manually lock the doors as soon as I get in. This is when I am probably the most likely to have an issue. Additionally we set the auto door locks to just unlock the driver side door with the first click of the key button and two clicks to unlock all doors. According to Tom Givens 40% of all robberies occur at the car/personal vehicle. I suspect this includes at the filing stations as well.
If you have a somewhat modern vehicle, make sure you program the remote to unlock only the driver side on the first press of the key. Also lock the vehicle as soon as you get in. A quick walk around our vehicles prior to getting in, also isn’t a bad idea unless you’re in a shady area. It has saved me a few times from things like, someone placing a sharp object in front of the tires or someone placing the tailgate down. Just food for thought.
these are good reminders, my home doors are always locked and my vehicle autolocks on a roll but usually I do it before the vehicle does, sometimes I double lock just cause I forgot I already did it, better safe than sorry.
Two of the smartest things I've heard all week. When I'm in my home or when I leave my home it's locked up and when I'm in my pickup truck my doors are always locked on matter if I'm in or out of my truck. 👍👍👍
You would think it's that simple yet I know plenty especially in my own family that don't do this. My step dad thinks I'm crazy for caring more about locking my house when I'm home with family. He doesn't understand that I care more for people than my property. Stay locked my friend!
VERY GOOD ADVICE!! I always locked my house up growing up... at one time, I lived in another "small town" ... where HARDLY ANYONE LOCKED THEIR HOUSES UP! WHEN I first moved there, I had people OPEN the front door and say, "Anybody home?" 😮 After the first two times, one of which I'd just gotten outa the shower 🚿, I started LOCKING all our doors... Then, for the first while, SOME people got UPSET because they couldn't just open our doors!! I had to talk to my husband, and he supported me, and we told people how we don't want people to just COME IN without US LETTING them in, IF we so desired... For a while, we were the "paranoid" people😊... THEN, an elderly woman in that community was abducted and taken to the foothills and sexually assaulted and died. 😢 EVEN AFTER THAT, the people in that community left their doors unlocked! We now live in a small village, where SOME people still leave their homes and vehicles unlocked... There have been stolen trucks taken and later found trashed... A few YEARS AGO, someone forgot to lock our vehicle and we got inside the next day, and "things weren't right"... We realized that someone had been looking for loose change, etc... but thankfully did not more damage...Many other "villagers" reported things happeningto them which were worse... Like you said, we no longer leave our doors unlocked allowing someone to just WALK IN. THANKS😊
I couldn't agree with you more! I always lock the doors of my house, even when I'm home. My wife and I live in a very safe and for the most part a very crime free neighborhood. But still, I always lock the doors. The problem is my wife doesn't! I'll come home from work and she'll go out and leave the front door open all day. I tell her over and over again to LOCK the doors! I'm also the same with the car as well. So thank you for your videos! I'm going to show her this one!
Great advice, I've also taken to carrying a powerful small flashlight,, these are cheap now, and produce an incredible blinding light, (compared to a torch from a few years ago.), You can keep an even more powerful medium sized flashlight in your car,, it's worth every penny, just for peace of mind,, ( I recommend the Sofirn Sc33,,)
I have seen videos of people just turning the doorknob, and if it was locked, they moved on. They did not even try to push on the door. A locked door was enough of a deterrent. Another thing...Sheriff Judd in Florida shows videos of thieves taking guns out of unlocked cars. A truck/car gun is not meant to stay in it, especially in an urban environment!
I live in an apartment. We used to have neighbors who had inebriated guests over. They'd forget where their friends' apartment was and try all the doors. My next-door neighbor was sitting on the couch in his underwear, watching his TV when the door opened. It was a drunk college student. Let's just say they were both surprised. 😂
Especially where I live. We're rural and people here are used to very low crime. But the times they are a changing. Another tip is no stickers on my car. Every single one of my friends who have hunting club stickers or stickers of they're favorite gun or political have all had they're cars / trucks broken into and they're stuff stolen.
Excellent! Keep your car doors locked especially when at a service station filling your tank, it's been seen that others will open your opposite door and steal your stuff inside, be alert. Also avoid gassing up at night in shitty areas!
I always lock both. And got my wife doing it too. She was good with the house but lacked with the car doors. Not anymore. Got my sister doing it too, as soon as she gets in the car!
I agree with you whole heartedly. I live in an apartment building and I have neighbors that leave their apartment door unlocked. They even prop the door open for some God forsaken reason, especially in the summer time. I worry about their safety, and my own safety because of that conduct. As I am typing this I could literally get up walk out of my apartment over to their door, turn the knob and walk into their apartment. It is senseless.
I’m surprised how many people don’t do this even at night. Growing up in a rural area I remember leaving them unlocked during the day but they were always locked at night. Now in a more urban area they are always locked. The minute I get in it’s the first thing I do.
Great video. It's so easy to for get to lock doors. Also as far as your vehicle. Don't leave any thing of value in the ope where others can see it. If you have a truck gun/fore arm in your vehicle make sure it's not visible and locked up. And in a place where only you know where it is.
Thank you so much for your great advice, trully appreciated. yrs ago my brother inlaw had his front door open and there was 3 jail men escaped and asked him to give them a lift and drop them off on a long Rd they said we know where you live and you have a wife and family will come and get you so don't ring the police close call!!!!!
Amen!! My spouse laughed at me because i lock my truck and car when i get out of it AND if i leave my cabin for walk or to the barn that bad boys gonna be LOCKED!!! And its locked when im home too unless hes there with me. Nope not takin chances. Great advice wise sir!!!
I’ve been telling ordinary people and close friends as soon as you get into your car lock the door forget about the cell phone forget about going through your handbag lock the door if you’re going shopping pay attention when you walk into your car before you get in make sure you take a quick look around to see who is around Try not to go anywhere with both hands full with bags, especially shopping this time of the year and definitely have to lock your home. Use 3 inch screws for your doors.
I am OCD about locked doors... okay, about a kit of things. I also am always telling people to never stand in the door looking out. 1st, you're making yourself an easy target, 2nd your are totally in the way of a person needing to get in or out in an emergency. Logic!! ❤❤
Just recently and for the first time I went to go to an appointment and went to go park in the lot of this facility and I had glanced over noticing some strange guy walking around aimlessly and didn't think much of it and made sure I locked my doors except this was a new truck and I was unaware of the back door not locking properly and went in did what I needed to then got back in my truck and the dude I'd seen from earlier was laying down in the backseat of my truck!
When I was younger (and undoubtedly dumber), I would leave the car doors unlocked at the gas station while I walked inside to pay the cashier clerk. And while at the counter, I'd actually keep an eye on the vehicle, as if that would've granted me enough time to thwart a robbery. 🤭
If you know and do it, it´s obvious. A short reminder to those who do can´t hurt. My car has an autolock with a manual override to allow passengers to enter on my disgression. In Europe many houses and flats require a key to enter even when not locked. Some people start locking the door of their house after they see how quickly it can be bypassed. A buddy asked me to make a bypass demo to make his wife feel safe. The time for the bypass was on par with the use of a key. Wife insists on locking now. Maybe one thing to add: When you lock your car door via RC, check if it actually is locked. The radio signal can be jammed with cheap walkie talkies. On occassion this flaw has been used to prevent locking the car and steal from it after the owner left.
Another thing to remember is your digital house key pad probably isn't as secure as you think. Watch lock picking lawyer 😂 most can be opened with a magnet. Digital keypads are the worst. Also remember on those keypads the numbers wear down over a short time period from the same number buttons being used so it's not really hard to figure out what your code is.
I have seen so many videos of people being pulled out of the cars just because the door isn't locked. When i'm in my vehicle , the doors are always locked immediately no matter where I am. .
When i drive into my garage i wait unti the door is all the way down before i turn off my car and get out. Someone can approach you garage and put their foot in front of the sensor that causes the garage door to automatically go up again. If you have gotten out of your car, you are vulnerable.
It’s unfortunate that you have to remind people to do this. But it’s the truth we always lock down our House and the trucks ,vehicles and we live in the middle of nowhere. Stay safe, my friend.
My wife has a secluded week end ranch house, forty miles from nowhere. It has always alarmed me. We are one hour from help, and it is as vulnerable as a deserted highway rest stop in my opinion. I usually stay up all night in bed, and sleep in the daylight.
I even have a door lock guard on my balcony door, which people think is nuts. But recently, a burglar got into someone's condo via the balcony door. He paid the price though, and will never do that again.
@@tommeblue5967 thank you so much! one thing I will say is that there is always a measure of being approached in a rough neighborhood. The next thing I would say is it depends on what you’re willing to carry for protection. I think pepper spray is a good every day carry for everyone. I of course, carry a firearm as well for high level threats . Another great protection tool is something to pierce with in close quarters. Most importantly, if there’s a time of day where there’s less shenanigans going on, I would walk at that time.
Lock your doors when you are out doing yard work or other things around the house. Someone could slip in without you seeing them. My neighbor had a stranger slip up on him while he was out in the yard on a sunny Sunday afternoon. He had to call the law on him.
I have a nephew who was born in a barn and I am constantly reminding him lock the door, now he remembers to lock the door just so that he doesn't need to hear me squawking about lock the door. XD
At my workplace we keep all ground floor doors locked 24/7 and passersby just try to pull open the doors 🚪 until they set off alarms . Some go ape sh@@@ literally jump on doors trying to break them .
Park beside the cart corral allows you better visibility to look around before you get out and a large van wont be parked at you door when you come back.
Common sense isn't common any more. Great video, brother!
100%
If it was common everyone would have it
I always keep my house and car doors locked. I’ve seen too many bad things to be casual about my safety.

I used to never lock my car doors when I drove. Now it's the first thing I do when I get in
That’s crazy I’ve always done it. It also helps keep your doors closed if you ever roll over.
I only worry about locking it once I am in. It's a scary world people. Watch your surroundings all the time.

I honestly never thought of locking my car doors while I'm actually in the car until I watched this. Counting myself lucky.

Right on!
Thank you
The picture of the dog in this comment was fully trained no one ever came in my house uninvited

Good doggo!
Alot of people think nothing will happen to them they get complacent 💔
Good sound advise
Good stuff thanks
I even locked the door to my house after I have let someone in. They asked me why and they just don't understand
When i'm in my vehicle , the doors are always locked immediately no matter where I am.
.
My brother thinks it’s paranoid and uncool to lock up your house and then people went into his garage and stole stuff.
When i drive into my garage i wait unti the door is all the way down before i turn off my car and get out. Someone can approach you garage and put their foot in front of the sensor that causes the garage door to automatically go up again. If you have gotten out of your car, you are vulnerable.
My brother never locks the door of his house so I stopped going over there.
My family gets a kick out of me. I’ll just get up and go casually lock the door lol
It’s unfortunate that you have to remind people to do this. But it’s the truth we always lock down our House and the trucks ,vehicles and we live in the middle of nowhere. Stay safe, my friend.
You as well!
My wife has a secluded week end ranch house, forty miles from nowhere. It has always alarmed me. We are one hour from help, and it is as vulnerable as a deserted highway rest stop in my opinion. I usually stay up all night in bed, and sleep in the daylight.
I’ve always stressed the point of keeping all doors locked regardless. Vehicles are always locked as well, despite being far off the beaten path.
Absolutely brilliant advice. I’m ex army I do these automatically
I've been insisting the driver of a car that I am in to lock the doors, doing that for 40 years.
I even have a door lock guard on my balcony door, which people think is nuts. But recently, a burglar got into someone's condo via the balcony door. He paid the price though, and will never do that again.
Hi! I love your videos. Do you have any advice for staying safe while strolling my elderly dog in my rough neighborhood?
@@tommeblue5967 thank you so much! one thing I will say is that there is always a measure of being approached in a rough neighborhood. The next thing I would say is it depends on what you’re willing to carry for protection. I think pepper spray is a good every day carry for everyone. I of course, carry a firearm as well for high level threats . Another great protection tool is something to pierce with in close quarters. Most importantly, if there’s a time of day where there’s less shenanigans going on, I would walk at that time.
@@411OutdoorsThank you so much, I'll do these things now!

If it’s not locked it’s not secure is my mantra.
He is awesome
Who is driving around with unlocked doors?😅
You’d be shocked. Many locks today will do it automatically, but if you get somewhere and sit they will unlock. Mine do
"Lock your car doors" *laughs in topless/doorless Jeep*
😂
Both of our vehicles lock automatically when I'm driving. I keep our house doors locked too.
2:26 sound effect scared tf out of me watching this in the dark with AirPods on 😂😂😂
😂👍
Park beside the cart corral allows you better visibility to look around before you get out and a large van wont be parked at you door when you come back.
Common sense. Thanks
