Regarding the subject of Hillary helping too much or not enough. I find it very interesting that people feel the need to apply their social norms to others lives. This platform is a very interesting study in sociology. I sure hope its not doing more harm than good. Lot of information available, but I'm from a generation where information was earned, not given, so it's odd to me. I think it changes a creators mentality in uncomfortable ways as well. Sure, I soak up the entertainment just like others. I've tried to evolve my interaction to just being passive though. I don't even know why I'm compelled to comment, besides the algorithm wants to learn more about humans from our relatively pointless contributions. We need to pay closer attention to this thing, in my humble opinion. It's information gathering at its core, and I don't appreciate being a Guinea pig, to be honest. That said...have a great day! Hi J C, I think I'm with you. I am suspicious of what social media is doing to the way people interact with each other. I guess that's a funny thing for someone in my position to say, but that's what I believe. I see lots of people yelling at each other on social media who would be more inclined to find common ground if they were speaking to each other in person.

Interesting point about knowledge being earned rather than given. I've never heard it said that way. It's a double edge sword. It allows people to learn quicker if they want to but also allows people who just want a shortcut to the answer to do that as well.
@@NoPlanProjects I think access to unlimited knowledge is a dangerous thing, the younger the user, the more dangerous. There are schools of thought addressing this issue. Many unforeseen consequences across a society. There are some that believe the drawbacks far outweigh any benefits. I don't believe the consequences have even begun to be realized. This is a deep dive philosophically, and most people don't give it a second thought. I suggest everyone watch "Social Dilemma". That documentary is a good introduction to this subject.
My dad said the day he met my mom’s mother, she was changing a flat tire on the dump truck. Grandpa was busy on the road grader or loader and trying to get one more load of rock scraped out onto the bank of the river before it rained. That was their business, selling and delivering rock to customers in town. There was no one else to change the tire. And I have you know when she was in her 80’s she still mowed her lawn, worked on her mower if it needed it, changed the oil in her car and did light maintenance on it. She also made shirts for customers in our town for 50 years, fixed her sewing machine if it needed it, grew a great garden every year, canned everything, taught me how to sew and make quilts and do all of it too…it makes me tired just talking about it! You and Hilarie don’t pay any attention to negative posts. There’s a lot of unhappy people in the world. Thanks for sharing!

My grandma managed the farm while grandpa worked off the farm on WPA projects. It was the only way they could survive. This meant she birthed 7 kids, tended the fields, the garden and the livestock. So yes, a woman can do whatever she sets her mind to. Respect to Hilarie. My grandma and others paved the way for her. ❤️
There’s a proverb about removing the log in your own eye before removing the splinter in someone else’s eye. We can speak into each other’s lives when it’s warranted/ requested/ appropriate but there first needs to be a very close personal relationship so that the advise or wisdom given can be received. TH-cam is not a substitute for that. I watch, I’m entertained and occasionally, I learn something that I can apply to my life. My Mom drove tractors, worked a garden, made food, worked animals with us ect. Hillary is right women have been doing thus for hundreds of years. Ps. Mom is 93 and still lives on the farm!

HI there Pete. Yay....I have a name sake Dexter..."Marty". I couldn't agree more about Woman and farming. Farming was and is the backbone that gave NZ the liifestyle it now enjoys IMO. I had a great friend affectionately known as "Nan Anderson". She was raised on a farm, rose at 5.00am, fed the chickens, collected the eggs, fed the pigs, milked the cows, had breakfast and rode a horse to school. She passed away in 2002 at 102yrs old. Where would NZ be now without such foundational people like her? RIP Nan.

My parents always raised me saying "Anyone can do anything or ANY job they want in life. All they have to do is work hard and do it right. And NO ONE should ever stop someone from doing what makes them happy." My parents were forward thinking when raising us. And I tell my kids the same as my parents did. Love the "work builds character"has ring true since the start of time. Proudest I've ever been of myself is from a har worked job that I saw the results at the end.

I was wanting to get a few feeder pigs to raise for us and to sell. However, my husband told me he won’t do anything to help me with them so I’m on my own if I get them. I made up my mind I am more than happy to do the work myself. I have 14 Dexter cattle and 8 Nigerian dwarf goats, what’s a couple pigs? I went out to start working on a fence yesterday and tripped over his junk on the floor with my broken foot and fell hard on the cement on my good knee. So I guess my dreams are done with that idea. As the saying goes, “where there’s a will there’s a way”. I discussed the idea of raising the pigs with my son. He’s been amazing helping me with chores since I broke my foot as it is. He’s going to buy a pig too, help me with chores and the work, and then he gets the money when it’s butchered. I remembered my dad doing that with us years ago. I sure have a great kid!!! 🥰 🐖 🥓😂
The world has always had folks that thought their mission in life was telling others how to live. The modern problem is with the internet, it isn't just the nosy neighbor anymore....but folks that reach out across the globe to manage your life. As for a wife working on the farm, what do people think she should be doing? Family farms need families to operate. I don't think there was ever a time in an agricultural community where every able body person didn't worked at it regardless of gender.

Just found your channel yesterday - I like you two! You & your operation remind me of growing up on the farm where, yes, Mom helped Dad (so did all of us kids, it was not optional!) - but there were seven of us kids & no farmers markets back then, so Dad worked off-farm too, and if crops were poor or prices were down, Mom worked off-farm as well. By many, maybe most, people's standards we were poor - but we always had a roof over our heads, clothes on our back, food in our bellies - and we NEVER doubted our parents loved us. I'm in my 60s now so I don't think I could manage that work any more, but I do miss country life, and I really miss my folks. Thanks for bringing back GREAT memories!!!
My favorite saying is if they don't pay your bills, don't put food on your table, and don't put a roof over your head, their opinion means squat. I was a single parent for 20 years and I would have gone insane if I listened to what everyone else said. I did make my kids do chores. However, they also were rewarded to do so. Just like working at a job.. exchanging time for $$ or whatever they wanted. We were also heavily involved in 4-H, so there were plenty of opportunities for doing community service as well. Only 1 out of the 3 kids, so far s I have continued on in animals. She became a Licensed Vet Tech and has 4 horses that she shows. My Oldest manages a team of remote computer repair technicians, and my youngest isn't out of high school yet, and not sure of the direction he wants to go, but he helps out (he actually likes turkeys- he raised one that dressed at 38.5 lbs.). So even though they all didn't stay in animals, they all were taught how to garden, cook, sew, and fish should the needs arise. My personal opinion is that we have too much technology and not enough hands-on opportunities for the kids at a young age. They are forgetting about the basics of actual life and how to live.
To your entire family: you are role models. Not exclusively, certainly. But, you seem to exemplify a thoughtful, measured engagement with the world. That is meaningful even for someone in the densest urban environment.
An opportunity came up for me 1 year ago, to buy 9.3 acres with an old 1850's farm house. It has been one of the best decisions of my life so far. Its really just a happy home place, we are dabbling in homesteading but its probably never going to be big enough or profitable enough to live off of as a farm. Thank you for honesty with what your life is. It helps me to understand the potential or lack thereof in my life. I also have a 3 year old daughter and your comments about children in this video help clarify some things for me. So thank you. Also, I appreciate that your videos are just the right balance of vlog / edited content.

Another great video and very informative. Farming is America's truest tradition and the hardships are rewarding. Wish I could have started farming right out of high school but the U.S. Army got me in a draft notice, 1970. I saw how farming was done in Vietnam as rice is their staple. They are a hard working people and complete families work the farm. To bad communism came to them, now the government owns their farm. Profits are the government's profit and farmer is left with muscle pains and dinner.
AGREED. I applaud you for being so brave in sharing your experience with the public. There are mean people everywhere on this planet. If we can can sleep at night knowing that we have done the right thing by our family and friends, well that's not a bad days work. Keep up the good work, Our family are big fans.

I enjoy watching this channel and have been for a little over a year. I've learned things I can do differently with growing my own beef. Also, the farm I have is something my wife and I both do work on aside from our 50 to 60 hours work weeks. We bale our own small squares for feed, and we raise our children on our farm as well. Hard work pays off, and we are hoping our kids even though very young, will learn what responsibility is all about, and that hard work pays off for what you want out of life.
There have been a few TH-cam channels saying they are getting too much rain. I bet there are folks in other parts of the country or the world that wish you could send some their way. Keep up the good work Hilary. My grandmother was one of nine and they only had two boys. She had to work out in the field and most of the men were afraid to work near her because she could throw down with the best of them.

Man I'm the complete opposite i was in Puerto Rico and went to school in the states i honestly couldn't wait to go back to pr after i graduated. As soon as I finished highschool i came back down here and I'm carrying on my grandfathers legacy. Your kids may not like the farm but your grandkids will for sure enjoy it.

My wife grew up on a farm and we have a small flock of 14 sheep and 30 laying hens, we are currently in Ma. I retired from the fire dept and have a modest pension from that and a small military pension. We plan on selling our 1.3 acres here and buy a small farm in kentucky with about 20 acres. We hope to have a few Dexters for our own meat and a larger sheep flock. Your video’s have been very informative and enjoyable to watch. We can’t get enough. Hey Pete! I came across your videos a couple of weeks ago and love them. I grew up in Lancaster County, though not on a farm. My step grandfather farmed near a little town called Lemasters in central PA.; a farm much like yours. When I was growing up farmers had either a Farmall or a John Deere-although my grandpa had a Massey Harris, which he loved. He actually passed away on it. What a way to go! Pete, you cannot imagine my surprise when I learned that you all are near Ithaca. Our daughter and son-in-law live in Ithaca. He went to IC, and they have recently discovered the Farmers' Market. I sent her your recent video describing it and your work there. I have so much respect for the work you and Hilary do and just wanted to thank you for it- and recall this bit of wisdom you've probably heard: "God gave us two ears and one mouth for a reason." We bought a pasture raised turkey from the farmer we support for the first time last year and it was, hands down, the best Thanksgiving turkey we have ever had. We will never go back to the grocery store turkeys!
I'm 71 and grew up in the middle of the San Fernando Valley, CA. When I was young, it was 1 mile squares of corn fields and citrus orchards scattered here and there between the track housing. . However, I knew nothing about how the crops were worked. My only interaction was to take an ear of corn from the closest field and eat it raw with my neighborhood buddy. Sorry for the theft, but I never thought of it that way when I was 8 years old. Also, you couldn't venture far away from Victory Bulvd. on the North side or you could become totally lost. No sound of the cars and 6 ft tall corn stalks with 4.5 ft kids makes for a kid trap. Scarry. I can't really say why, but I am addicted to you two. I consider you two to be my friends. Great farm wisdom for life. Thanks for the soothing entertainment.
My grandma is 70 now and she has always helped out on the farm (she runs it because my grandpa deid of cancer before I was born and my family used to run around 200ac)
I enjoy all of your vidios, but really liked this one where you talk about the kids. I love the way you respect them and protect them. It is good to know they help you at this point but you respect the fact they may not carry on with the farm. You both are wonderful people and parents.

The farm dad bought in 1971 had been a dairy. Where the girls walked to the barn was very compacted. I plowed it up to plant corn in the pasture and it was like hitting the brakes when you hit the path.
In the 1960's I grew up on a diversified 960-acre farm. Making a living from a small sized farm takes a lot of skill and reliable economic partnership with a spouse. I think its good your children are not pushed into more intensive daily chore routines. They seem to enjoy working with their parents and ready to take on the world.

I like your idea about keeping the kids apart from TH-cam, people are so mean and hurtful and that will affect a lot of young people. They don't need to be subjected to that at a young age. The way your treat your animals has a lot to say about a man's character. The knowledge you have of small things about farming is awesome and priceless.
Ask Hillary if she would like you to put in a big door at the end of the winter chicken house so you can get a used small skid loader in the chicken house and clean it out in a matter of hours instead of days and reduce or alleviate the use of her using a scoop shovel.
Thanks for the comments about the kids. I used their help at my woodworking business sparingly. I took advantage of self employment to be part of their activities. My kids have succeeded nicely and maybe my wife and I just concentrated on values. Seems like that's what's happening at your place
Although I had to do many things on the farm that I didn't enjoy, when I was growing up, it certainly didn't deter me from enjoying farming later in life, and I still have to do things that I don't enjoy.
I love what you are all doing working and farming together. I come from very very deep farming roots on both sides of my family. My mother's father's parents had a farm for a long time, she kept a huge kitchen garden after they retired off the farm up into her 90's. My Father's parents are in their 90's and still own the farm. She worked the egg production house, milked, well everything over the years. There is an old picture of her mother as a child and probably her mother and some of the other women in the family working out in the fields on threshing day. Women have and can farm same as a man. It's a team effort. But also agree it cant be forced. My father grew tired of the pressure and got out of the farm partnership when I was a kid. I'd like to get into farming. But my 6 yr old daughter has no interest in working on a farm right now. So I dont push it on her. Love what you do and what you stand and strive for. Thank you.
I understand your comment about not forcing your kids into the farm. I was a farm kid that couldn't wait to get away from it. It took about 15 years of working other jobs to want to farm.
I grew up with a single mother (divorced at an early age) and the only way myself and my siblings could buy things for ourselves (watches etc) was work. This stood us in good stead later in life as too many people just don't know how to (work), so, the best thing you can do for your children is teach them that hard work gets you where you want to go in life. Parents that don't even get their kids to do chores and give them pocket money for nothing are sabotaging their later life. And "yes" I came from a farming background also.

There’s a proverb about removing the log in your own eye before removing the splinter in someone else’s eye. We can speak into each other’s lives when it’s warranted/ requested/ appropriate but there first needs to be a very close personal relationship so that the advise or wisdom given can be received. TH-cam is not a substitute for that. I watch, I’m entertained and occasionally, I learn something that I can apply to my life. Thanks Pete for the videos and for persevering through the “you shoulda, coulda, woulda dones.” From my arm chair here, you’re living a rich life and thank you for sharing.

Pete, I love the farm videos with you and Hillary. I grew up on a farm, and moved away when I went to college. Now, at age 65, I have much more of an appreciation of farmers and the farm life. Thank you for allowing me to live vicariously through your, and Hillary’s efforts. Thank you.

Pete, you and Hillary make a great team who have complete understanding between the two of you as working partners on the farm, Hillary in the house (I just have not seen you cooking in the kitchen that much, Pete!) and raising your children together as responsible parents who are setting good examples for them. Just do not pay any attention to Naysayers! They will always be there to point out something negative in a cryptic manner. Shove them out of your mind and rest easy with knowing you have a wonderful family for whom you are working very hard! I would tip my hat to you guys were I a man (which I am not!). HI there Pete. Yay....I have a name sake Dexter..."Marty". I couldn't agree more about Woman and farming. Farming was and is the backbone that gave NZ the liifestyle it now enjoys IMO. I had a great friend affectionately known as "Nan Anderson". She was raised on a farm, rose at 5.00am, fed the chickens, collected the eggs, fed the pigs, milked the cows, had breakfast and rode a horse to school. She passed away in 2002 at 102yrs old. Where would NZ be now without such foundational people like her? RIP Nan.
Nice to see mud and manure on a farm. A lot of TH-camrs make farming look like modeling, all pretty and clean and nice smelling. It's hard dirty work. Rewarding yes, but real work. Thank you.

I was wanting to get a few feeder pigs to raise for us and to sell. However, my husband told me he won’t do anything to help me with them so I’m on my own if I get them. I made up my mind I am more than happy to do the work myself. I have 14 Dexter cattle and 8 Nigerian dwarf goats, what’s a couple pigs? I went out to start working on a fence yesterday and tripped over his junk on the floor with my broken foot and fell hard on the cement on my good knee. So I guess my dreams are done with that idea. As the saying goes, “where there’s a will there’s a way”. I discussed the idea of raising the pigs with my son. He’s been amazing helping me with chores since I broke my foot as it is. He’s going to buy a pig too, help me with chores and the work, and then he gets the money when it’s butchered. I remembered my dad doing that with us years ago. I sure have a great kid!!! 🥰 🐖 🥓😂
The world has always had folks that thought their mission in life was telling others how to live. The modern problem is with the internet, it isn't just the nosy neighbor anymore....but folks that reach out across the globe to manage your life. As for a wife working on the farm, what do people think she should be doing? Family farms need families to operate. I don't think there was ever a time in an agricultural community where every able body person didn't worked at it regardless of gender.

Just found your channel yesterday - I like you two! You & your operation remind me of growing up on the farm where, yes, Mom helped Dad (so did all of us kids, it was not optional!) - but there were seven of us kids & no farmers markets back then, so Dad worked off-farm too, and if crops were poor or prices were down, Mom worked off-farm as well. By many, maybe most, people's standards we were poor - but we always had a roof over our heads, clothes on our back, food in our bellies - and we NEVER doubted our parents loved us. I'm in my 60s now so I don't think I could manage that work any more, but I do miss country life, and I really miss my folks. Thanks for bringing back GREAT memories!!!

Down here in south Alabama we have lost our entire garden to over watering. Nothing we could really do when we see 6+ inches of rain in a day
My favorite saying is if they don't pay your bills, don't put food on your table, and don't put a roof over your head, their opinion means squat. I was a single parent for 20 years and I would have gone insane if I listened to what everyone else said. I did make my kids do chores. However, they also were rewarded to do so. Just like working at a job.. exchanging time for $$ or whatever they wanted. We were also heavily involved in 4-H, so there were plenty of opportunities for doing community service as well. Only 1 out of the 3 kids, so far s I have continued on in animals. She became a Licensed Vet Tech and has 4 horses that she shows. My Oldest manages a team of remote computer repair technicians, and my youngest isn't out of high school yet, and not sure of the direction he wants to go, but he helps out (he actually likes turkeys- he raised one that dressed at 38.5 lbs.). So even though they all didn't stay in animals, they all were taught how to garden, cook, sew, and fish should the needs arise. My personal opinion is that we have too much technology and not enough hands-on opportunities for the kids at a young age. They are forgetting about the basics of actual life and how to live.
To your entire family: you are role models. Not exclusively, certainly. But, you seem to exemplify a thoughtful, measured engagement with the world. That is meaningful even for someone in the densest urban environment.
An opportunity came up for me 1 year ago, to buy 9.3 acres with an old 1850's farm house. It has been one of the best decisions of my life so far. Its really just a happy home place, we are dabbling in homesteading but its probably never going to be big enough or profitable enough to live off of as a farm. Thank you for honesty with what your life is. It helps me to understand the potential or lack thereof in my life. I also have a 3 year old daughter and your comments about children in this video help clarify some things for me. So thank you. Also, I appreciate that your videos are just the right balance of vlog / edited content.

Another great video and very informative. Farming is America's truest tradition and the hardships are rewarding. Wish I could have started farming right out of high school but the U.S. Army got me in a draft notice, 1970. I saw how farming was done in Vietnam as rice is their staple. They are a hard working people and complete families work the farm. To bad communism came to them, now the government owns their farm. Profits are the government's profit and farmer is left with muscle pains and dinner.

I enjoy watching this channel and have been for a little over a year. I've learned things I can do differently with growing my own beef. Also, the farm I have is something my wife and I both do work on aside from our 50 to 60 hours work weeks. We bale our own small squares for feed, and we raise our children on our farm as well. Hard work pays off, and we are hoping our kids even though very young, will learn what responsibility is all about, and that hard work pays off for what you want out of life.

Keep up the good work Hilary. My grandmother was one of nine and they only had two boys. She had to work out in the field and most of the men were afraid to work near her because she could throw down with the best of them.

Man I'm the complete opposite i was in Puerto Rico and went to school in the states i honestly couldn't wait to go back to pr after i graduated. As soon as I finished highschool i came back down here and I'm carrying on my grandfathers legacy. Your kids may not like the farm but your grandkids will for sure enjoy it.

My wife grew up on a farm and we have a small flock of 14 sheep and 30 laying hens, we are currently in Ma. I retired from the fire dept and have a modest pension from that and a small military pension. We plan on selling our 1.3 acres here and buy a small farm in kentucky with about 20 acres. We hope to have a few Dexters for our own meat and a larger sheep flock. Your video’s have been very informative and enjoyable to watch. We can’t get enough. Hey Pete! I came across your videos a couple of weeks ago and love them. I grew up in Lancaster County, though not on a farm. My step grandfather farmed near a little town called Lemasters in central PA.; a farm much like yours. When I was growing up farmers had either a Farmall or a John Deere-although my grandpa had a Massey Harris, which he loved. He actually passed away on it. What a way to go! Pete, you cannot imagine my surprise when I learned that you all are near Ithaca. Our daughter and son-in-law live in Ithaca. He went to IC, and they have recently discovered the Farmers' Market. I sent her your recent video describing it and your work there. I have so much respect for the work you and Hilary do and just wanted to thank you for it- and recall this bit of wisdom you've probably heard: "God gave us two ears and one mouth for a reason." God bless you guys-and the girls! (Wish we could send some of that rain out west!)

We bought a pasture raised turkey from the farmer we support for the first time last year and it was, hands down, the best Thanksgiving turkey we have ever had. We will never go back to the grocery store turkeys!
I'm 71 and grew up in the middle of the San Fernando Valley, CA. When I was young, it was 1 mile squares of corn fields and citrus orchards scattered here and there between the track housing. . However, I knew nothing about how the crops were worked. My only interaction was to take an ear of corn from the closest field and eat it raw with my neighborhood buddy. Sorry for the theft, but I never thought of it that way when I was 8 years old. Also, you couldn't venture far away from Victory Bulvd. on the North side or you could become totally lost. No sound of the cars and 6 ft tall corn stalks with 4.5 ft kids makes for a kid trap. Scarry. I can't really say why, but I am addicted to you two. I consider you two to be my friends. Great farm wisdom for life. Thanks for the soothing entertainment.
My grandma is 70 now and she has always helped out on the farm (she runs it because my grandpa deid of cancer before I was born and my family used to run around 200ac)
I enjoy all of your vidios, but really liked this one where you talk about the kids. I love the way you respect them and protect them. It is good to know they help you at this point but you respect the fact they may not carry on with the farm. You both are wonderful people and parents.

The farm dad bought in 1971 had been a dairy. Where the girls walked to the barn was very compacted. I plowed it up to plant corn in the pasture and it was like hitting the brakes when you hit the path.
In the 1960's I grew up on a diversified 960-acre farm. Making a living from a small sized farm takes a lot of skill and reliable economic partnership with a spouse. I think its good your children are not pushed into more intensive daily chore routines. They seem to enjoy working with their parents and ready to take on the world.

Ask Hillary if she would like you to put in a big door at the end of the winter chicken house so you can get a used small skid loader in the chicken house and clean it out in a matter of hours instead of days and reduce or alleviate the use of her using a scoop shovel.

Thanks for the comments about the kids. I used their help at my woodworking business sparingly. I took advantage of self employment to be part of their activities. My kids have succeeded nicely and maybe my wife and I just concentrated on values. Seems like that's what's happening at your place
Although I had to do many things on the farm that I didn't enjoy, when I was growing up, it certainly didn't deter me from enjoying farming later in life, and I still have to do things that I don't enjoy.
I love what you are all doing working and farming together.
I come from very very deep farming roots on both sides of my family. My mother's father's parents had a farm for a long time, she kept a huge kitchen garden after they retired off the farm up into her 90's. My Father's parents are in their 90's and still own the farm. She worked the egg production house, milked, well everything over the years. There is an old picture of her mother as a child and probably her mother and some of the other women in the family working out in the fields on threshing day.
Women have and can farm same as a man.
It's a team effort.
But also agree it cant be forced.
My father grew tired of the pressure and got out of the farm partnership when I was a kid.
I'd like to get into farming.
But my 6 yr old daughter has no interest in working on a farm right now. So I dont push it on her.

I grew up with a single mother (divorced at an early age) and the only way myself and my siblings could buy things for ourselves (watches etc) was work. This stood us in good stead later in life as too many people just don't know how to (work), so, the best thing you can do for your children is teach them that hard work gets you where you want to go in life. Parents that don't even get their kids to do chores and give them pocket money for nothing are sabotaging their later life. And "yes" I came from a farming background also.
