Happy I'm Not Doing That Anymore!

  • There are so many different jobs on a farm, and our morning commute is measured in steps not miles. When I see the cars go by our house, I'm so happy I'm not doing that anymore! Today is a collection of small jobs: doing the chores, cleaning out the pigs pens, moving the Dexter cattle to new pasture, and packing for farmers market. Among them, I give a detailed explanation of how we set up temporary fences for strip grazing the cattle and talk about the importance of leaving trampled grass in the pasture vs. methods such as "zero grazing." I also spend some time while packing for market telling the story of how I got my first job in architecture. And I'm happy I'm not doing that anymore too!
    Note:
-We do not offer farm tours
-We do not ship our farm's products
-We do not sell live animals

I've done some work with temp agencies, and do a bit of volunteering. After a long career, retired, and still relatively fit, I think the different temp jobs give me insight into things I didn't even know existed. Plus, being paid minimal wage and temporary work (one or 2 days a week, sometimes more, sometimes vacation), it makes each job fun, some more than others, but still, great experiences. Also, I've met good, non-professional people who are smarter than me and are making it, many doing very well. Some kids who don't know what to do, no clue as to even how to get a clue. I like to think I've helped a few of them, just telling them what I went through. You never know how you impact other people, hopefully in positive, encouraging ways. People did that for me, too.

I recall after graduating from GA Tech with a bachelors degree in physics I tried unsuccessfully to find employment in my field. I eventually took a job doing bindery work in a printing business. I learned this skill while working part time at my Dad's printing company. Eventually I made enough money to return to graduate school and complete my education in that field. I worked 34 years in the government as a research scientist until retiring to the mountains of Virginia. I too am happy that I'm not doing that anymore.

This is exactly what my wife and I tell the grandkids now, take any job you can get. Take care of this job to protect your resume. This job need not be your career. At the end of high school, seeing as we were barbers we encourage them to be a barber it need not be your career, but did you ever know an unemployed barber, two every day you will have cash in your pocket at the end of the day as well as the end of the week. Plus you can be flexable enough to make tome for other studies. The biggest benefit was you need not like the customer because you only saw them for twenty minutes and listening to the stories of the whole shop you will get the broadest education ever imagined, and in the right shop we had the most fun fun fun.

A farmer in Virginia? had a circus wagonwheeled type chicken coop, which he moved along with the cows progress through the pasture. The ciw pies attracted bugs, which the chickens consumes as a good protein source. So, as pasture height declined from cows, he moved cows and cart around. You know i believe at the beginning there was a chicken preening itself quickly, because of the camera? I certainly glad that you and the wife are educating us with necessary routine and principles like you taught us while you were in pasture. Ie. left behind grass for soil health, and natural instincts in cows ie. grazing. This is not only a field trip for me, but a educational class in ergonomics, and livestock farming, just as if i were attending a field course school. its great and thanks😁🖐

I work full time as an hvac technician and though I earn a great living and am able to support my family, i find most days my heart just isn’t in it as much as it used to be. Hi from Lithuania, watching and learning from your videos every day. Old, new, all of them :)
I'm 34 and turned my life upside down 2 times and now the third time - trying to start a cattle farm. If you do something it has to bring you joy, if its not fun anymore - dont do it. Ofcourse it is ups and downs, but in general it must bring joy to your life.
When you realise that you can do and learn to do what ever you want, then you experience freedom.
Have a nice day, looking forward to new videos :)

Well, I'm so glad I started watching your channel. I retired 6 years ago and am enjoying being retired. It gives me plenty of time to watch quality channels, like yours. Your gentle nature comes across with ease and non- judgmental. I love the little things you share about life and can relate to your walk. And to have your life partner walking along beside you as you work the animals and land is so precious. I'm glad you left your professional career and went back to the land. I feel you two were made for it. I see joy and encouragement coming from your smile and your eyes. And I actually believe you mean what you say at the end of each video, Oh, and I have started to watch all the commercials all the way through because every little bit helps.

It makes me happy that you were able to succeed as an architect, it is not the norm. I went to college to become an architect in the early 80's. Towards the end of my second year my professor came in with a copy of the Wall Street Journal and read to us an article that showed architects at the time had about a 70% unemployment rate. My Dad worked two jobs to help me with tuition so it was a hard pill to swallow that I would spend all of this money to probably become unemployed. My Dad was very disappointed that I dropped out of college and went to work. I did work, I worked my way all the way up to middle management in a Fortune 250 before I stepped back to smaller companies where I had more, and at times, complete control. Not bad for a kid with a high school degree. I am almost certain I would have been a miserable architect, the thrill of managing a business was more than I could have imagined.

That was such a nice video. Good for the soul. Thanks for sharing some of your personal story. My wife has just promoted me to executive Vice President in charge of horse poop spreading. Love my little ground driven spreader.

I could watch one of your videos just of the cattle eating grass, very relaxing.

I remember my grandpa had a old garden rake that he would scratch his sows backs with just about every morning! They would scream until he scratched them 🤣 Good video Pete

Stumbled on to your videos and realized we are leading parallel lives with the notable exception of me making the jump to farm life. :) I am an architect, graduated college in 92, have done many different jobs, have renovated a late 19th century home, etc. :)

One great thing about your videos is that it shows a life style that is not focused on efficiency. Thank you. Also terrific done shots.

Boy that drone shot really makes it clear what you're doing and the difference in the grass is striking.

I'd like to read your version of Marcus Aurelius' "Meditations". Whether it would touch on philosophy, politics, mathematics, farm life, religion, mechanics, psychology, or whatever else (dad jokes, et cetera), I bet it would be interesting.
    Peace.
