      I use eBay for my eggs I usually get 72 eggs a time and get around 65-70% hatch rate 2 weeks after my first batch had matured I took 15 eggs in to the incubator and got 12 out so males are doing a good job this early out of those 12 had 10 females 😄

    • @davidisaac4636
      @davidisaac4636 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      And I have 20 females to 3 males and my hatch rate is pretty good I did try a fourth but the current 3 males refused to leave him alone once he tried to mount the females so didn’t go well and all my males did was bully him and no doing they’re jobs fertilising so seems I can’t add more males 😅

    Great video Terry ! I just had a hatch of coturnix chicks 4 days ago, hatched 24 out of 42 set. That's a 57% hatch rate on shipped eggs, I was pleased. I followed the exact procedures you described in this video and things went well. My only issue was that there was temperature fluctuation in my incubator, Genesis Hovabator 1588. It's 15 years old so I may buy or build a new one. I used 4 thermometers, 1 calibrated analog and 3 digital to monitor temps. Looking forward to setting eggs from my own quail once they're old enough. What kind of hatch rate is reasonable to expect with eggs from my own quail in a breeding group of 1 roo to 4 hens? Thanks for another helpful video, keep 'em coming my friend.

    • @CoturnixCorner
      @CoturnixCorner  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Congrats on the new hatch! As long as the temperatures don't fluctuate too much you should be fine, coturnix eggs are pretty forgiving and can handle minor temperature changes as long as they don't get too cold or too hot. I keep a 1 to 4 ratio and regularly get 80 - 90 percent hatch rates out of my established birds. Young birds and first timers usually have lower hatch rates, but give them some time and they will eventually get it right. Good luck on your upcoming breeding group! Thanks for being part of the channel.

    I am a small quail keeper. mostly for my own use. have successfully hatched and raised quail before. Right now I have 13 quail (3/10 ratio) Something I have always done, but don't know if it's needed is when storing the eggs for incubation, I have always put them in the egg turner with the cover off and turner on. Then, when I am ready to start, I just put the cover on and turn on the incubator. I have a Farm Innovations incubator. Styrofoam, from Tractor Supply. I also just use the chicken rails that came with it. I'm not going to bother getting the quail rails until I can justify a 120 bird hatch. What are your thoughts about the way I store hatching eggs?

    Can you have to high humidity? I always keep my humidity at 65 to 70 percent the whole process.

    • @CoturnixCorner
      @CoturnixCorner  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yes you can have the humidity too high. During incubation you want the humidity between 35 - 50%. And then bump it up to 65 - 70% during lockdown. If the humidity is too high while incubating the egg will absorb too much moisture causing a reduced air cell size, and when the chick pips the inner membrane there isn't enough air and they suffocate.

  • @yvettedraper-jt9qj
    @yvettedraper-jt9qj ปีที่แล้ว

    Is it a problem for the chicks still in the egg when hatched chicks are fumbling around jostling those guys?
    If I opened up the unhatched eggs and many of them had zero development does that mean unfertilized? The folks who got eggs from those hens before us had 100% hatch rate. Ours was miserable. 😕Two had developed quite a bit. One almost all the way and should have hatched. Didn't even pip.

    • @CoturnixCorner
      @CoturnixCorner  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Hbug13, no it's not a problem, it happens, and I have never seen any problems with chicks hatching because of this. If you are concerned, you can put drawer liner material in hatching tray to kind of dampen rolling effect, this will also help prevent splay leg.
      Yes, if there was absolutely no development of the egg, then most likely it was infertile. Were they fresh eggs?
      And it does happen that a chick will fully develop and fail to hatch. Sometimes the chick uses up all the air from the air cell and is too weak to pip the shell and they end up suffocating inside the egg. Good luck with your next hatch and thanks for commenting!

    I have 10 hens and 1 rooster currently in my 6x3 cage. Im concerned about the roosters fighting if I add another. Do you think thats enough room to safely add another rooster? Only 3 eggs out of 14 were fertile but I don't want them fighting and ending up hurting each other, or worse 😳

      Plenty of room to add another roo, put him in at night so you reduce the chance of aggression.

      Time for the eggs to quit being turned and humidity goes up to help them hatch

    I find it very strange that quails have to be hatched in an incubator. I mean how did they procreate in the wild? We had quails when our boys were little and they always sat on their eggs, hatched them and cared for their chicks. Why can't they do it now?

    I thought a quail is a quail. Didn’t know there are different ones. What are the best quails for quality of meat and producing eggs? 👍👍👍👍

    I raise and sell coturnix quail eggs.I is not a get rich quick deal.Lot of work and expense.In Michigan the NPIP certification cost is 300 bucks ,Then you have to pay the blood testers.The foam packaging material is great but not cheap. The feed is not cheap..If the sales are sporadic then you end up eating a lot of eggs yourself so that you can keep the eggs you sell for hatching fresh.If you sell small orders then there is a good chance that they have one of those toy type incubators they got for Christmas. Hatch rates can be really iffy.And then they blame you ,at least some people will.I started out with eggs from Myshire,,100 eggs.I hatched out 37.and then 2 of those died a couple days later.I did not blame Zach at Myshire.I raised those bird and then raised more off of those.Did a lot of tweaking and finally I was getting my hatch rate around 90%. I have 2 incubators and one always does better than the other one.Go figure! I moved 200 birds into my basement for winter.Not for the birds but for me..I have to feed and clean twice a day then carry all the poop outside to a dump pile near my garden.Lights are not the same as good old sunlight is and the timing of the lights affect egg size and quantity ..You can't hatch double yolkers.My sales are starting to pick up and boy am I grateful for that. It really helps with my feed bill. If I had it to do over again I think I will just close up shop around Nov or Dec. Then I would buy a couple hundred eggs from Myshire Farms the next February and start new hatch ,be back in business again by late march,Since most all of my pens are movable I will be way ahead of the game. Oh I forgot ,That stuff about humidity is way more important than you think so you better monitor it and raise it to like 70 or above around day 14 or you will have some problems because of it. Hope this helps somebody. Bob from bobsquailhouse gmail

    you mean hotter less water on the fifteen or more water more humidity meaning less water?. More humdity an more water more humidity less water. Setting key should be changed? To higher humidity keeping watering to daily top-up 10ml to 7ml?
