  • #darbarfestival | Young singer Pelva Naik trained under the dagarvani dhrupad dynasty, first with Zia Fariduddin Dagar and then his son Bahauddin. Here she explains the tanpura.

    Learn more about the music:
Pelva Naik is one of India’s few female dhrupad singers, but believes that “gender dissolves once the tanpura starts”. Born into a Mumbai family of dancers, writers, and filmmakers, she studied a wide variety of creative forms as a child, including kathak, khayal, miniature painting, and literature in Hindi, Gujarati, and English. At age 17 she found an instant bond with dhrupad when Zia Fariduddin Dagar gave a workshop at her school (“it matched my element…like a rediscovery”).
She soon became his disciple, as well as receiving instruction from veena maestro Bahauddin Dagar, and after school went to study full-time at the Panvel Dhrupad Gurukul. Today she continues to build a highly impressive performance resume as well as nurturing a passion for teaching. She is keen to remind listeners that gender has always been more of a barrier to worldly success than to mastery of the music itself: “I still haven’t figured out [why] people say that dhrupad is a masculine art form, or where that idea comes from...It’s just that on the public platform, men had more exposure...Ustad’s grandmother was a veena player. She used to practice veena at home, and teach the children.”
    -Jog | • Video
    -Maru | • Video
“I think it is the matter of least concern as to which gender pursues dhrupad more and which less. The concern is how true the individual singer/musician is towards the art form.” (Pelva Naik)
Recorded by Darbar in 2015, on location in Mulshi, India:

We'd like to upload everything for free - but filming, editing, and hosting cost money, and we’re a small not-for-profit organisation. Signing up to the Darbar Player costs about the same as a couple of coffees a month ($5), which we hope is an excellent price for such a wealth of unique music.

Pandit Mallikaarjun Mansur: "Without sitting under the Bodhi tree of the Tanpura, a singer cannot achieve sound enlightenment (naad nirvaana)."
Pandit Kumar Gandharva: "I am not singing my own music. I am just listening to the Tanpura and singing whatever it asks me to sing."
(I am not quoting their exact words, I am just paraphrasing from memory.)

its the way the bridge is shaped bc it rolls off on a rounded edge, and bc of the threads that are put between the string and bridge that create a small gap that amplifies the entire string and vibrates that small section of string underneath the strings which creates the twangy sound

well i'm no ma'am, but i asume that it does not only serve as accompaniment, but also as the whole base of the songs with its resonance. It's always repeating too, which gives it a meditating quality, an inevitability and trascendence that i've not seen in many instruments.

Mainak Bhattacharyya this instrument is a drone instrument, meaning that it makes sure that you don’t get off scale. Since it is tuned to Sa.
