    I have this tent, a 2019 model made in China. It is very well made, a bit better than the original US made model.
    1.) I dyed my internal tent with green RIT DyeMore, specifically for synthetic fabrics. I tied it off just at the floor to keep the DCF floor away from the hot dye water. Result? Wellll...I got a green/white "tie-died" look a foot above the floor all the way around but the rest of the inner tent was solid green. This gives me more shade and a bit more privacy - plus a damn unique look!
    2.) Next I added 4 stake loops of light nylon webbing, two on each side, for windy weather here in the mountain west of the US. I reinforced the fly with adhesive backed DCF circles (wrapped around the edge of the fly) that Henry Shires generously supplied to me on my request. (Henry knows I always modify his tents to suit my needs.) Further I reinforced those circles with larger Tenacious Tape circles for good measure.
    This is my 5th Tarptent so, yes, I'm a Tarptent fanboy. I still have my TT Moment DW and TT SCARP 2, both modified, natch.

    Hey RS a great video here. Yesterday I posted the comment about my inability to decide if the Aeon Li or Notch Li was the best tent. Today I want to update this and I like to use your TH-cam video for my sharing because I don't have forum memberships and because this tent debate has not yet been covered enough on the internet to give people enough relevant information to decide for themselves. And I think people conducting a determined web search will have to find your video and probably this comment. So here are my thoughts on this debate. The Notch Li is the more comfortable tent but the Aeon Li is lighter. And the details of this are as follows: The Notch has double doors and this is amazing. It allows for loads more ventilation which means less condensation, more cooling winds, and panoramic views. So the double doors are the primary reason and very good reason for buying the Notch instead of the Aeon. The Notch also has double walls which means less condensation. The Notch also has double vestibules for more outer storage space. Also the Notch can be bought with the inner that has mesh on top and closed on bottom to make the tent warmer when sleeping in cold winds unlike the Aeon which has an inner that is all mesh. Also Ryan Jordan from the American website backpacking light has said and shown in videos both tents' abilities to be used in winter, and other youtubers have shown the Notch works for winter, but my sense from Ryan was that he thought the Notch should be much better for winter. And the Notch can go flyless or even just pulling both vestibules open reveals the sky and landscape far better than the Aeon. So I think these are the most relevant points for the Notch over the Aeon. For the Aeon now - it is just lighter and packs smalleri. It is listed now at 17.4oz compared to the Notch's 19.7oz (if buying the "solid inner" which is the half solid/half mesh). And the Notch has a 0.05oz heavier stuff sack. So the Notch would only be 2.45 ounces heavier than the Aeon and for most people this weight savings is not worth it when buying a Notch means getting a quite superior tent over the Aeon. However the relevant details and considerations continue because the Aeon's weight difference becomes more noticeable depending on whether the hiker is bringing trekking poles. And that 2.45oz difference only applies if the hiker is bringing trekking poles. Because if they are not bringing trekking poles they would have to add tent poles to their pack. And with the Aeon they would only have to add one pole but with the Notch they would need two poles. And the lightest pole I know of that would work is the SMD 45" three section pole which is 1.7oz. So if the hiker isn't a trekking pole user they have to buy two of these for the Notch instead of just one of them for the Aeon - that means the Notch requires 1.7oz more tent pole weight than the Aeon. So now the weight difference between the tents is 2.45oz + 1.7oz = 4.15 oz. So this is the precise information I think people need and from here they can better decide. Additionally for the Aeon, some other plus points are that it actually has a 20% larger inside bathtub floor than the Notch. The Notch is 15 something square feet and the Aeon is 18 something. Also while the Notch does have two vestibules, the Aeon's vestibule is larger than one Notch vestibule. Also the Aeon has a smaller footprint than the Notch making it more versatile to pitch in more smaller places. Also, while the Notch is superior for winter and superior for ventilation the Aeon will still manage so it is not a matter of failure in these regards as much as a matter of inferiority to a better. And lastly of relevant comparison between these two tents is the Aeon, assuming one is not using trekking poles, is not only a determined 4.15oz lighter but it packs smaller: instead of packing two tent poles it only needs one and instead of being a 16" long package inside the backpack it is only a 14" package. So this Aeon Li vs Notch Li debate will always be a difficult one for people to decide I think but I hope these details have helped. For myself, I don't use trekking poles so I have decided the Aeon is better for me to save the four ounces, to save the bit of extra packspace and because I like its more versatility with being pitched in more confined spaces. One detail I left out to consider is that while both tents are good for stormy winds I believe the Notch will also be superior over the Aeon here because of the double tent poles, but again the Aeon will not be a failure in this regard and only a lesser to a better.

      Thanks for your interesting and detailed reply. To be honest I do not rate the Notch after having used it for a while. It is ideal for a night or two away but for multi day trips it has flaws. First is the need for two trekking poles. Friend of mine had one of his walking poles brake on a long hike and luckily had a friends to borrow or he wouldn't have been able to setup the shelter. The J-Zip setup wastes access and space. If it had been a T-Zip on both sides you could open it up fully making access and setting up your mat and gear easier. If you are sitting in the tent you cant access the other vestibule as door is really at your feet. The zips are not long enough at the bathtub / bottom making the inner door difficult to tie back. The triangular pockets for storing something such as a phone are useless. Another is if you are 5' 10" or taller and on a mat which is 10cm thick you get draughts across your head and feet. You can notice this in cold windy weather as the mesh sections taper down into the corners either end. More than that but they are key ones.Atb

    Hi Ray, my Stratospore 1 in sil nylon arrived yesterday. I am 6ft and can feel a bit cramped sometimes on the width. So I went for this option, it is in sil nylon but one day I may upgrade. A bit sad, but I camped out in it last night I need to get use to the pitch. But up in a flash and plenty of space. So very pleased. I look forward to seeing a notch for real sometime. Enjoy your tent, I'm sure we will be seeing more if it very soon. AtB Grant.

      I have this tent and I added two very simple elastic guy loops at the bottom mid point of these panels. I think that's all you need because the panels (unlike say the lanshan) will not depress in wind to the point where they are touching you. The elastic ties on the inner seem a faff, so I added the standard plastic toggles found on most tents. I don't have zips on the fly however its never let in so far. All in all a great tent design

  • @danielhouston8725
    @danielhouston8725 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It's either this or the Aeon Li as far as my eye can see. I bought the Aeon Li after seeing the American backpackinglight video from Ryan Jordan about it. I just hopped onto the tarptent website and bought it and I felt 100% sure I was buying the best tent on earth for my needs. And thanks to your video I am now 50% sure. I have now poured over more videos and reviews and blogs and this Notch Li vs Aeon Li issue simply cannot be resolved. The Notch is almost three ounces heavier - but three ounces is right on the cusp of significance and insignificance with a very significant issue (weight). The Notch also has an actually smaller inside floor - exactly 20% smaller - again a negative that is difficult to attach strong significance to about another significant issue - space (and the Notch has two vestibule spaces though if even the Aeon Li's single vestibule is larger than one of the Notch's vestibules...). So for every tiny worm hole in the apple there is a fresher juicy spot on it as with the also juicy orange beside it which also has the odd tiny blemish but of a different tiny blemish than the apple. But the shiniest part of the Notch Li it has doors on both sides and it is a double wall tent which must mean less condensation than the Aeon Li - even if not a lot less. Then again the Aeon Li's shiniest spot may be its much smaller area making it easier to pitch in tighter spaces and again that insignificant but still significant three ounces of lighter weight - and I suppose more like 4.5 ounces lighter when one isn't using trekking poles and has to add a second 1.7oz pole for the Notch when the Aeon only needs one. So all in all if I decide to keep my Aeon Li instead of exchanging it for the Notch Li, this decision will be to avoid the hastle of it but also because for the life of me I cannot decide which of these tents is better.

      I had the same dilemma, but what finally swung it for me was the see through material. The Notch
      Li with a solid inner is less see through, plus I suspect it will stand up to more wind.

    I altered the guylines on the small A poles on my tarp tent moment DW with a long single guy line that puts more tension on each end of the tent, leaving just the short guy lines attached to the bottom of the A poles. Does mean carrying two extra tent pegs.
    Easy to change back if it doesn't work for you.
    I've given up on using tent door tie backs and now use a clothes peg.

    Hasn’t bothered me even on cliff top gales, but I can see the improvement and with a couple of yer big panel stick on anchor points. (I wouldn’t bother with the end ones mind as it’s pretty aerodynamic and sturdy in the wind from the ends).
    Jist another one. 😊. Ye need be careful cooking in the porch especially with meths as I have scarred the dyneema slightly. Didn’t realise the heat was getting to it. It’s still functions and is waterproof, just hoping it doesn’t degrade ower time.

    UPDATE: I shortened the nylon webbing at the floor-to-pole attachments. They were too long to permit the floor to be fully widened without setting the hiking poles at too much of an angle. I cut the webbing down to 3/4"" when doubled it back and hand stitched it nearest the floor leaving a small loop to insert a heavier elastic core for the pole end attachment.
    BTW, I purchased the optional hiking pole handle "pockets" that tie in the peaks and capture your hiking pole handles so they stay in place (and stay off the wet ground!)
    Also you will find, when comparing Tarptent DCF tents with most other DCF tents, that the design, sewing and reinforcements are at the top of their class. Henry shires lost many of his sewers to a warehouse company so had to send the DCF tents (only) to one of China 's very top tent fabricators and it shows in the great quality of his DCF tents.

Looks a nice shelter, I’ve seen one of there models in action on a thru hike and was amazed at the weight (or lack of), my silnylon tent all saggy in the morning and the Cuban fibre tent just as taught as when pitched. Like the idea of modding the side panels. Good luck with tent Ray, look forward to seeing your clips of CWT , 👍

    • @RS.Outdoors
      @RS.Outdoors  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do know walk with wallace used the Silnylon Notch for his CWT trek and got on well with it. However for me I found it too cramped and small for use on a long trek. My ideal option was my first walk on the CWT using the MLD Duomid as very strong in high wind. Initially fix with four pegs, put pole up and and you are out of the bad weather. Great space to get packed or unpacked. If you add an inner from 3F such as the one I got online then you doint suffer badly from single skin setup condensation either.

      @@RS.Outdoors Thanks Ray, thats really helpful. Im nervous about using my duplex on the CWT as it has no zip and im concerned about wind direction shifting after set up. Maybe the duomid (if available that is!) is the way forward then.

    Having used a silnylon Notch since 2016, the additional tie out on the bottom of the vestibule flaps would be the only thing I'd like to do. Prop a stick under each one for more room and ventilation. Even with the mesh interior, the tent is surprisingly good at not being drafty.

      It is an ok tent but has a few quirks. Due to the two trekking poles and DCF material the top is very tight and is silly loud in heavy rain because of it. Also the staggered J-Zip doors are a but of a pain to access gear depending on what end you are sitting and wish it was a t_Zip setup so you could open up the whole inner. Because of the small doors it can be a faff at times setting up your mat as your backside sticks out in the rain, lol. The inner door tie backs are not the best. Haven't had issues with getting wet and condensation not been an issue as yet. been fine in mild windy weather but nothing storm force yet. However still think a DCF pyramid style shelter is best setup I have owned to date. Atb

      It looks like it works ok with your wide pad? (I use a Thermarest uberlite 25" wide matt)

    You would think after a century of progression in tent design and manufacture, collectively they would have come up with a suitable
    tent that is not only lightweight and warm, but fully waterproof too. Seems a bit like cars, they all take you from A to B, but some do
    so in more lavish surroundings with better or lesser fuel economy, etc
    Tent companies should act on feedback and design for individual use whilst increasing the same design in size for two, three and
    upwards. Also if we were to see an end to tents selling at under £100 in UK we may just begin to see an end to tents being
    discarded at festivals or lochsides, for even dirty campers have a budget.
    Thanks for the review however, very useful and a lot of work to upload by the looks of things. Cheers 🙂
