@@tobyzilla It's not Microsoft though. Multiple Microsoft titles have received SDKs. DooM Eternal, Halo MCC, and Starfield have full blown mod tools and support. The latest DooM 1 and 2 ports features robust mod support. It's the higher ups at Mojang. Microsoft would greenlight official mod tools.
@@miberss that's questionable logic at best honestly because Mojang are definitely not opposed to modding minecraft, just look at the effort they have put in to their datapack tool. If i really had to guess its that the main team on bedrock doesn't want to maintain a modding API
@@miberss I think the reason Microsoft is scared of it is because Minecraft is a little bit TOO moddable, like to the point you can just rewrite the entire core gameplay and they think it'll just take away their customers to go and play those modded more fun and fresh versions of Minecraft. Which they're not entirely wrong but yk, that's what they get for not giving the community what they want. But all evidence points against that being the case like Minecraft Java Edition and Factorio where the sheer customizability of your game is one of the major selling points of the game, especially after you've completed it already.

Mods have been free on bedrock since it’s release, and will continue to be free. This only affects legacy server software. It’s a change that has people riled up for no reason.

Mojang wonders why Java players are horrified that they will be shut down in favor of bedrock. This is why. To a java player, the bedrock edition is a horror story. Massive bugs, missing features, mediocre mods that cost money, etc. It's like Minecraft if it was created today by a greedy corporation. No one wants this. Minecraft is one of the biggest games in history and will likely always make money. No need to make it pay to -win- have community content, and destroy the game.
Edit: I'm not saying the version will be shut down, just that the backlash is completely understandable. Microsoft should expect heavy backlash when they try to replace FREE community content with greedy microtransactions in one of the most played games ever.

fun fact; this result was actually due to the frogs' brains being removed before being boiled. They still jumped in sudden heat due to spinal chord responses, but not slow heat.

You realize this is almost completely wrong? PDB files were removed in favor of better server solutions such as the literal built in server side APIs into the game. There’s no reason to use PDB files when the scripting API exists on bedrock. It’s just legacy code that most software relied on, because they’re brainless.
As a Java player, I didn't expect to last this long. I expected Java to die off while Bedrock gets forced out of mods and pushed with microtransactions that just kill the game.

Love how people keep forgetting that the marketplace content is mostly made by the community. It's pretty much the only way people can make money in Minecraft without breaking rules. Like really, selling mods on Java is not allowed tho I do see people selling texture packs (kinda makes sense but I don't like it) and shaders

If you make a mod and only give it to people who pay for it, its okay, they agreed to pay for something you made and it doesnt stop them from playing the game if they dont buy it, minecraft straight up cannot stop people from selling mods or other stuff if they wanna. @@Yawne. the EULA literally forbids selling mods. Heck, Mojang literally forced people to either make their mods free or remove it altogether. A popular example is the Physics Mod

I warn you all. Mojang will try to make the Java Edition (the original and only Minecraft) look obsolete to force players into Bedrock , they will delay updates or not even release it, they will remove features, they will lie about it, they will ignore fans requests. A lot of big devs did the same thing with their games, they can't keep getting away with it

If they stop updating Java in any way, modders will easily mirror whatever update they add in bedrock.
Java modders are already able to add update features faster than Mojang.
Not to mention a huge chunk of players play in older versions because of the mods available to those versions (namely 1.12 or 1.16).
Pirating of Java edition is already pretty big, even if Mojang tries to shut it down, they *will* fail.
Mojang cannot kill Java edition. It's actually impossible.
They're not keeping Java around out of the goodness of their hearts. They're still supporting it because

I dont think java will be going anywhere anytime soon even if they stop java support. Modders are determined people, theres mods that add ALL the mobvote mobs, missing features, new features, and great mechanics among several dozen other things. They cant take java down easily

I find it very funny how they want people to play bedrock and for it to be the main version people play on, but at the same time do everything in their power to make it worse. I feel sorry for the people who don't have a PC and as such can only play bedrock, or the people who can't afford Java.

I got bedrock on my phone cuz I enjoy playing minecraft on mobile but jesus christ, back on my day we didnt even had pistons, ppl had to make mods to add stuff that was already in the game on pc and they took a good friking while to add them.
lets not even talk about how slow and painful the spawn rate on bedrock is, imagine building a whole farm block by block and finding out "oops, your version is so slow that farming exp takes 10x longer, stay mad :D "
As a Java modded player I feel sorry for those on Bedrock, mods is what made me keep playing after years and years, I hope they do something about it.

There really does need to be more shoutout for Vintage Story. It's basically modded Minecraft.
As a Bedrock player, I already hated bedrock, the only reason I still played it was because I don't have a PC.
Well, now we're seeing what would've happened if modding started today. Modern Mojang (probably Microsoft) would've nipped it in the bud and sold what was once free. The only reason they don't do this shit to Java edition is not just because it'd be pretty difficult, actually. Not only that but also because Java actually has a modding scene big enough to actually cause a problem if they started cracking down.
Microsoft can physically NEVER shut down modding on Java. The Java programming language can easily be reverse engineered. In fact, Mojang used to never provide pdb files for Java, yet mods were made anyways. If they removed them, modders would just have to go back to the old way of modding. Making mods would be harder but definitely not impossible.
also even with obfuscation, as long as its java based, it can and WILL be decompiled

The Java modding scene is so large that Java players don't need MS to continue developing MC Java, and MS knows this. If MS ever tried to kill Java, someone would immediately announce a Minecraft Java Edition Parity Mod where whatever updates MS develops for Bedrock are immediately mirrored in a mod for Java. Cracks for Java will be posted everywhere, third party skin and authentication servers will rise up overnight, and one-click installers will take care of it all. MS won't kill Java because it knows that Java cannot be killed.
On what pdb files are:
Exe files are just machine code, binary data. Finding out what thing some part of the code is responsible for to modify it requires going through it by hand, and reading it instruction-by-instruction
PDB files put human-readable labels on different functions in the code, so you can immediately know where to look for, for example, the game generates the world so you could add your own biome by injecting your code
PDB files are more than just names, they're _instructions for decompilation._ Without it, a decompiler looks at the machine codes, goes "what the *_hmm_* is this", and does its best to convert it into... _assembly code._ The program needs a PDB to figure out "oh, these chunks of data should look like this C++ data structure, okay" and converts it to something that not only has human-readable _names,_ but human-followable _logic._ Java is different, because Java bytecode is _by its very nature_ decompileable into the exact functions and program flow of the source code. Sure, the names will be missing if the code was obfuscated, but Java modders have been solving _that_ "giant crossword puzzle" _since the Beta days._

@@WackoMcGoose Funny you say that, that puzzle is basically solved for Beta version. The 1.2_02b leak de-obfuscated nearly all the code used in Beta Minecraft and it's been like a renaissance for better (misspelt beta but leaving this in lul) Minecraft modders.
@@uponeric36 Yeah, back in the days of Minecraft Coder Pack, modders had to _manually guess_ at all the names. It's only in recent versions that there's been deobf mappings provided by Mojang Sweden... but if Mojang Redmond ever orders them to stop providing, Java modders will be like "Oh no! Anyway..." and go back to the old crossword-solving method (once you have the decompiled-but-obfuscated code which is trivial to do with basic Java dev tools, you just have to look for similar data structures between old and new versions to go "okay, this is probably named that" and figure it out from there, then once it's solved, provide "community deobf mappings" to modders and done).

Take for example Yarn, Yarn is an obfuscation mapping that can be used instead of the one provided by Mojang, and it is heavily used in the Fabric modding community
Since it wasn't explained in much detail, pdb files are the program database, files that debugger programs rely on them to let a developer well, debug the code, step through it line by line in a human readable language like C++, which is what bedrock is written in, without it, the modding community will not be able to see any of the program symbols, leaving the wholy obtuse machine code in its place meaning the binary would have to be reverse engineered for every single version of the game going forwards if anyone wants to make any mod, a nearly impossible task for a game as big and as frequently updated as minecraft, if modding is to remain a thing at all, it will likely only happen for major versions reversed by the community every few years.

Apperently native bedrock launcher doesn't even let you stay on an old version? So you would have to use external launchers, the creation and maintaining of which will also get harder because of this? Bedrock modding is so dead. I feel so bad.
As a bedrock main, it hurts, but I still prefer the very, very vanilla. No texturepacks, no mods, not even custom skins, nothing. Just raw experience.
People before sigscanning became a thing be like:
there is already a version switcher that only requires you to be enrolled in preview, then deinstall the game. after that you download versions and it automatically creates a profile for you. its called MCLauncher. unfortunately it is for PC only, but you can utilize a PC to change your Android version, but its so much of a hassle that you might as well use your PC and spend the however much minecraft costs on PC to save you the hours of constantly changing versions.

It's not really a mod, if only it were it would be great, but it's just an addon, (a pack that modifies existing things) and of course it has a lot of limitations and couldn't even be compared to Java modding, but with the pdb files you could more or less easily, modify the game code in various ways. @@Zencedyes they do, well, not by default but there is a setting that you can change called "only allow trusted skins" turning it off will allow customers skins to work perfectly fine
@@Zenced You can, but it's hidden in the settings > profile called "Allow only Trusted Skins". Turn it off and you can see custom skins of other players. Tho I don't like how it's enabled by default, making the majority of the bedrock players unaware of the fix.

What they’re ignoring is that not everyone has the chance to get a computer that can run Minecraft Java. bedrock offers a way for kids who’s families don’t have as much money to still play the block game. And the fact that they’re restricting this on the VERY app that was meant to be a cheap and easy substitution, and making it so the only way you can modify your game is through paying, is just sickening.
on top of that, if you are in the ecosystem of mobile or playstation, it doesnt make sense to by a pc and jump ship to microsoft store and buy the game again

Paying doesn’t give you mods. It gives you addons and texture packs. Regular users can make addons and texture packs, and you can download them externally for free into your client. There is no modding present anywhere on bedrock
If Microsoft tuches java even a bit I'm pretty sure the community will get together and make a brand new minecraft

@@RaelExplodesno no minecraft clones already exist. Microsoft doesnt own a block game genre. The community could VERY easily recreate it since minecraft uses mostly real world animals and objects. Very few would actuallly need to be ommited like creepers , endermen and minecraft exclusive entities. Zombies , villagers , skeletons etc would be fair game.

I defended 1.19.0, 1.20, and the slow update rates. But this, cannot be defended. It’s up there with chat reporting with the underhanded way it was snuck in and the almost certain top down decision it likely is.
It's seeping into Java edition, too. Any version after 1.20 has *forced* telemetry on, so Minecraft is phoning home whenever you load or unload a world, telling Microsoft:
- User ID (Xbox live ID)
- Client ID
- Minecraft Session ID (what even is it?)
- Game Version
- Operating System
- Platform (32 or 64 bit)
- Is your client modded?
- The launcher name
- UTC timestamp (exact time, to the second)
- If you're opted in to extra telemetry
- World Session ID (what???)
- Is the server you connected to modded?
- Type of server you're connected to
- Game mode (why????)
- Realms Map Content
Don't believe me? Open any modern version of Minecraft, go to Options > Telemetry Data Collection.

oh thank god its not just me. the only time ive ever played bedrock was for the 15th anniversary so i could get the cape, and the viewbobbing was making me sick to my stomach. ive had zero issues using viewbobbing in the 13+ years i've played java edition, theres just something so off about bedrock's

The real reason I switched from Bedrock to Java and almost never go back wasn’t because of stuff like parity or whatever. Rather just because of the freedom of it. I’m free to customize my skin, mod my game for infinite replayability, create my own modpacks, and play different versions of the game. Meanwhile whenever I decide to poke Bedrock with a 39 1/2 foot pole to play with my friends on Realms, I’m reminded of why I switched. The marketplace with usually half baked attempts at mods, the skin customization with its marketplace items being mostly stolen, censorship of stuff on a Realm with my friends or when playing by myself, janky gameplay, horrible menus, overall stale feeling worlds, the fact that Java is just a few clicks away is constantly dangling over me. I seriously feel bad about all the disasters Bedrock players have to put up with. I really wish Java could just happen on consoles and they could experience it just like us.
The censorship itself is enough for me to prefer java. If I'm on a private realm with friends, all of us are adults, I think we should be able to say the word "shit" in chat. In one world I built a greenhouse and was labeling the plants, but it kept censoring the herbs. I'm guessing because oh no, weed (how scary). Nobody's on minecraft calling weed "oregano." So I tried to use scientific names instead, but apparently "basilicum" is too vulgar -- ironically "vulgare" was too vulgar too. Ridiculous.
Microsoft had two versions of Minecraft to turn into the de facto, cross platform version of the game.
The original PC game which is well-made, already has an active community, and wouldn't be too hard to convert to another programming language if necessary and release it for other platforms given the size and budget of microsoft.

The parity on those versions of Minecraft was excellent minus the restrictions imposed (non infinite worlds, mob cap, etc) but those were just due to the limited hardware of older consoles compared to PCs at the time.

There's certaintly bad companies out there. And don't forget that a lot of names actually belong to other, big companies. For example, Microsoft bought Blizzard, which means that it also got activision and eveything else, however, they keep their names. If they release a game you'll see the name "Blizzard" or "Blizzard Activision" and not "Microsoft". This is relevant because it may appear that a lot of game companies are bad, but they're just poorly managed by worse companies.

Microsoft stands above those two by far. Nintendo and Sony suck ass as companies. They are extremely anti-competitive and anti-consumer. Microsoft's biggest issue is that they are a western company with many shareholders, and have to appease them, but other than that they provide a lot of freedoms for consumers and despite monopolistic tendencies you'd expect of a large company, are more than willing to work with third parties.
What you have to understand is not that Microsoft bad Sony good, or Microsoft good Sony bad, but that _all_ of them suck. They're all bad. Microsoft is the shiniest turd.

This is part of the identity of Vintage Story too. It's modding is much easier and the devs actually acknowledge it as a part of the game's community.
I literally only bought Minecraft when it was on sale and I haven't played Vanilla yet, only modded. There were a lot of things that I thought were modded but turns out that it wasn't. For example, amethyst, caves going lower than 0 (I knew they got a big update but I still thought they were gonna keep above 0), ruined portals! I really thought ruined portals and similar structures were modded like from quark or something, turns out, it was a way to guide new players through the story.

The latest DooM 1 and 2 ports features robust mod support. It's the higher ups at Mojang. Microsoft would greenlight official mod tools.

It's genuinely impossible to remove mods from Java. I remember when there were no modding tools or launchers, we literally just put .jar files in the .bin folder to run mods. Worst case scenario, we'll all return to ~~monke~~ installing mods for Java in a slightly more complicated way.
@@MimungTatzelwurm There are ways to compile Java Ahead of Time entirely into Native executables by virtue of Graal, which would turn the Java version into an unmoddable pile of machine instructions, just like Bedrock is currently. The only thing that makes Minecraft easy to decompile currently is that they compile Java to run on top of the HotSpot virtual machine. If they swapped to making Minecraft a native executable instead of a Java jar, modding for Java would die pretty much immediately. We can only hope Mojang does not switch to Graal one of these days

I don't think it's a coincidence that they destroy free modding not too long after adding purchaseable "mods" to the marketplace, then take over half the money of every "mod" purchased for themselves. I was in the midst of creating the funnest realm known to man, with a 1:1 replica of the whole world which looked absolutely beautiful. I renovated it, added houses, added new animals added a mod with factions who had weapons and vehicles. you would play as a country and essentially conquer the whole world as you saw fit. the combat was so fun, it took weeks to fully capture a region with your own army and strategy, it was balanced. It was awesome. But It’s all for nothing now because the mods don’t work on it anymore. I am absolutely pissed. It took me literally a year to make and I still wasn’t fully done, now there is no point in continuing to work on it

This mojangs fault really not microsofts. Sure microsoft wanted the chat report system but mojang was the one who made it like this trash. But any other ingame changes that was made was mojangs not microsofts. Microsoft only cares about the marketing and the cash. They let mojang do their own work. If anything mojang here to blame. They dont listen to the community. The only times they listen when their own reputation is on the line

What makes a developer good isn't the quality of what they make, but rather how they interact with their communities. Good developers listen to their communities and make changes and updates using feedback. Bad developers ignore their communities and do what they want. Awful developers pretend like they listen to the community, taking in feedback, and do nothing with it, instead doing what they want.
Activision and all of it's related developers are bad developers. They do want with the game, but they never bother asking for feedback. They don't manipulate people into thinking they care about them, they outright show they don't. Old Mojang, back when things like hunger were added, were good developers. They listened to their community and actually acted on the feedback, adding stuff like redstone, cake, and a bunch of other stuff.
I haven't seen Mojang actually listen to feedback for quite a while. We see them fixing issues that everyone complains about, but that stuff is obvious and they don't need feedback to see those issues. What I have seen is people suggesting really good features and begging to keep things that are already in the game, like fireflies, copper lamp single ticks, and now those PDB files, only for them to get stripped away. There's also those chat filters and being able to report people, which are stupid af and people want rid of, as well as the mob vote, which has a good chance at being entirely rigged. All of these decisions go completely against what the community wants, despite Mojang asking for feedback or saying that they listen to us. They're try to manipulate us into thinking that they care about what we want, but they don't, they do what they want and try to trick us into thinking we have a say in it. They are awful developers, both in what they do, and what they don't. And they're going to keep being awful for the rest of the game's life. But jokes on them, because what they're doing will kill the game faster. You can't have a game without a community, and pushing people away from your game is the best way to do this. It'll take a while, years probably, but it'll last way less than if they actually paid attention to their community.
They're puppets in the hands of Microsoft. Remember, "good soldier follows orders".
I honestly dislike the use of "developers don't listen", it really puts a false narrative. It's the higher ups, the project managers that control how things go. I think people should really look into the Corridor Crew video "I Prove Hollywood Effects Aren't BAD, They're RUSHED". I think it's closer to reality of what is happening in most cases. Of course there are games where the developers are the ones in control and actually don't listen but here it's a corporation. The developers are probably told not to respond to anything and do as it's said in the office. (all speculation)

@Durzik I do, yeah, but it was really pathetic. The reporting system is bad, but at least mods can fix it, and Mojang seems to have improved it, at least to some degree.
An actual movement like maybe #SaveJava would be great, but I honestly have my doubts that a community like Minecraft's both for its size and immaturity would be able to hold together proper protest. The larger a community is the harder it would be to change its public image.
Also the thing with #SaveTF2/#FixTF2 is that the community is much tighter than Minecraft's. It was also much easier for outsiders to understand, and it was much easier to take seriously. Also Minecraft's community is very divided by a lot of things like language barriers and region. Whereas this isn't really an issue in TF2 as it mostly centers in English speaking countries.
Yeah overall I'm pretty pessimistic that the Minecraft community of 12 year olds and man children could really get off their asses enough to be taken seriously.

Addons can be created for free and imported into the game for free though. You can just choose not to buy them from the market place and even make them yourself
Wow. They really just ruined every map made by bedrock players. All of the modded maps that I have spent months on are completely unplayable. I feel absolutely awful for any Bedrock map creator that has spent long amounts of time on their modded maps, only for them to now be ruined. Nice Job Mojang.

Funny thing actually. They timmed a massive restructure of the codebase with the PDB getting removed meaning vewry little can be transfered from old PDBs now. (You can still move a lot. Tho for example the Level class has had over half its members removed)
As someone involved in the bedrock third-party server community for a while, this does not really kill third party servers but it will make certain things a lot more difficult than it should be. Luckily we also still have people from partnered companies helping us out.
At least we have still have another way to do this, plus add ons.
The main reason why minecraft is still played is cause modding and plugins.

bedrock doesn't have a feature like that, you need to download in order to switch versions.
Its actions like these that are going to lead to the eventual death of minecraft. Mods are most of the community, and if they remove mods in other versions, then there really won't be a community left. A game without a community is fated to die in obscurity, no matter the popularity it once had.
As a bedrock player, I already expected it to happen and I hated bedrock since the day I died from fall damage without falling a couple years ago.

I started transitioning my servers away from modded servers when I first heard about them getting rid of the PDB. Luckily, that gave me time to transition everything to scripting and running the exe in a node.js container. No, it's not even close to being as good, but here we are.
While most people would say "Lol, just play Java. It's way superior", I think those people don't know that half of Minecraft's playerbase nowadays are on Bedrock solely because they either preferably play it on their smartphones or couldn't afford a PC at all, let alone a good one. Because of Bedrock's portability and crossplay feature, it became a huge hit in every gaming market (mobile, console, etc.) To see this happening to Bedrock players is quite unfortunate, Java fans don't know how impactful Bedrock is to the Minecraft community
Yup, the java elitists dont realize that a computer good enough to run java comfortably costs about the same as a new xbox, ps, or phone. If someones allready in the PS or xbox ecosystem its not financially smart to jump ship over a single game.

As much as I don't like what Microsoft/Mojang has been doing to Bedrock Edition over the years, absolutely! Its impact cannot be ignored. There are very good reasons why Bedrock Edition is still wildly successful, especially in terms of accessibility. On another note, I will add this, there is a pretty interesting way to play Java on a mobile device if you are in a situation without a computer and you REALLY didn't want to play the Pocket Edition / Bedrock Edition. It's called PojavLauncher. I've tried it out before, it works pretty well on my Google Pixel 6a!
