Lots of these are used as unmarked cop cars in Japan. When one of these pulls up on me I feel the same tinge of fear as I would if it were a Crown Victoria in the USA. (Crown...Crown Victoria...hmmm...)
Patrick Gillespie that feature has been around since the 90's. I wonder why it never took off here in the States on average cars. Probably too expensive.
The chevy SS never work in the US because it was never advertised, so nobody knew it existed. Cletus Mcfarland was thinking of importing one he saw while in Australia, having no clue there were already some sold in America.
I'm just going to copy/paste a comment I posted on the RCR subreddit: They weren't marketed very well, if at all. As a result not very many Americans even know what the G8 or SS even is. This combined with the SS's dull styling causes it to be commonly mistaken for just another fwd commuter car. Not only that but there was the price, over here the Chevy SS has a starting price of $46,625, while the Dodge Charger R/T with the 370-HP 5.7L V8 starts at only $32,495. There is also the Charger ScatPack with the 485-HP (70 more than the SS) 6.4L V8 at $39,995. Even a Chrysler 300c with all the options is still cheaper than the SS by about $1,000. On top of both of those factors many Americans, other than the Charger fans, who want something with a ton of power generally don't want a sedan. They are more likely to pick up a Chevy Camaro, Dodge Challenger, Ford Mustang, or even a Corvette. TLDR: The SS is marketed poorly, has boring styling, and is much more expensive compared to the competition. And as a result, doesn't sell very well in the States.
@@daniellord08 In Australia you can buy a Basic ss in cloth trim , if it sold it usa it would have started at $32000usd , In Australia Mustang and Camaro are top spec models only . Why it looks like we pay a lot but we also have 20% -50% tax on cars above $60000aud
I remember my father, a cop in Jamaica, using Toyota Crowns in the fleet. Eh, it was a big Toyota, as the fleet had been switched to all Japanese from Australian in a cost saving moving move (cheaper to buy and more reliable), so in my mind a Crown is the equivalent of a Crown Vic with a Cressida, if 80's Cressidas were all leather or Vinyl. By the way, as a command Sergeant, his personal vehicle was a Land Cruiser, better to hold a shotgun and light submachine gun while being able to shrug off bullet holes better than a Crown.
More reliable? They assemble cars well in Australia, until recently, Toyotas as well. Aussie cars usuallt reliable. Industry closed now due to cheaper offshire

The Crown is actually not very common in NZ, because they're not that common in Japan to begin with (unless you talk about those ex-taxis which no one wants to import). I’ve got a 2006 Toyota Crown Athlete myself. It’s the previous generation in this video. The 3.5L V6 does produce 315HP. My 0-100 is 5.4s. This is one of the fastest cars you can buy for the displacement it has; naturally aspirated whilst being full-sized luxury sedan. It’s the Lexus LS (with a GS350 engine)made for the Japanese taste.

Soviet Labrador it's Imported into New Zealand like this Crown. Although worth pointing out that the Century exists outside of Japan but mostly owned by the families who operate the toyota dealerships. There's a LHD version owned by a rich family who sells Toyota's and Lexus in Bahrain.
I only got to visit New Zealand for a couple days on my way to and from Antarctica, but it's one of my favorite places in the world and I can't wait to go back some day.
Kind of reminds me of the first gen Lexus GS300 (absolutely loved that car! Even with the mini disc player, I'm actually impressed with the stereo system on this car. On the 2011 Camry, the closest thing you've got is an LCD-dot matrix type message reading "Welcome to Camry" across the display. And that's just the LE version. My 2002 was even more basic before I replaced it with an aftermarket Kenwood, but at least it was AM/FM/CD/Cassette.
Seeing the Toyoto Crown name on a car like this is weird. Where I'm from, the Toyota Crown is used as Taxi. Not the athlete version, the Comfort v2.0 , kinda makes sense, the self-closing doors, the driver doesn't need to get out of the car, everything just sorts itself out automatically and he can move onto the next job once the passenger gets out. When you really think about it the Crown is an aspirational vehicle for the man who wants nothing more than to be the ultimate provider. The soft close doors. Not for himself. The comfort. Not for himself. The "performance" , the stealth fun he has after work at the nearby canyon before he comes home to a bunch of noisy kids. Stealth allowable fun and responsibilities bundled in one.
the Crown was sold in my country until the late 90's. It was sold along with the Cressida and the Corona (later renamed Avensis). The cool thing about the older Crown is the 1JZ engine. Lovely engine. It was even better in the Cressida, since it was smaller.
So this is pretty much the JDM version of a Lexus IS 350? The 2GR made good power for its time in my opinion. Always love seeing Toyota Reviews on this channel! Thanks.
I mean... It's not exactly a JDM It's also available in China and Hong Kong market But I guess you can call it. It's the Asian version of Lexus GS Ah also, Mark-X is also available over here in Hong Kong What is funny is that we even use the crown for Taxi (Crown Comfort)here. Yet people are still calling those JDM. Lots of "JDM" actually imported by an official dealer in Hong Kong. You can check the R32 GTR commercial in Hong Kong if you don't trust me. *For cheaper importing fees, lots of Japanese imports of the USA are actually from the UK or Hong Kong, the more you know.
Random knowledge I learned today from an Australian friend. The 180 and 200 series Crown had matching Citizen watches available, that functioned as a SMART KEY. You could unlock, lock, and start the vehicle with the watch. I love Japan.
Toyota Crown is the BMW 5 series of japan. FINALLY THERE IS A AMERICAN REVIEW OF THIS CAR. Americans have been ignore this car long enough If Toyota sold this car in the US... NOTHING HONDA NISSAN SUBARU make would be even close to this. This shows that Toyota America and Toyota Japan/over seas are two different brands. This is one of those cars I want to own.. they actually race and drift these in japan. I feel like you could have gave this car a better review then just charking it up to being a middle ground car which it's not. This is a performance sedan and a Luxury car this is what Toyota America is missing.
Toyota4Life Lmao hunny bunches of oats Coming from the guy that has your name you really can't say such things It's truly a travesty I'll find a channel one day!
There's like one guy that drifts Crowns at the highest levels and I've never seen one on a race track for anything besides a drift event. The Athlete isn't a serious performance car. You can't even get it with anything but a slushbox. It's about as much of a performance car as the Pontiac Bonneville GXP. I love em but you're way off base.
@LEGIT.PLAYZZ Anything without a Lexus badge looks better than anything with a Lexus badge. If not better, than at least ugly enough to trigger a reaction other than neutrality. [lowblow]Like the Scion xB[/lowestofblows]
As a canadian child in the 80's, my father had a '63 Crown. If my memory serves me right, it was just two chrome bumpers, two hard bench seats, a terrible broken plastic steering wheel, and a smell of overheating coolant. I miss that car. Also, no seat belts in that beast.
The reviews done by you guys are my favorite to watch because you say all the things that the voice in a average person ties to suppress and that is why this is the only review channel i watch with full intent to first learn and second have a good laugh
When I used to hang out on AustNet IRC 10 years ago, I was given a super early version of the game Automation. It only contained basic engine modification and a few features but I can confirm it's fantastic. Do support. Want to design an engine with all the fiddly bits? Piston stroke, bore size, cam profile, exhaust, etc, etc, etc? This is the game you want.
Good catch! I was going to mention that if I scrolled much further and didn't see it. I got my start in the world of car repair working on those two engine families.
When talking GM V6's it's also better to talk Lxx designation. It's because GM had totally different engines within a few years with the same displacement. Not to mention some changes over the years like ignition or injection really made them perform differently. And that Toyota engine is more comparable to the High Value series with direct injection and variable valves than the earlier 60° variants that only had port fuel injection. So it's more like the 250HP (LFR) than the 175HP (LA1). And neither of those are DOHC like the LQ1, which would confuse things even more. And then of course you had some of the same design flaws shared across different blocks. So both the 60° and 90° V6s had the bad LIM gaskets from the factory, which would further confuse things and get people mixed up with those. (Which in either case wasn't a really problem intrinsic to the engine, but a mistake using a part made of a composite not compatible with DexCool. Which in turn caused problems the engines gets blamed for having. The engines become stupid reliable once fixed with a metal gasket.) And I only know this because I have a car with an LA1. I can only imagine it makes things more fun for shop mechanics if make year and model aren't somehow mentioned.
You are the best car reviewer I have ever seen in my life! You really did defined the true spirit of the Crown. Thank you for explaining to the U.S. what Crown is! I own a 1990 Toyota Crown in U.S. best car ever!
Toyota Crown, owned mostly by your Dad's and Uncle's in the Middle East. They think it's the best car ever because it had "fancy" features that their Corolla's and Cressida's didn't have back then.
There's roughly 20,000+ government issued taxi in Hong Kong, they are all "Toyota Crown Comfort" model. In South East Asia, Toyota Crown brand is known as a cheap commercial cars. This luxury Crown is one of a kind.
I look at this car and think of what a Toyota Chaser met up with a Maybach from the early 2000s. I like it. Side note: The Gm 60 degree V6 and the GM 3300 pictured near the end of this film aren't related. The 3300 is a destroked 3.8. Have a great day everyone.
i had one of these as a rental last time i was in japan just a newer model and to be honest it was a very comfortable yet responcive car its very common to see these as police cars over in japan and with its size yet feeling like it drives like a small car i can see why its a very nice car would i own one if i had the chance i would say yes i can say the jdm collision avoidence setup works fairly well its also able to alert to earthquakes and so on rite in the infortainment system so live traffic, road conditions, weather and environment alerts is pretty ballen compared to the rest of this planet of ours
Nice, can't wait for Mr regular to go to Japan and review even more JDM cars that most others have never heard of or even seen, living in Jamaica I see the crown almost everywhere and everyday it's not very common but oh boy is it a beautiful car.
If you could find 80’s models to make a review you’ll be amazed how advanced they were back then especially the early years where they used to compete with Cadillac and Lincoln with luxury body on frame style.
Fun fact : the crash avoidance system Toyota used was adapted from Packard and designed in the 50s. They merged with Studebaker and cheaped out before offering it to the market
As a mainland Chinese,I would like to say that Toyota Crowns gave me the first lesson of what mid level,non-sporty luxury sedans should be like. When I was a kid,I had a chance to take a ride in my dad's friend's JZS133 Crown(one of the models of 9th Gen),I was just shockingly impressed. That was the first time I experienced supreme build quality and excellent NVH in a car. One decade after that,my dad bought a Lexus RX for himself, probably partly because of that Crown. And I simply don't like people call Crowns"Lexus without L badges",'cause in East Asian countries, the Crown name has more historical significance(Japan wasn't officially introduced the Lexus brand until '05;China began importing Crowns way back in the 60s,even before the PRC gov establishd diplomatic relations with Japan). Sadly, the 13th gen Crown suffered a lot of quality issues,14th gen Crown was too aggressive for mid-aged customers, and that segment of the market was robbed by Audi,BMW&Mercedes.
Not really tax laws, just the fact that we're not really close to anyone and our import laws and road legality laws are super lax. Japanese cars are just plentiful, fairly close and cheap, hence why that's what you mainly see
Not tax. We have no domestic auto industry or anything, and we have really lax import laws. All our cars are imported. So, we are able to import any car we want, from anywhere. all it has to do is pass a safety inspection, (Warrent of fitness) that checks stuff like if the tires have enough tread, brakes are good, lights all work, etc etc. Then you are free to register it and drive it. And this is any car you want. I could import a left hand drive, US car if I wanted, or any car from europe. Hell if I wanted, I could go to a showroom in another country, buy a brand new car, shove it on a ship and bring it here. So of course, we get ALL the JDM Goodies. Skylines as far as the eye can see.
There is no "import tariff" on used cars. There used to be in the 80's when some car brands were assembled here in NZ to protect that industry. When manufacturers pulled out, the import tariff was dropped and used cars flooded in from Japan, because they build Right Hand Drive cars. Japan also exports to other RHD countries such as South Africa and some lower African countries. But big RHD markets such as Australia and UK don't let them in. Although Australia's car industry just collapsed so that will probably change pretty soon. In Japan it becomes increasingly expensive to keep cars on the road once they start to age which destroys their value in the local marketplace, hence large numbers of vehicles exported for cheap.
Crown has a same platform with Lexus GS (S chassis). We have so many Crowns here as a government cars. For taxicab, we have a Mark X (latest generation from Corona Mark II) and of course a Camry too. You can't go wrong with Crown, its a Toyota's flagship sedan, its not comparable to Camry.
All Toyotas are Mercedes level cars, some are Rolls Royce level cars, but they sell for crack dealer money. All people can own a good car today unless they are nutty nostalgic like me and love an old smokey Diesel Golf II. Yes the hen house that refuse to die and you keep running against all logic. Please do a VW Golf II Diesel review. I promise that i will learn proper grammar if you do the Golf II D. Dankeschön.
And "crown" in Japanese is "kanmuri", which became "Camry" in 1982.

fair enough if they can't make it to Australia, it is a bit of a shame though

@Jack Z I know that hence why I said that
the Crown was sold in my country until the late 90's. It was sold along with the Cressida and the Corona (later renamed Avensis). The cool thing about the older Crown is the 1JZ engine. Lovely engine. It was even better in the Cressida, since it was smaller.
The old husky was even better to yiff, since it was smaller.
Showing off wealth is an American thing. This Crown is like a mash up of a Camry and a Lexus
Crown years ahead of time love these diamond of cars.
So this is pretty much the JDM version of a Lexus IS 350? The 2GR made good power for its time in my opinion. Always love seeing Toyota Reviews on this channel! Thanks.
JDM Ver. of Lexus GS(Though GSes are also sold in Japan)
well the 2grfse has more piwer than the 2grfe found in Highlanders and Aurions
I mean...
It's not exactly a JDM
It's also available in China and Hong Kong market
But I guess you can call it.
It's the Asian version of Lexus GS
Ah also, Mark-X is also available over here in Hong Kong
What is funny is that we even use the crown for Taxi (Crown Comfort)here.
Americans have been ignore this car long enough
If Toyota sold this car in the US...
Toyota4Life
Gosh I was hoping you wouldn't be here to ruin this channel. Thought I found the one channel you hadn't impeded on yet 😭
Dammit
Toyota4Life
Lmao hunny bunches of oats
Coming from the guy that has your name you really can't say such things
It's truly a travesty
I'll find a channel one day!
Toyota4Life
As you are kiddo :)
StillNotTellingYouMyName cool now stay off my comments 😉
There's like one guy that drifts Crowns at the highest levels and I've never seen one on a race track for anything besides a drift event. The Athlete isn't a serious performance car. You can't even get it with anything but a slushbox. It's about as much of a performance car as the Pontiac Bonneville GXP. I love em but you're way off base.
Love the Toyota digital clock displays ... especially from the 1980s with the hour and minute buttons
I'm so hyped for RCR New Zealand
Your narrative is the funniest out of all the car videos. It can stand on its own as comedy. Great stuff!
Automation is a GREAT game!
One of the coolest cars you have done to date, in my opinion. Man... Toyota was damn near 10 years ahead, give or take a few.
I thought it was a Lexus GS at first and second glance. Beautiful car tho
The Phaeton might be the ultimate stealth wealth vehicle, but, but this is the original stealth wealth vehicle.
The crown is to Lexus GS what the Tahoe is to the Cadillac escalade.
Boom. Analogy. Done.
@LEGIT.PLAYZZ Anything without a Lexus badge looks better than anything with a Lexus badge.
If not better, than at least ugly enough to trigger a reaction other than neutrality.
[lowblow]Like the Scion xB[/lowestofblows]
The GS was a Toyota Aristo.
Boom
@@AntJoseph_ I think for this generation the crown is very similiar to the gs. "midsized executive" class and both have the same v6
"The planet's bonus track"-the best comment about NZ I've ever heard. It can be taken as a compliment and a diss at the same time.
Crows are everywhere in Japan, they're all taxis
Mitchell Theobald crown comfort..
Not those ones you arse
I think its the first time in my life I've ever looked at a Toyota and it excited me.
looks like the bigger brother of Suzuki kizashi.
PLEASE also get your hands on the Toyota Mark X.
It's like the crown but more sporty and race oriented. It also comes manual ‼️
I'd like to see you Review a 2006 Nissan Fuga 450GT! They're really popular here in Auckland!
As a canadian child in the 80's, my father had a '63 Crown. If my memory serves me right, it was just two chrome bumpers, two hard bench seats, a terrible broken plastic steering wheel, and a smell of overheating coolant. I miss that car. Also, no seat belts in that beast.
The Crown looks like the missing link between a Camry and a Corolla evolved to ~near Avalon size.
The reviews done by you guys are my favorite to watch because you say all the things that the voice in a average person ties to suppress and that is why this is the only review channel i watch with full intent to first learn and second have a good laugh
The front is basically a Suzuki Kizashi
I really miss suzuki too. We could really use another Samurai or Kizashi. They made great cars. And still do overseas.
That's all I could think seeing that grille and headlights combo
But better looking
Wait the "new" Jimny isn't available in the US?
Takafumi Arisawa suzuki in america went bankrupt
Nice to see Regular on the right side of the road.
This is my dream car
When I used to hang out on AustNet IRC 10 years ago, I was given a super early version of the game Automation. It only contained basic engine modification and a few features but I can confirm it's fantastic. Do support.
Want to design an engine with all the fiddly bits? Piston stroke, bore size, cam profile, exhaust, etc, etc, etc? This is the game you want.
Did you just show a GM 3300 talking about the 60-degree V6 family? That's a 90-degree V6 in the same family as the 3800/3.8.
E-werd its an easy mistake to make
The engines become stupid reliable once fixed with a metal gasket.)
And I only know this because I have a car with an LA1. I can only imagine it makes things more fun for shop mechanics if make year and model aren't somehow mentioned.
The crown is a symbol of wealth in this part of the world.
The prodigal sons return.
Whoa! IT'S AN ACTUAL CAR REVIEW. Not just them in a room. Back to the good stuff.
You and PJ in a room, that's what i call "the good stuff" !
That's a really beautiful car
It’s a good looking car! And fuck that place is amazing!
Hip flask? Looked more like a trashcan to me.
Sneatz. Oooooooh!
I thought cologne bottle
Sneatz. It’s good car
i had one of these as a rental last time i was in japan just a newer model and to be honest it was a very comfortable yet responcive car its very common to see these as police cars over in japan and with its size yet feeling like it drives like a small car i can see why its a very nice car would i own one if i had the chance i would say yes i can say the jdm collision avoidence setup works fairly well its also able to alert to earthquakes and so on rite in the infortainment system so live traffic, road conditions, weather and environment alerts is pretty ballen compared to the rest of this planet of ours
I love these cars so damn much
Nice, can't wait for Mr regular to go to Japan and review even more JDM cars that most others have never heard of or even seen, living in Jamaica I see the crown almost everywhere and everyday it's not very common but oh boy is it a beautiful car.
the GM 3300 isnt a 60 degree. its a 90 degree buick 6.
RCR is back and better than ever! I missed seeing you on Mondays so goddamn much... but it was worth the wait!
Welcome to the real world, now you most likely know why everyone hates when Americans complain about gas prices
If you could find 80’s models to make a review you’ll be amazed how advanced they were back then especially the early years where they used to compete with Cadillac and Lincoln with luxury body on frame style.
Aww yissssss new RCR
It's so nice having Mr. Regular back and posting
Re: petrol prices - welcome to a country that's not the US. ;)
Fun fact : the crash avoidance system Toyota used was adapted from Packard and designed in the 50s. They merged with Studebaker and cheaped out before offering it to the market
Toyota BROOOOOWN
Man Japan gets ALL the good shit
I want that start up tone for my computer.
Any kiwis here who can explain what is the tax that makes this import so popular over there?
In Japan it becomes increasingly expensive to keep cars on the road once they start to age which destroys their value in the local marketplace, hence large numbers of vehicles exported for cheap.
i know sedans sales are waning, but I’ll take a low center of gravity and a string V-6. That’s a winning combo. I love this car.
NZ is soo beautiful. Wish to visit there
Crown has a same platform with Lexus GS (S chassis). We have so many Crowns here as a government cars. For taxicab, we have a Mark X (latest generation from Corona Mark II) and of course a Camry too. You can't go wrong with Crown, its a Toyota's flagship sedan, its not comparable to Camry.

Glad to have you back. Excited for the NZ episodes.
it reminds me of a g35 sedan
Ya Boi was also thinking this
This car is hilarious lmaoo that windows xp sound, its so luxurious i'd never be caught dead in it
All Toyotas are Mercedes level cars, some are Rolls Royce level cars, but they sell for crack dealer money.
Dankeschön.
The only Toyota car that I would ever consider buying.
Yessss finally
I missed you guys. Great that you are back.
