  • Deep down inside all of us, none of us want to be "in trouble". People with mental/cognitive challenges like autism will feel such primal feelings at a more intense level.
Using a soft, calm voice while saying "You are not in trouble" can be a very effective way to de-escalate a situation.

Many people don’t realize that autism OCD and bipolar, maybe more are considered mental illnesses. A friend who has a grandchild with Asperger’s said that it is a form of autism. Research came out of Korea recently about the discovery of a missing protein - that’s connected to mental illness. I know many people with bipolar so this is a important topic for me. Including the escalation thing. I was a foster parent and had kids for a mentally ill, which is common because they’ve been in the system for years and years and years being shuffled from home to home to home.most kids were in two homes a year. So they have severe mental problems. I could’ve used this deescalation technique with them.

Sometimes it's the little things that will work to de-escalate a situation, or fix something (like simply unplugging and replugging a computer!!!) But in the moment we may not consider such a "simple" option.
