You definitely captured what the overnight train experience is like. I would do it over and over again if I could. Waking up to the beautiful misty scenery of Sapa was just awesome. Just as awesome as any train experience I remember from Switzerland.

I visited Sapa a month ago and I have to admit that Sapa did change a lot. As a Vietnamese myself, I don't like the Sapa town at all, it's way too expensive, noisy, crowded and dusty. But you should still hang around there in day time. I would highly recommend people to spend your night in Ta Van. There are lots of homestay with cheaper price but I'm sure everyone will like this place as it's not only beautiful but also peaceful. I stayed at a homestay named Hmong house and fell in love with the beautiful view there. If you have great budget, Topas ecolodge would be a great choice as well. I hope my experience and opinion will be helpful for people who's planning on visiting Sapa

I took the overnight train between Hanoi and Danang (SE1) and found it to be very much like the one you were on. I was cool with sharing the soft sleeper but my husband, not so much. LOL The train trip was amazing and the food they sold on the train was simple but tasted fantastic! The only bad thing was the washroom... about halfway into the trip, it started getting almost unusable for a woman and the smell... well, that was an experience LOL BUT... I'd do it again in a heartbeat! I'm convinced that traveling by train is the only way to go in Vietnam, although we also did the overnight bus to Saigon (that wasn't so much fun).
