    Recently purchased a Kia Niro. So far we have 150 miles averaging 51 MPG. Not bad! Lots of cargo space, good looks, great gas mileage.

    i've had my LX for about a month now and driving from Thousand Oaks to Burbank( a mix of highway and local with traffic) i'm getting about 50mpg over four fill-ups so far. lowest is 49, highest is 52. ride is pleasant, there is some sensitivity to cross-winds.

      I moved to LA from a small city w a gas hungry sports car. I have no idea after paying so much for gas why any local non-rich person not buy a efficent hybrid

      Thanks for this post. I live in the West San Fernando Valley and will be commuting to Norwalk daily, im wondering how your Kia Niro is doing 3 years after this post. Also if I may, how tall are you? Im 5'11 and wondering if its ok for my height and a few extra lbs. Im really considering one.

    I have the touring and I average about 39MPG and I've been getting about 480 to 490 miles to the tank here in the NOVA area. It's been a little cold here so I think that could be affecting the MPG. The engine starts over the battery when it's cold and when the car is warmed up the EV mode kicks in. When it's warmer, the EV mode automatically kicks in. I'll take it over the 300 miles to the tank I was getting with my 2009 Ford Escape Limited. I LOVE this hybrid!

      mogelijk1 so in Canada at -20--30 that's 10 mpg lower? seems about right. went from 35 mpg to 25

      There"s a video on you tube of a man in the NE shows how to keep the engine/motor warm, during the cold days/nights in that part of the country doing a DIY of covering part of the front grill. It keeps cold air out. Less cold air the better the millage.

    Recently bought the LX trim, best car I have invested in by far. I have averaged 49 mpg thus far with 1500 miles on it. Our household now has a Nissan Leaf and a Niro and I must say, our pockets are INSANELY happy.

    Everyone reviews the nicer looking, but pricey lower mpg Touring version. I'm interested in the 52mpg "FE" version and I would think many others who are looking to buy a hybrid would be too.

    • @TheGerm24
      @TheGerm24 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think they review the version given to them by Kia. I think I saw a Consumer Reports quick review yesterday that used a lower trim. Try searching for that.

      Thanks. Yeah I saw the CR one, but Im trying to get a wider consensus from multiple reviewers.

    • @AlmirOsmanovic
      @AlmirOsmanovic 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      from what I understand the FE... the only difference is the tires, that's why the fuel efficiency difference. No real diff in weight or engine (other than the available options of course)

    • @Phrancis5
      @Phrancis5 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah smaller cheaper looking rims and skinny low rolling resistance tire - also no roof rails and lighter because less luxury powered stuff. The FE was supposedly quicker to 60 because of the weight but I'm concerned with the handling with those tires, since I live in a rainy place. I'm probably goin for the new Impreza Sport hatch, but 52mpg is hard to ignore for the same general size and price.

    • @Phrancis5
      @Phrancis5 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      ugh - that's what I would be afraid of. Do you have a link to that review?

    I bough the top trim, which is called Business Luxury in our country and the quality is pretty damn amazing. The technology stuff into the car is just impressive. Noticed today while backing up that if you press any of the mirror buttons then both mirrors will tilt fully down to further aid the parking. Awesome!

    • @dougn2350
      @dougn2350 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maeguk ... what's your fuel economy?

    • @maeguk1
      @maeguk1 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      D N .... in autumn time when the temperature was still around 10 Celsius in town I usually got 5.1 liters.
      Did a 500 km trip when visiting relatives in December, when temperature was around 2-3°C got 4,1. These are all calculated figures. Of course this requires that your foot is not rock heavy. There is no engine brake in the traditional sense, when you release the gas pedal the car will roll for a massive distance while recharging the batteries. If you read the traffic well then this saves you a significant amount of fuel.

  • @carfanfan
    @carfanfan 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Its still a nice car. I like Kia's styling and upmarket feel. Even been looking at one for the shortlist of SUV's for my next car.

    • @carfanfan
      @carfanfan 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Currently, Range Rover Evoque, Kia Sportage, Audi Q2, Jeep Renegade. That's the shortlist. The Hyundai didn't make it due to several factors, where the Kia shines - mainly looks.

    • @AlmirOsmanovic
      @AlmirOsmanovic 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We were looking at almost the same as yours (left RR & Jeep off the list because of reliability). Hyundai didn't make it because of interior feel, Audi for the price.. We are currently 3 months into a 2017 Sorento ownership. For 38k we got all the options that a 60K+ Audi had...so KIA was our go to, and will probably be again later this year when our VW Rabbit gets replaced.

    • @carfanfan
      @carfanfan 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Almir Osmanović I tend to agree with you. After doing more research this week, just about everything on the premium cars is optional. I'm surprised they come standard with a steering wheel. Now the shortlist is Evoque (cos it doesn't have that terrible air suspension that keeps failing), Mazda CX3, Kia Sportage (Sorento is beautiful, but too big for me) and Kia Soul (I like that new 201 bph one) and both Kia's are fully loaded. You made good choice with your Sorento.

    • @AlmirOsmanovic
      @AlmirOsmanovic 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      We were leaning towards the Sportage SXT, but once we figured out that we'll need a family crossover, we went up to the Sorento. Fully loaded for 31k... you can't go wrong..

    You get a lot more responsiveness from the torque if you put it in sport mode. The standard Eco mode is designed to ease in for efficiency, while the Sport mode is programmed to jump that high torque electric motor right in.

    I own a 2016 Prius Two. I get about 61.5 mpg average commuting 80 miles a day on I-5 in stop & go traffic and 80mph sprints in the PNW. We have lots of hills here and cold/rainy weather. I expected better fuel economy from the Hyundai/kia "Prius killer". The Niro definitely looks better that's for sure. I do like my Prius interior better though.

    • @ravenjames3873
      @ravenjames3873 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ivan Vojt: i don't know what it is about Hyundai and Kia. first it was Hyundai, now it's Kia that's off about there mpg number. that being said, 36 mpg for the fully loaded version of the Niro is still better than any crossover with a naturally aspirated engine. plus if you wanted to get close to 30 mpg with a rav4 or crv you have to buy a lower trim level, like the SE in the RAV4 or the LX in the CRV. not only that but it has to be the front wheel version, but most families buy the AWD version for a better ride and better traction. so basically if you skip the loaded version of the Niro and step down to the LX you could get close to 40 mpg. i had a feeling that when Kia advertised the car, i knew it was gonna be off of the 45mpg number. it's interesting that my Volkswagon Jetta TDI gets close to 40 mpg and that's with a diesel engine, and i barely drive that car on the highway i mostly use it in the city, and in the city i get about 33 in the city. on the highway i can get up to 45 if im driving conservatively, but most of the time it's 43. in mixed driving i get 39 mpg combined.

  • @NoteAndroid
    @NoteAndroid 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Had both Prius and Prius V, and I'm looking forward for my 3rd hybrid. Niro maybe the next. But again, MPG is always on my mind, oh no not because the money saving. It's the technology that fascinates me on how much higher MPG can a regular consumer can get these days on a mass market offered vehicle. (Did somebody said Tesla~? No I can't afford that~! Tesla is not mass market "yet". I'm waiting for T3) ) My 2008 Prius=37-39ish MPH on a good day and 2013 Prius V 33-35ish MPG on a great day. Niro looks a bit smaller than Prius V (not the 5th package, it's the "Veee" for Versatile station wagon). But the good thing is Niro is a bit taller, and I can see further forward, which I like especially I live in one of the most aggressive and dangerous driving metro.

    • @ratukamina
      @ratukamina 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I too am in the market for a hybrid and really wanted something like the niro or the now discontinued Prius v. The only thing preventing me from getting the niro is the DST that transmission design is notorious for having issues especially in European cars and thats where toyota's eCVT is super reliable and efficient. I might have to wait for next gen Rav4 hybrid.

    • @nofurtherwest3474
      @nofurtherwest3474 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm looking around and want a Tesla, but even the M3, which just came out at the $35k range, is still very expensive, and I want either a hatchback or SUV for the cargo. The M3 with some basic mods (paint for ex) ends up close to $40k. The Kia Niro is $23k or so. So it's a big difference.

      Helvi Hautala nope (: Kia plant is in Georgia. I'm doing my 3rd internship there as an engineer. We make the Optima, Sorento, and the higher trim Santa Fe (5 passenger only). The Hyundai plant is in Alabama and they make the Sonata, Elantra, and lower trim Santa Fe's. More than likely, the Niro is built in South Korea. Hope that helps!

      Antwon Powell The Kia is in my price range. With the miles I do I would need parts that would come from the factory. Coming from a new plant might mean better quality. For example GM still uses the Lordstown plant, home of the Shovette and Vega. I also want to give work to US workers.

    Beautiful car... I have the 2015 Hybrid Kia Optima and I am also averaging the same mpg as you are. I was truley hoping to get what the sticker said as far as mpg goes considering I drive 132 miles round trip to and from work. Had the car for 1 year and 10 months and never had any issues, only worries on longevity of the hybrid battery. My cas is a lease so I'm still debating if I should get a new lease or just purchase what I am already leasing. 😞

    That mpg is disappointing, but maybe it's the combo of winter fuel and cold weather. Our local news had one for a week and they were exceeding the EPA numbers.

    Nice job, Dave. I have one too. Regarding the low mileage you show, it's one thing that intrigued me in this car. Everytime you fill the tank, the mileage is rset, to a low of almost 25 mpg, and then gradually goes up as you drive, si you might have been in that stage. I contacted the Kia dealer to find out how I could read my total mpg (i.e. since i purchased the car), irrespective of refills. that info is not available. I love this car, but there was another feature that was strange. in my previous cars, I would start the engine, and the music will by default pick up where I last left it, usually Meida music coming from my iPhone. In this Kia, the default is always Radio, which means that everytime I go into my car and start the engine, I have to bypass the Radio default and press the Media button, silly waste of time. I was thinking of maybe locking the Media button down with some tape, so as it becomes the default, but that would look nasty..

    man, I like everything about this vehicle EXCEPT I drive 70 miles daily, when it 'says' 50mpg, I need 50, 35 is not cool. Sadly, I think I'll have to stick with Prius, reliably 50-50+/mpg

      Dave enunciates his words. He was a television anchor years ago but has retired from that. Now he does these car reviews because he's still interested in keeping up on media trends and he makes a few bucks from YT.
      And he likes cars.
